Hello all i have an older shuttle z and the gyro mounts down in the frame in front of the engine. The one thats in it now is an older futaba mechanical gyro.I bought a new gy 240 but in the directions it doesnt say exactly where u can put but the pic in the directions show it mounted 2 the tail boom of a heli.My ? is can i mount this where my old gyro is mounted down in the frame in front of the engine and will it work there.Im just wondering this because all the newer helis it seems like the gyros are mounted on the tail boom and im wondering if this newer style gyro will work mounted somewhere else. Thanks for any help

I cant see why it wouldn't work, I imagine there is a little more vibration right in front of the engine than on the rear of the frame but if the current location is the only place to put it I wouldn't hesitate to put it there.

They are generally mounted on the on the back of the frame, right where the tail boom connects. The Raptor 30/50 sure is. Some of the older helis had the gyr mounted at the nose and they worked fine there.

Ok,Ive always mounted them as far forward as possible, away from the mechanics and radio stuff. But Im old school, started out in 1990,stopped from 94 till just this year.I have a JR Venture cp30 that I bought half-assed assembled on Ebay, flies beautifully and the gyro is mounted at the top of the forward frame rail, just about 2 inches in front of main rotor. Its a JR 410t that I couldnt get to act right till I shut off the tail lock.
I also just finished a Century Bell 47g 50 and I put the Futaba 401 at the front of the servo tray.
Would it make any difference in performance to move either of these?

I've never found a difference in performance or gain no matter where I mounted the gyro.
The only difference I have found is HOW the gyro is mounted. Some (the Futaba gy series) have internal dampening and benefit from a sturdier mount, I use 2 layers of Scotch double sided out door mounting tape. You can pick up the heli by the gyro with this stuff and seems to hold up against fuel spray very well.
The CSM gyros are hard mounted in the case and need the spongy double sided tape that they come with to react properly. Soft mounting gy gyros has, in my experiance, caused problems.
Also keep extensions, if you need one, as short as possible.

Yep, makes no differences where it is mounted physically, the gyro will detect movement all the same. Some pilots seem to think that the gyro needs to be moved as close to center of rotation axis (The main spindle) as possible, which is nothing but a huge myth and a plethora of misinformation.
Of course, common sense would dictate to keep the gyro away from engines and other electronic devices as much as is possible on a helicopter.

Bank04, where do you fly? Just curious since we are so close to each other. I fly at the PCRC field, Plane Crazy Radio Control, in Winchester. Occasionally at the Electronic Flyers of VA field in Stephen's City.

These days I always mount mine under the canopy where it's a bit cleaner. To keep the sun off I put tape on the canopy. It's easier to find a spot as todays gyros are much smaller than mechanical ones but if it's difficult I fabricate a platform to sit it on.
