Default Dean Lassek A-10 - from the bottom

Hi all.

Last winter I purchased an old A-10 kit from a friend in Hamburg/Germany. I only got the fiberglass parts.
I contacted Dean and he was very kind to send me some formers and a set of drawings for the kit.
So---------- now I have cut the foam cores for the flying surfaces. I hope to finish the plane during the next winter.
I took some pics to share with you guys. Now I gotta figure out how to build this monster thing...[sm=bananahead.gif][sm=drowning.gif]

Thanks, Todd.

How many JR8611 do you think I need for this one?[&:]

By the way. Anyone know a good source for a complete set of gear for this monster. I assume it will weigh around 55 lbs wet..... The MIBO Jets gear would fit, but I think it is a little to expensive for my taste.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but does anyone have info on availability of the Dean Lassek A-10 Kit, or any specs on it?

Hello.

The Dean Lassek A-10 is no longer available. You have to go with the MIBOJETS if you want one the same size.
Go to www.jetadic.com or www.mibojets.com

BTW. I will start the build in a month or so, when I have finished my other (smaller) projects. I'm gathering parts at the moment. All I need is the thrust pipes and some epoxy glue.....

I'm pretty sure that kit was derived from the old Josh Harel plans. I was living in Colorado Springs when Dean built/ designed ( he made a fiberglass kit) the first one and flew it with 2 Dynamax fans with OS 91s. It was pretty impressive. I believe Dean still visits RCU and post here.

Thanks for the info guys, the Mibo kit is way out of my price range

I see what I can find out about the Josh Harel plans

Just for reference, I found this 80" version here: http://www.jensenjetmodels.com/id25.htm

Although they list a kit, they only offer a short kit with the fiberglass fuse, and other components, you have to buy the plans and build the wing, tail, etc. I think this is the old George Miller design.

Looks like no easy way to do it....

I'm surprised with all the jet manufacturers out there, no one offers an 80-90" kit/ARF

It's perfect for EDF conversion due to the high lift wing, and the fact that it doesn't need to be "fast"

Dean put me in touch w/ Josh a couple years ago and I purchased a set of A-10 plans from him. At that time Dean still had some glass parts available, not sure if he does or not anymore. He frequents this site often so I'm sure he'll jump in here. My plans are in the "to be built someday" bin.

Do you think the plans could be scaled down? I am thinking about an EDF A-10, I am finishing one now from Electric Jet Factory, but I would like a bigger one

I'm sure it could be scaled down. The build is traditional balsa / ply structure, just plan on killing a LOT of balsa trees during the process!
With the power of the new EDF's though, this would make an interesting conversion at current scale. Lot's of room in the nose for all the batteries you'd ever need, plus no issues with balance. I saw one fly "back in the day" with twin D/F's & it flew well.

I sent Dean Lassek and email about your inquiry. Below is his answer.

"Hi Sid,
I'm in London at the moment and can't remember my RCU password to reply. Would you reply and let them know I have Josh's plans available and can supply glass parts for my kit? I will respond to RCU when I return to the US.next week.
THX"

Dean will contact you when he returns.

Thanks Sid. I was looking for Dean's email address & couldn't find it. Glad to know he still has some glass parts available. Maybe this winter will be the start of a BIG project.....

Thanks Sid for contacting him....I scrounged the internet and found some pics of the fiberglass fuse he used to sell. Also found some recent posts where he wasn't doing that part anymore. I am very interested in doing an EDF version, and keeping it the same size !! I do believe it is possible. I would imagine this plane comes out very, very tail heavy with the turbine setup, which would mean lots of dead weight in the nose, which can be avoided by moving the batteries as you suggested. I am concerned about scratch building the fuse. I don't mind the wings and tails...maybe, maybe we can talk Dean into making the fuse if he still has the molds, if I/we can make it worth his time. I found the retracts for it- made by Robart, a bit pricey at $600+... I bet a set of big 1/4 scale retracts would work just as well, and can be made to look scale. For the time being I'll keep plugging away at my smaller A-10 from Electric Jet Factory. It has retracts and i will be detailing it out pretty soon, just have to get the retracts plumbed and electronics sorted yet. Here are some pics for now

I have the Robart A-10 gear for mine. Wheels are from Airtech in Germany (Same set as for the Skygate Hawk)

Just a bump ......

I found some old posts from Dean back when he offered the full kit for $1500.

Also found where someone was actually running cut-down 3-bladed graupner props instead of an actual fan impeller. He was running fan specific engines for the RPM's I suppose. Flight reports were favorable.

I am still interested in doing this one electric !!

Does anyone happen to know the inside and outside diameters of the engine nacelles on the Lassek/Harel plans?

I have many large (prop) electrics up to 1.20 size @ 16 lbs. So I do have the experience to make this happen ( I think !! )

Meanwhile the "baby" A-10 is moving right along. Painting and detailing scheduled for this weekend. Just got to find something to keep the girlfriend busy

I'll dig my plans out this weekend when I get a chance & measure the nacells for you. Josh Harel used to sell his own "fan" which was a 3 blade prop (If memory servers me correctly) mated to a .61 or larger engine.

Thanks Bob, I appreciate it...... If I can work out the electric setup it will make more sense to move forward with the (eventual) build.

Looks great. Do you plan to put hardpoints under the wings?
Remember, the bigger they are the better they fly.

I thought about the hard points, but being that the wing is built up open structure, in the event of a retract failure/belly landing, it would really tear up the wing. If I build the larger one it will have all the scale features.

Tomas you found me !!!

My plan would be to build the basic airframe with retracts and servos, so I can get an idea of the weight, then figuring the max. diameter of the nacelles and work backwards from there. I may think outside the box on this one...maybe a true EDF is not the way to go with this one being electric...The big EDF's are amp hungry (short flight times) , expensive, and designed for fast jets and top speed..I would want more of a thrust setup, so possibly a shrouded prop setup, like a cut down 3-blade prop on 10S lipos in the 2000+ watt range, maybe a couple Neu motors, maybe some big Hyperion outrunners, not sure....I would need to get the nacelles first and do some experimenting on the bench. I don't need this plane fly @ 150 mph, it will cost too much in AMP draw I think. 80 mph would be scale speed and make me happy. Definitely going to go with the largest diameter fan/prop I can fit inside the nacelle.
