RE: Composite ARF Tucano Build
Thanks for the reply. I am looking for the 24X12 Biela Turbo-prop prop. Troy built models only sells the standard model.
The one I am looking for has turbo prop wrote on them. I think they are for higher RPM's

I've seen it both ways. I have seen prop strikes that did not bother the gearbox and seen some that damaged it. I have seen the same thing with Jet Central. I have seen 3W and DA gas motors twist/bend cranks from prop strikes and other times come out just fine. There are a ton of variables that will steer the outcome. The nice thing (I suppose...) is that the prop instantly shatters, releasing the load off of the gearbox so the possibility of damage is reduced.
Since the gearbox is not directly connected to the turbine, it is not affected during a prop strike...on either unit. I hope this helps...

Got a question... What happens to the JetCat engine/gearbox if you get a prop strike, i.e. the nose gear retracts? Does the gearbox trash out and need rebuilding or does it just tear up the prop?

RE: Composite ARF Tucano Build
In the event of a propstrike always send the motor in for inspection, that is written in bold letters in the Tucano manual.
My Tucano suffered a propstrike before I bought it, I sent the engine to Jetcat stating that it had had a propstrike, with the engine shutdown just before the landing (landinggear would not lock). The engine looked OK but we decided not to run it again. The Mejzlik prop was not even damaged from the grass-landing.
A few weeks later the engine came back from the factory with a brand new gearbox and turbine casing installed, with an invoice that said "repair free of charge due to honesty".
Regards, Bart.

Yesterday I managed to sneak a few hours at our local grass strip to help Luke's with his Tucano. I only managed on flight last weekend, so this allowed more setting up. Think its still a bit tail light, so Luke will move things around. Set up the Powerbox smoke system...wow most smoke ever!!
The model has a very old SPT-5, yet power is really good.
Luke has now done some take-offs and flights and one his confidence is up he will be landing this sweet flying pattern ship...with huge flaps!

Thanks,
Jan

RE: Composite ARF Tucano Build
Dave... do you have the smoke oil injected straight into the exhaust, or some tube coiled in the there to pre-heat it. I've heard this really helps, but perhaps when using the good DA smoke oil it is not needed?
Cheers,
Colin

Its a single JetCat smoke nozzle reshaped and inserted through one exhaust tube, the steel was worked around the tube to grab it and Hysol placed around it. The smoke pump is a Powerbox item, now set at 35% flow (60% originally set covered the aeroplane in oil) oil is DA smoke oil.

RE: Composite ARF Tucano Build
Hi,
Glad you like the cockpit... on a plane where the cockpit is such a prominent part, IMHO it would be criminal to not do it full justice. The dashboards and side instrument decks were done by Wolfgang Noll in Germany:

Mobil: 0170 / 8859010
</small>
The pilots were done with brazillian airforce insignia, and done by Maff's Cav:

None of the bought in bits were cheap, but then, the Tucano is not a cheap model and I didnt feel the cockpit was the place to scimp. Jan (sprinbokflyer on this forum) used exactly the same suppliers for his cockpit, in fact I followed his lead on this.
Any further info or photos I'm happy to help... just ask!

The control columns I made myself from balsa, and all of the rest was the standard CARF ABS bits heavily filled and airbrushed. The CARF supplied "pilots" (which looked like alien spacemen to me) went straight in the bin.None of the bought in bits were cheap, but then, the Tucano is not a cheap model and I didnt feel the cockpit was the place to scimp. RE: Composite ARF Tucano Build
Thanks Shane... it is an amazingly plane to fly. I had Jan do the maiden on mine, as he had already flown his quite a bit. Alas, I didn't get much of a fly myself that day as I had a problem with one of the main gears (retract block binding, and one of the gear bay doors coming loose). That's all fixed now, and I'll be getting it back up in the air sometime in the next week.

Hi Shane,
Had mine out again today, what an awesome plane to fly! Colin's is really nice with the scheme he's got, quite easy to see too for a camo.
Cheers,
Jan
