Tom,
I understand that Shrewin Williams Auto and House Paint are really 2 separate divisons of the company. I'd go to their website and locate a automotive divsion retail store near you. I wouldn't recommend applying house paint to a jet.

I've used the Sherwin Williams Dimension 2K single stage enamals. These are comparible to PPG's Omni but, I find they cover better than Omni. Totally satisfied with the results. There is a base coat/clear coat system in the Dimension line as well. The 2K single stage paints have a super high gloss. There is a matt additive available if you want to flatten them. Are you painting a high gloss finish or camo?

I believe the high end Sherwin Williams line is Ultra 7000. Haven't used it though.

Myself personally I think Sherwin Williams should really stick to house paint. I think their product sucks for adhesion, coverage and flow. However, if that is your only option then I guess you have to make due.
However, see if you have a Dupont dealer locally, if you do, see if they carry Matrix, I just switched my entire shop over to Matrix from Dupont, it's nearly identical to the PPG Deltron paints only half the price! Beautiful coverage, great flow, a killer clear and awesome color matches. I am so very happy with the system. In Canada we have had to switch to water borne a couple years ago, some of the low end paints (Omni, Nason etc) remained a VOC compliant solvent base, but they were lousy to spray, (Omni is ok once you're used to it) but this Matrix is a VOC compliant solvent base paint that is almost identical to the Deltron. I am very happy to be done spraying PPG now that I can no longer buy Deltron in Canada. The Envirobase was fine for solid color, but you cannot mask on it which in my shop makes it useless.

See if you can find the Matrix paint before you use SW.
Just my opinion.

Tom,
I painted both mine and your F-104s and my F-22 with SW basecoat/clear. It goes on just fine. Reduce the clear 300 percent and mist on the first coat then flow on the second/third coat. You can tape in 20 minutes.

My next camo job will be latex house paint. Home Depot can match any color and the fumes won't kill you.

Aloha,

Mike

Hi Mike,

What clear are you going to use? Are you using a flat clear? I will be painting a T-33 soon and have been looking at different paints, water based polyurathene (warbird colors), exterior latex, Testors enamels. I really like the Testors enamels but need to find a kerosine proof flat clear that can be sprayed over them.

Why enamel? go with testors Acrylics, water based. I've sprayed Omni Clear (heavy solids) with flatening.....works great. You do need to prep the surface for Acrylic paint so it sticks to it good. Need a good mechanical adhesion.

Jeremy I tried to find Matrix on Dupont's site, nothing came up but herbacide (?)

Are you are speaking of this stuff?:

I can't figure out where their dealers are, do you have a link (as a jobber) of where the Matrix jobbers in Los angeles or Ventura county california might be?

THanks,

Matt, That is Matrix...not anything to due with Dupont.

Matrix is a good mid to high end auto paint. Their chemists basicly copied PPG's formulas and
you can cross the two brands on most if not all lines. The only thing I still use in auto is PPG's
clear. For models their MS 42 is a cheaper and works well and many in auto work love it. Base
is an exact match to Deltron DBC

I will disagree on SW sticking to house paint. I've had no problems with it. If you can't find it
local you can get it from Summit racing under their label. The line is the bc/cc and its easy to
tell it by their part number. Wouldn't waste the money on Ultra for model work. If you can
get it locally its cheaper.

BTW I use Dupont as a mainline but its expensive and the above will work well for our models.

I should add that Matrix may be handled by the local jobber that also sell Dupont etc. The Matrix dealer down here also sells some SW. And there
is also the real SW auto paint jobber here as well..go figure.

Chuck can you mix DBC and deltron clear (activators, reducers, etc.) with Matrix and vice versa?

Also how can you find out who sells it? Matrix does not seem to have anything online that tells who their jobbers are.

Thanks

SW only sells the clear coat base coat through automotive paint dealers. I HAVE BEEN USING sw FOR OVER 20 YEARS.

Hi Matt,
Sorry, I think I was misinformed by the rep at the shop I get the Matrix from. They are a Dupont dealer and the way they talked about the Dupont and Matrix line they lead me to believe they were connected. QSC is who apparently owns the Matrix line.
The Matrix base coats are pretty much identical to the DBC paints, to the point that you can replace a DBC toner with a Matrix toner. I'm very happy with the Matrix so far. As for their clears, I don't think I'd try mixing activators and clears, reducers should be fine. The Autoglas clear from Matrix is beautiful, I've sprayed it a few times now and I'm really liking it so far. It flows nicer than most clears I've used in the past, in fact, I'm not sure I'd ever use it for a panel repair on a factory painted car as it flows out so well you would never match the factory orange peel with it, well, you could, but it'd be a shame to purposely make such a nice flowing clear spray out poorly.

In regards to SW paints, just because I don't like them doesn't mean others haven't had success with them. I know guys that think the PPG envirobase is awesome too, I can't stand it. I love the DBC but since I can't buy it in Canada anymore I was missing it. The Matrix is awesome and it's less money than DBC. My personal opinion on base coat paints is that the old RM Diamont (BASF) were the absolute nicest to spray and they had the best black of anyone. The old DC95 clear was the best clear I've ever sprayed as well. Unfortunately, they never supported Harley colors so color matching was a major pain. I've sprayed many brands of paint, the only ones I would personally not recommend as I couldn't stand working with them was the Sherwin Williams, and Sikkens. Doesn't mean they aren't good paints, I just don't like them is all.

Matt I do use the reducers....note that Matrix MR895 is closer to DT885 at least works that way down here in the heat. DBC is Deltron
and the Matrix match to it is MPB which includes all the colors and the Xyrillic pearls. I also like their epoxy, excellent adhesion and
easy sanding, compare that to DP. 2021 still the favorite of the Delton line though, but you won't be able to tell the difference on the
models.

Found one jobber in Burbank at http://www.stateautomotivepaintandsupplies.com/

Chuck

Call them and if they can't help you they can tell you the local jobber.
