Default SM Large Hawk Aileron Question...

Hey All,

See below. As I unpack my SM Large Hawk, can't help but notice there are no slots cut out for aileron horns. Normal? BVM manual doesn't mention anything neither do any of the build threads. If this is an oversight by Skymaster, I am not terribly thrilled as it makes me wonder exactly where the slots need to be (to the millimeter...PLEASE HELP!!!) and:

***how far back from the Aileron's LE should the slots be, and also how deep?

***I assume they should be perpendicular to the aileron hinge line?

*** And should there be hardpoints in there under the skin???

***If there aren't any am I stuck cutting out the skin and dropping hardpoints in? Hate to cut into a new Aileron skin [:@]

For those of you who have built the model, can you please chime in and a measurement and tons of close-up photos would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks in advance!

Skymaster planes do not have horns preinstalled. The hardpoints are inline with servo arm and leading edge of the control surface.

If you are really nervous about where the hard points are, hold the wing up to a bright light and you will see the hard points through the skin of the aileron.

Hi Shaz

There may be no hard points installed but you might be lucky, if not pull the aileron down so you can get inside, drill a hole in the balsa where your horn is located and inject Hysol into the aileron, this gives a firm footing for the horn.

I did a build thread here:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_94...tm.htm#9401509

I also have all the build photos on my facebook page here:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...3151924&type=3

I hope this helps.

Cheers, Alex

Shaz,
The aileron horns are covered on page 20 of the BVM manual.
The first operation on page 20 addresses the servo used, the servo orientation in relation to the servo pocket, and the servo arm used.
The second operation addresses the aileron horn drill size for the clevis pin, and the horn slot location and alignment.
The third operation is devoted to the the overall length of the pushrod.

Hope this helps.

Guys, still wondering if anybody else received a SM Hawk 100 with the aileron slots already cut out for control horn installation?

Harley, I looked at page 20 (and all pertinent pages) of the BVM manual and the only photos show the horns already dropped into the slot and they are close-ups so it is not a very accurate representation of exactly where I should cut the slots for the control horns INTO the aileron.

In discussing the aileron horn, in the manual there is verbiage that "The aileron horn is installed in line with the servo output arm" and that I should "Locate the slot to orient the horn in alignment in both planes to match the flap hinge procedure."

But in reality 2 top down photos by somebody with maybe a ruler first on the X axis and then a ruler on the Y axis, allowing me to gauge where anothazer builder successfully positioned their slot would make all the difference. Sorry to be a pain guys but rather ask before I cut into the skin rather than after.

Dantley, Tony Quist, would either of you mind posting such photos of the underside of your wings with a top down view of your ailerons and horns?

Thanks again,

Shaz

The mounting blocks on SM are hit and miss. There's a 50% chance they will be where needed. Feel around and find out where the block is if it's there, then see if that will allow a proper angle to where the servo needs to go in the servo bay....if not, open up the leading edge of the aileron and put your own hard point in from the front of the aileron. The ideal linkage is 90* to the hinge line.

Lather, rinse, repeat for the other aileron and flaps.[X(]

hawks build thread : http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_94...%2Chawk/tm.htm

regarding the aileron.

-place your servo with the arm torwards the tip of the wing (so you hold more in the midle your aileron)
-place a tape from your arm crossing your hinge line at 90 degrees
-place your horn FLAT with horns hole on the hinge line and bottom on tapes edge.
-mark the tape and open slot wide as your horn.
-use hysol

...i like to make my own horns so they go deep enough to rest on the bottow of the aileron and be glued
