You *CAN* use an FM receiver in a heli; I know many who do and I used to use them while I was learning.
There are many benefits to PCM, but if this is more of an FM or no flying issue, an FM Rx will do the job.
As everything, PCM has its issues also (mainly signal blocking in unwanted situations)
The only reason I fly PCM is because of Fail Safe.

I used a fm reciever in my raptor for a year when I was starting out. I got about 3 radio hits, nothing bad but, but enough to scare a beginner.
It is not mandatory, but I upgraded and have not had any glitches.

PCM or FM is a most debated dicussion, so I will just give you what I prefer is PCM over FM....When you have a big investment in equipment you might want to look & research here on others opinions on the two..(Search Right Hand Bottom Corner)

I to am to the point to where I preffer PCM, but FM will work. I used an FM receiver in my first bird for well over a year. And still have a couple in my lower cost birds. I will eventually be going all PCM. But for now the FM's will do in the cheaper birds. But there is no way I would ever put an FM reciever in say my Vigor CS or my Fury. That being said I would say that if you can afford the PCM reciever, get it for sure. But if it is a FM or don't fly. Then just use the FM until you can afford to get the PCM receiver. Just alway keep frequency control in mind, no matter what you fly with.
