Default Jet hovering 2 inches off the Ground

Here is my buddy Ralf Losemann's own built J-10 with Vector thrust at Joe Nall 2008... check it out - this guy is un real !

Ralf was invited to Joe Nall by Mr. Emmerich Deutsch, so many thanks to Emmerich for bringing Ralf to Joe Nall.

I bought my HPP subscription (www.higherplaneproductions.com) just to watch the videos from Joe Nall and see Ralf perform and it is absolutely breath taking - i could only hope to fly this good with my own VT jet some day !

On the last photo you can see the PowerBox Systems team at Joe Nall 2008:
Ralph Losemann, Gerhard Stejskal, Enrico Richter, Emmerich Deutsch, Richard Deutsch, Erich Bäcker, Christian Lohwasser, Bernd Lohwasser, Enrico Thäter, the second pilot and in the front the owner of the airfild and initiator of the Joe Nall, Pat Hartness.

Very impressive...but fail to see the appeal of a jet hovering, unless it's a very scale Harrier (AV8). Might not be a popular opinion, but I prefer seeing highly scale models emulating their full-scale counterparts.
Im not big on prop hangin' either.
If it ain't scale...it's crrrrraaaaapppp!

I have to agree with you SD but you have to admit that what he's doing with that jet really takes confidence and lots of flying skill.

To each his own, I suppose........I'll split the middle.

I have no desire to 3D my proppies, but would LOVE to learn that with a future jet !

I'll bet that demo was just breathtaking !

........I don't think anyone should put mustard on their hamburgers, I think everyone should do like I do and only use ketchup. This is the way hamburgers were originally intended to be consumed, anything else is just cccrrrraaapppp!

No...if it ain't SCALE it's ccrrrapp!
This would be much closer to comparing turkeyburger to hamburger. Not condiments.
I have a great deal of respect for the guy and think he's an incredible pilot and yes, it would be something to see.
My comment has nothing to do with piloting skills...and I was just expressing my opinion.
Never said you had to agree. If agreeing with me was required, I'd have told you so.

I was there and watched it all 3 days! Not really into the 3D thing and love scale but it was just awesome

Not that impressive.. I'd say that's 3 or 4 inches off the ground not 2 inches!!

Everyone always talks about skill etc. There is no question that the guy has skill. I wonder though, how much of those hovering maneuvers (or portions of it) are programmed in his TX?

You can't program the maneuvers into the radio, but you can use gyros to ease the pain.

As I was told when I was in the Air Force, there are a lot of Bold pilots and a lot of Old pilots but not many Old Bold pilots. When you fly on the edge, you will eventually feel the sharpness of the blade. I hope no one get hurt when that happens.

Hovering is for helicopters!! Planes should fly on their wings!! (and hey - you don't have to agree, but I'm right!!! )

That's why we fly RC. The statement in reference to the Air Force is referring to the pilots, not bystanders. With RC it's unlikely if it went wrong anyone would be hurt besides the jet itself and the pilots ego. It would actually be more dangerous going out of control at speed or altitude flying in a scale manner. Then it would be ballistic...

Hi guys!

That hovering is just a part of the show and shows the ability of the Jet and it's very lightweight construction that make sit possible. The other 3D manouvers are somehow scale if you ever watched anything else than american jets . The russian guys just fly the crap out of their thrust-vectored MiGs and Sukhois.

There is a video of their show at Joe Nall. You are not supposed to like what they do, but take the chance and watch that video. I have never seen better formation flying with jets than theirs.

Best regards,

I think the key word here is ingenuity !!!

Without guys like Ralf, our hobby wouldnt have gone to new places.. we all owe these guys a huge THANK YOU, they do all the development, research and tests that we will all enjoy some day.

These guys rock !!
tahfiet, thanks so much for the video.

I agree -
it's a great feat and takes a lot of skills and courage to fly like that, and how anyone can build a nice plane like that
from scratch is beyond me!! However, being somewhat of a purist and an OF, I enjoy watching scale model
replicate what the fullsize does. I have a Sukhoi 27 and I admire what the russian guys do with them, and
would like to do that with my own plane. As long as hovering is not possible with the full size planes, I just
don't like it!! (no offense - just a personal preference!!)

Why isn't it possible with a real thrust vectoring jet? Their thrust:weight ratio is better than 1... It's just they don't do it and they don't do it because if it goes wrong it goes back to the saying LSF2298 pointed out... when you're in the plane and you screw up, you don't get a redo you die. In RC we can break planes trying stuff and fix or replace them. A little lighter in the wallet but alive. In real life, not so much. But from a technical standpoint at least a few modern thrust vectoring fighters could theoretically do a tail stand. I don't think you'll ever actually see it though, at least not close to the ground.

It's impressive I have to admit, but we all have our different preferences. That is clear. For me, the first time I saw jet's I was yeah these are cool, they are very fast but they basically can't do a lot. They go from one end of the field to the other then straight up to bleed off speed and then do much the same going the other way. They can do rolls and loops and go fast but basically they seemed like a real expensive way to get bored to me. Because for me that's what "scale flying" in RC is. For others I know they are into making it every detail like the original and I do love to look at and photograph those planes. But lets face it a B-17 or B-24 etc. fought it's way into the air, it wasn't very maneuverable, it wasn't very fast, and a true scale version of it would be the same (although even very scale RC versions typically have far more power/weight than the originals but I digress) and flying like that really (to me) gets old quick. Then last year I began seeing jets with thrust vectoring... that changed everything in my view of jets. I watched a Kingcat do a descending flat spin at the DOGS show in Dayton last year and I was like hmmm this is cool. Then I saw some other stuff like this. Now I plan on getting a turbine myself and expanding into that arena. Even if it will take years to get a jet built and get a turbine cert. and years more to be able to do that sort of thing with one. If it wasn't for people like these leading the way I'd have never considered it. So in that respect I agree with i3dm.

It's not that you have to do it or even like it but the expansion of ability brings more people into the hobby and expands the horizons of the rest of us already in it and that can't help but be good for us all.

I think it's really cool....
The great thing about this hobby is all the different types of pilots and planes...
if we all flew the same planes and styles it would be a bore...
at the field I enjoy seeing all types.. from the cheapest foamy.. big 3d... to scale jets... if it flys it's cool with me

I'd bet most wish they could fly like that guy

I saw the demonstration and thrust vectoring is very impressive. Hovering is not for me but the control at 50 to 100 feet altitude was very effective. The tailpipe is on a gimbal and controlled by two servos. The tailpipe did not appear to be a solid connection to the turbine. I thought the setup was very clever and the pilot was indeed talented.

Whether you like it or not, you cannot deny the skill involved.
I hate golf, but have great admiration for the skill involved.
Hats off to these guys, great performance, fun to watch.[8D]
