Well, here is the stopping point for tonight. Going to get some rest and jump back on it tomorrow morning. I still have some machining to do and then it is on to the laser cut motor mount and electronics. Until then!!!!

Just Wondering........Why all the complicated work reinventing the wheel? Why not use an air cylinder????? More closely duplicates the full scale..................

Kudos to you Chris!
Years ago, I had to good fortune to talk with and look at a MASTER builder's creations. The fellow's name was Mr. Tom Robertson, one of country's best scale modeler. This guy was so good, he was contracted by other well known scale modelers to build models for them. I kid you not.
He had built an absolutely stunning example of an F86 that featured an operational canopy. The sound and movement of its operation was a joy to watch. He also used a method similar to what you are doing.
Never mind some of the peanut gallery comments....99 % of us look forward to seeing you continue to have fun designing, creating and tinkering!

Gettting closer! The idler/tensioner is done, my buddy and I ran it through just holding the motor in place and I have to say that this thins is one bad ****!!!!!! I am off to get the motor mount designed and mounted so I can press on with electronics and blow in doors!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I must say that I admire the level of your craftsmanship. I do however have a question regarding the canopy slide that I will try to explain. Since the former that supports the lead screw is rigidly mounted, and the canopy raises and lowers as it slides along the track, is there not a binding moment there? I quess what I am trying to say, is since the lead screw and the canopy slide do not run parallel through the complete opening and closing of the canopy, is there not a slight flexing moment in the system.
I understand that the barrel that the lead screw runs through will rotate and maintain relation to the lead screw as it tracks along the slide (I think), but still I can't picture the geomentry change as the canopy goes between the high & low points in relation to the rigid mounted lead screw. I may be missing something somewhere, but I have looked at this pic time & time again and the same question keeps arising.

Countryboy, The leadscrew and drive mechanism are securley mounted but the tracks and frames were designed to allow slight flexing if needed for everything to operate smoothly. The system was ran through about ten times with me just holding the motor at the proper belt tension and it worked flawlessy. There is enough room for the cockpit and yes there will be a kick***** one in this bird!!! Stay tuned, this is only the begining of what is goint to be an awesome bird!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Time to grab a cold one and go back to work!!!!

I can tell you folks from the experience of working with and learning from Chris, that this plane is going to be AWESOME. I saw a Eurofighter that he did a few years ago. He ordered a cockpit kit and still put in more than 200 hours just to make it stand out that much more. I knew nothing about planes when he showed me that cockpit, but I could see then, that he was a stickler for perfection and the details. I can't wait to see this when it's done Chris.

Here it is with the motor mounted! I am so glad to see it working, there were a lot of sleepless nights trying to figure it all out. Once my buddy gets back from his vacation, we will wire up the switches and be done with it. I have a couple of other small things to tidy up but that won't take long. Well, I guess it is on to the functional blow in doors now!!!

With the canopy working great with just a battery, I pulled the drive mechanism apart to install support beams and start glueing things in permanent. I will post some pics of the finished product and throw a video up so all of you can see it work. So with that being done for the most part, it is time to bite the bullet and move onto the the blow in doors. Here are all the parts and a picture of what it is supposed to look like on the airplane. Here goes nothin!!!!!!

The blow in doors are coming along quite nicely, I spent some time to think how I was going to do it and finally got back in the saddle today to get them working. I trued up the molded door that was with the kit and the cut a frame from 1/32ply laminated with .010 G10 glass. I made the frame oversise so I could clean up the exagerated radiuses that existed in the door frame with filler. I mounted the door to the frame and heat formed it as close as I could and then put a thin layer of putty that will be sanded down so the door will fit the contour of the fuselage. I kept the door as light as possible so the door will suck open during idle and taxi. I just need to knock out the other side and then start cutting holes in the fuse to accomodate the assemblies. Once these puppies are done I think I will be able to give my brain a rest and start laying stuff out!!!!!!!!! Enjoy!

I finally made it to the shop today to do some work! I finished building the right blow in door and was going to call it quits for the night but I started tinkering around and managed to get the right door fitted to the fuse. It all went a little better than I had originally planned. I still have to do the internal part of the door before I secure it permanently to the fuselage. As you can sse in the last two pictuires, the door works great just shooting some canned compressed air for cleaning computers down the inlet and it sucks right open. It was opening further when I started playing with it but the can started getting cold and did not push as much air down the inlet. When the air stops, the door closes, I am VERY happy with the way these puppies turned out!!!

Here is the right side complete minus some blending. Shown is the full open position. Off to get some grub and on to the other side!
