Neck Strap or not?
#27
Thread Starter

It is looking good for the straps, some very interesting points of view.
A friend of mine does not fly strap, he has hay fever problems in the summer, on many occasions i have been handed the TX when he is Jet flying because his eyes were watering. I can fly without the strap, but every time i do i realize just how good one is!

I used to always fly with a neck strap untill 3 weeks ago, when i noticed my heli servos twitching when the neck strap clip would move on the atatchment on the radio ! I ordred a tray now, because i dont want RFI every time my strap moves on the radio ..

Paul,
So are you going to be changing to this new Futaba 12 channel supposed to be coming out around the middle of the year?

Hi Antony,
My tray uses the strap that you do not have to have hand support with the exception of being able to rest your fist on it.
I personally feel is the best one as my hands are free to use every control on my TX without having to worry about holding the TX.

I've been hearing about the 12 channel Futaba for over 2 years now, still waiting.......I think it's one of those urban myths.

It looks like the strap vs. no strap is about 2 to 1 in favor of the strap. I fly with thumb and index finger and just purchased a neck strap. I'm going to try it and see what all you strap guys are talking about. Anybody know how long it takes to get used to it?

I have been using a strap since BEFORE they were available!!...........Way back in 1977, I saw a photo of some European pattern fliers with straps and/or trays and my dad went out and got me a leather saxophone strap to try. We shortened it a bit and modified the attachment clip. I've been flying with a strap and using thumb and index finger ever since. I think that I was just about the only guy flying pylon with a strap though!!

No strap for me-thumb flyer. After reading this post I actually got the strap out of my 10x transmitter case and tried it here in the shop-felt really weird. I had never even thought of using a strap before- maybe I will give it a try on one of my prop jobs and see how it goes. You know what they say about old dogs and new tricks! I also fly mode 1 but that is never going to change. Happy New Year to you All.

Started using strap when flying slope x-country comps in the 70's, stopped using one when I had problems holding the tx above my head when trying to save a model. Also had real problems when a friend (using one) tried to pass me his tx when in trouble with a dead d/f, very very close.........

Since the late 1970's as a kid I've only hand held the transmitter but two years ago I began using the strap in the middle of the summer when it was really hot to keep myself from risking a transmitter drop with sweaty hands. I've never gone back to anything but the neck strap. I'd probably like to get a tray too, I might like that even better. I'm a thumb only pilot, I tried the index finger and thumb technique but was not patient enough to learn the skill, it appears it might be better for precision work though. I don't fly 3D, that is the only area I believe thumb only would be superior.

I too (like Eddie P) can see that, logically, the strap and even a tray combined with thumb & forefingers may be better: more precise. But when I learned to fly in the summer of 1976 in Baltimore, every one in the Radio Control Modelers of Baltimore Inc. flew thumbs only and I don't think anyone there had ever seen a strap. I tried a strap a few years ago but it felt too weird. I also tried to use the thumb & forefingers, too weird again.
Old dog, new trick syndrome, I guess.

I fly thumbs, with the stick length set to about 3 mm from the end of extension on a 9C
