I am about to buy (maybe) G2. I do not fly 3d, I am not looking to learn to fly with it.. I would like to use it to practice elements of my IMAC sequence flying.. Work on wind correction and the like.
Is this software of any value for this or will it just end up sitting on my hard drive with all the other stuff??

Dan, it should work great for your purposes. I had an older Realflight Deluxe and it helped me a lot with flying upside down, rudder inputs, etc. It was not sensitive enough for 3D moves, hovering, etc. The new G2 is much better in every way. This is a terriffic time to be ordering a simulator....:-)

With G2 you can download a recording of the 2002 Basic, Sportsman, and Unlimited aerobatic sequences. Check out the recordings list at: http://www.aero3d.net/Recordings/recordings.shtml
When you play back a plane doing these sequences you can select a "picture in picture" view of a transmitter showing the coordinated stick movements.
I am currently practicing the AMA Sportsman set using G2 and slowly getting better. Some G2 aircraft flight models are better than others and some are very good flying the pattern.
G2 is a good tool for our hobby.

Hi Gary, thanks for the tip. What does the process of downloading and then using it with realflight involve? Download it to your computer..... then what?? When you click on "choose airplane" at the Realflight airport, does the new plane you downloaded show up?
Thanks for any info!

Having used both FMS and the newest version of G2, I can say from my own experience that G2 offers much more entertainment and versatility than FMS. That said, do not underestimate the value of FMS. It is a freeware software so your only cost is for the interface cable to plug your R/C transmitter into your computer, and for those without time or inclination to make the interface cable for themselves, you can pick one up on ebay from a number of dealers, for about $20. FMS has a gazillion computer program writers out there on the internet and the variety of planes and helis, available...for free...is virtually endless. G2 offers add-on disks of planes, and helis, to keep your interest up, and at $30 each, it's a small additional price to pay after you have already forked over about $200 for the full G2 program. The value in G2 is that in addition to a lot of neat gimmicks, you have the ability to select your preference of flying conditions. Thats not an available option in FMS. It's great to be able to practice your take-offs and landings in a crosswind, and develop your skills, without risking your real R/C plane on those real windy days. I have found that the crosswind strength you select should be a lot less than you think you need. The G2 wind strengths seem to be much greater than the numbers would indicate. With less than ten MPH, the plane gets blown right off the runway before takeoff. Good for a laugh, but you probably wouldn't be trying to fly under those gale force conditions. To sum it up, G2 is a wonderful and entertaining tool, if you can afford it, otherwise FMS will do most of what you need, and does it very well. Most flyers are well pleased with either of these simulators.
Happy flying.

To Ernie Misner: I am testing a downloaded recording from the aero3d.net site, but can't get the file to unzip. I don't have time to do further research until probably next week, so stay tuned. I have an RC Auction to get ready for this weekend.

THANKS a bunch Gary. I will be watching.
Also, what does FMS stand for? Is there a website where I can take a peek at this? (already have my G2 though - and "need" a new video card now...)

Flyboy, I am still learning too. These guys are great though and should come through for you. Also. post the question to support at Great Planes, check their FAQ's at the Realflight website, and check the discussion board there too. Best of luck!

Must agree with everyone that's said good things about this program. New to the hobby, so I bought G2 Deluxe a couple of months before I bought my Alpha Trainer. Two lessons later, I soloed with 15-20mph winds, and have about another dozen flights under my belt since. It was an excellent investment considering it was only about 1/3 of the cost of my trainer and all the other field equipment.

From: Center of the Flyover States,
Better late than never. This is for those who want info on how to download and run recorded flights in G2.
But, so far I have been unsuccessful in recently downloading and running a G2 recording because I cannot get it unzipped. Something is wrong with my software as MS Media Player is popping up and getting in the way of the unzip procedure. But if you are able unzip win-files you should be able to run recordings by doing the following:
TO DOWNLOAD A RECORDING
Go to the website (www.Aero3d.net , http://zeus.rcwizard.com/fubar_hill/G2.htm or http://www.realflight.com/ find the listing for recordings and click on the recording that you want to download. You will be asked to save to disk and then the destination on your hard drive. The progression on your hard drive down to the appropriate destination should be……. C, Programs, Real Flight, Recordings. Click on Save to start the download. Wait for the download to end and click on OK.
Now you will need to unzip or extract the recording. To do this (I think) would be to call up Windows Explorer. Find the recording zipped file by following the same progression as above. Once there perform your procedure to unzip files. (My procedure does not work now). If this process leaves its own directory and the original zipped file you can delete these “extras” as long as an unzipped recording file remains in Real Flight’s “Recordings” directory.
TO VIEW A RECORDING
Open G2 and get it running.
At the top menu go to and click on:
Options ….then
Recordings……then
Check the box to show recordings for all airports …OK
Check the box for say “IMAC Sportsman”. Note the airport where recorded as you may want to go to that airport…….OK
Click on the “eye” to switch the view from your airplane to the recorded airplane.
To view the radio stick movements of the recorded airplane while its flying: click on
View……then
Gadget..then
Radio.
You can enlarge the radio by clicking on a corner, holding the click and dragging in or out.
Clicking on the gray bar above the radio and holding and dragging will move the radio to the best position.
Hope this helps. Now, does anyone have any idea on how I can defeat Windows MediaPlayer and unzip my downloaded recordings? As stated above, I can still run any previously downloaded recordings, but not any new ones.
