Where to fly in Southern CA?

Where to fly in Southern CA?
I have 2 motives first one being where to fly? I'll be working in the Northern San Diego Cty. area around Carlsbad, but I may potentially live north of there in Southern Orange County. Any suggestions?
Also I'm kind of looking for suggestions on areas to live as well. My better half will be working in the Burbank and Hollywood areas most of the time, while like I said I'm based out of the Carlsbad area. Preferably I'd like to have as easy of a drive as possible for both work and play. I don't mind going long distances, as long as I can actually travel at a decent Highway speed.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, travelling at a decent speed may be a problem. Depends on where or when.
Sounds like the best bet for the two of you would be somewhere in the OC (Orange County) like Irvine-ish near the 5/405 interchange or the Beach Cities area (San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano).
That would put you about 1/2 hr north of Carlsbad/Oceanside, and her between 45 minutes to 2 hrs. from her work[

As far as Jet flying fields...the Sepulveda Basin's Apollo field in Van Nuys (very near Burbank) is about the most southern of the Socal Jet fields left [:@] (other than Camp Pendleton, if your military, and a fire ban is not in effect). Slim pickins' to say the least.

Great info, thanks. That is the area I've been thinking. I know that it is farther for her to drive then me, but she will be technically free lance and could write off the mileage where as I could not for my trips to the office. [&o]
That's also a bummer about the jet fields. I knew it was slim, but did not realize it was that slim. Maybe I'll build one of the JHH EDF F4Ds.

Mark you are in a bit of a tight spot with your wifes job and your location. At any other time than 0300 (and even then you will run into CalTrans shutdowns and work) It will take every bit of two hours for your wife to get from the Jan Juan Capo area to Burbank. It takes me 1 1/2 and I live 40 miles north of SJC. On a bad traffic day it might take her 3-4 hrs. That does not make for a happy wifey on return home. The Temecula valley flyers have a nice field in Temecula. The runway is only about 450 feet so the heavy iron is not really an option there, but sport jets are fine. Good luck, Scott

agggh you got to miss it. i should update my home base since i have transplanted to sin city. the other day the vegas paper had an article regarding the dropping of "Americas finest city". looking out my window not a cloud in the sky, winds calm and dry lakebeds abound. i still miss the water. say is your son still playing golf?

Ditto what GSR said. Traffic is a complete biatch here in SoCal. The commute you are talking about is brutal. I drove from Orange County to Burbank the other day for a couple of meetings. Average speed 8 mph. at 9:30 am
Anything between a 2 to 4 hour drive in each direction is the sad truth for both of you with those work locations.
Going to the Basin to fly jets on a Sunday will be anything from 1 to 2 hours each way. I-405 and 101 are nothing but big 10 lane parking lots.
Sorry to make it sound grim. I moved here 1 1/2 ago from Florida and absolutely love it. Except for the part when I have to get in the car and go somewhere further than 10 miles away.

Hmmmm...tough position indeed. As terrible as the traffic may be, I think we might have to bear it for a while. I know that going north from OC will be bad, but is it really that bad going south to the SD area...especially Carlsbad and Encinitas? Also ironicially probably half the work my company does is based in OC. Originally they were going to move the company up there, but getting everyones homes sold and moved and stuff at once was going to be a crazy mess. So if I'm lucky I might only be in the office 2-3 days a week. So I guess everyday is a crap shoot then? My friend is working on the new Meat Loaf record in the Santa Monica area and he said the engineer he is working with made it from San Diego to Santa Monica in an hour and a half, but I don't think he left SD until around 10 or 11 am. I guess I'll play it by ear. As far as flying jets a lot goes, I'm more interested in building them then flying anyway....but flying every now and then would be good fun too.

Moved to LV huh. Nice weather over there, but too hot in the summer. I love living where no AC or Heat is required. I have a room AC in my office that I used 3 days this summer. The price of paradise is nasty though!
Speedjunkie, that is "anytime" as long as there haven't been any rainy spells, as the lakebeds are off limits when soggy, correct? Nice wide open spaces though. Make sure your inlets are not too far behind the nosewheel though, or you'll be ingesting a lot of dust.

In reference to Rabbit dry lake. I landed my Piper Arrow out there many years ago during a BIRD club yearly outing. It was real nice. Whats the surface like now? Is there a time of the year when it's not so good? Any problems with dust in the turbines? That looks like a good place for test flying also.

Hi Austin, It is really surprising how little dust there is. The bed is a hard clay that kicks up suprisingly little particulate matter. My planes get far dirtier sitting in the pits when I am with you guys at the 1/8th fly ins. It is a great place to test fly-only problem is there is no runway edge or CL so you get lazy and sloppy

I should clarify that I don't have to get on the high ways to get to work, but even when I do take the 5 to work, I'm going the opposite of the flow most of the time. Also in CF everyone drives like a bat out of hell all of the time, here it is not so bad. Anyway, I've driven to Apollo a couple of times now. I guess once I get back from some of my trips from work I'll have to join up.
