After over a year of on and off work my TGA MIG 29 is ready to fly. This is the first DF I have built and I really don't fly as much I would like to. Is there anyone in Austin that is willing to give it the once over and maybe shake it down?
For all those who have had a TGA MIG, what was your finished weight? I haven't been able to weigh it yet but it seams heavy!

Thanks Sean. I'll see if I can take you up on your offer. Maybe we could meet at the North field? I live near the South field. Work is a killer right now but I need to fly the thing and be comfortable with it before the Jet Rally.
AAdbu- It's the cockpit TGA sells. No very inpressive for $80 IMO. The pilot had no right arm- had to make on out of epoxy/micro balloons. However, everyone who has seen it seams to be impressed??

Good looking jet. You will find that the flaps are not needed. This plane will fly as slow a you wanna go. I fly with the scale ailerons and roll response is excellent. I also have the scale ailerons and rudders on mine. I love your paint scheme. I think mine came out to about 12lbs. Didnt have to add any weight to balance once the correct cg was determined. Give yourself as much elevator throw as possible. Check some threads here on the Mig 29 to determine if you have the correct cg. You willenjoy this jet and it does get some attention since you dont see many Migs at the filed.

Is that a Weston pipe you're using? I'd like to know how the OS 91 does with it, please keep us posted. Great looking MIG!!
Good luck on the maiden!! I would certainly consider taking Sean up on his offer with a buddy hook up. The peace of mind will come in handy. Good lookin out Sean!

Loving your paint scheme! Im getting mine here in a couple of months then moving down to Kileen TX. Since there isnt much down there Im proably going to have to go up to Austin to fly. How far do you guys think think that south field is from Kileen anyway? I should be there by summers end. What kind of engine/fan combo did you go with?

Hank, Your Mig looks great .... and they fly like a dream. My first flight used the same setup you have with that small stubby Weston pipe. My engine quit after about 2 minutes because the pressure nipple blew off. My pipe had the nipple secured from the factory (I noticed what looked like epoxy around the base of the nipple). This may have been just a rare case of where the nipple blew off ...... but figured I'd let you know so you can check yours out. Bob

Bob, I'll check that when we do pre-flight, thanks for the heads up.
Hank, I'm back in Austin so just keep me posted, if you want to bring the mig over to my shop, email me at [email protected] and we can go over it and I'll show you some interesting jet projects I'm working.

Sean- I'll give you a call tonight.
Guys- Should I braze the nipple on? What temp does the pipe get to? I would think it would be below even silver solder.
B1Driver- It's a OS 91/Byron/Weston.

Hank,
You can't braze or silver solder to aluminum. Get some Alumiweld rods. I've seen something similar at Sears Hardware. They called them Aluminum Brazing Rods or something like that. Home Depot may also have them.
I used the Alumiweld to build up a boss on the pipe. Then I drilled and tapped the boss. It's lasted almost 100 flights so far. Here's a picture.

Hank,
Love the plane! Looks awesome. I may have to dig mine out and finish it. Two questions: what is the distance from the back of the canopy to the back of the hatch? Also, what are the dimensions of your scale control surfaces? Thanks, and good luck with the maiden!

I'll bring this back to the top and maybe Hank will jump on here Monday and get you those measurements. I had the honors of maidening this Jet on Saturday. Absolutely wonderful flying Jet. I have a lot of experiance changing CG's from Top Gun's recommendations. TG recommends 1 inch back off the main hatch, we went 1 inch and three quarters back. I believe this is the rock solid CG point for this airplane. Landing and roll out was around 50 feet or so.
First take off with the byron was uneventful but flat. Takes a long time for that new engine to get on step. Once I got it to altitude, got it all trimmed out, the jet flew beautifully. I had 30% expo on elev and ail, and I believe that is a very good setup for that airplane based on recommended throws.
On the second flight we were getting lean engine and the flight ended in deadstick. Brought it in right on the numbers, decided to come back on it another day, drank beer and ate shrimp. It's always fun to fly someone else's airplane, especially when it fly's as good as this one did!
Hank, thanks for letting me help you out, I had a great time.

Absolutely, positively, do something about the nipple on the weston pipe. Every one I had blew out, it's absolutely a deadstick.
The building up a boss and re-tapping is the best solution. Pitot pressure also is a good solution. JB weld worked for me...for a while.
Also, drill an extra set of holes and use a second spring. And run a safety wire through the spring and tie it. When the spring goes, it will otherwise go back into the fan, which is not good.
Best pipe around, but there are some silly flaws built in, that SHOULD be adressed by now, but were not on the last new pipe I saw.
