Default TIP / TRICK Using EV5U-PRO Valve with 12X

Here's a little tip or trick for getting the biggest bang for your buck out of the EV5U-Pro valve when using your 12X. Obviously, there's more than one way to skin a cat, but this is what I've found works GREAT!

The EV5U pro is a great all in one valve. We have found a couple issues in testing, but Todd has been on the ball getting a software issue resolved and fielded. The only thing that concerned me with the valve was using the "proportional" or "anti-lock" mode on the valve. For those of us that don't have a huge brake tank, the little air that's in there is very precious.

I did numerous tests and found that I could only get about 10-15 seconds of usable pressure out of the stock tanks that came with my Bandit Arf, when the tank was pressurized up to 100psi. While this was more than enough air to bring the plane to a nice controlled stop after landing, it MAY not account for holding the plane in place while waiting to taxi out, or to hold the brakes during spool-up. Now, fortunately, the EV unit is smart enough to be able to set it up so that the ant-lock kicks on at 10% throw, and goes to full (non-pulsing) brake at 90% throw. Anything after 90% and the valve just locks in the full brake position.

So, I had two choices:

1) Pulse the brakes manually with the right eye-brow momentary button and have more than enough air. This option makes your air go the longest, but locks the tires on landing if your pressure it too high. Manually pulsing the brakes only loses about 1-2 psi per pulse.

2) Use the anti-lock feature in the valve, and only have 10-15 seconds of braking power. The benefit is smooth even braking, but the downside is a shortened usable time on the brakes. And, if you want to slow down or stop on the way out to the runway, your using valuable seconds....

Using a mix, I combined both options and maximized my valve capabilities. So, without further ado, here's how I set it up on the radio:

Under Menu item 17 "DeviceSEL", I set the following:

Aux 3 (my brake channel) - Set up on the right flap slider
Aux 7 (unused channel on rx) - Set up on the R.Trim (make sure you have the "Momentary Button" feature turned ON!

Now under the "Function List" menu of the model, I set up the following:

Prog.Mix2 (could be any one of the non-curve mixes on your radio)

Aux7 to Aux3

Pos. 0
(+) -125%
(-) 0%

I left Pos. 1 at 0 and 0 for both (=) and (-).

Then go to the "Offset" and set it to -100.

Quick note, you may have to reverse either Aux 3 or Aux 7 to make sure that the servo is traveling in the correct direction to activate the brake valve.

OK, what has this accomplished. Well, if you followed the instructions (and if I did a decent job explaining the process) you now have two ways to activate your brake. You have the proportional/anti-lock feature on the right flap slider (remember, you only have 10-15 seconds of usable brake here....reserve this for LANDING only). You ALSO have a user-controlled pulsing brake on the right eyebrow momentary button. This allows you to tap this when you need to to stop or slow the plane on the taxi-out, or to brake the plane taxiing back to the pits. You can still use the slider for a "Parking Brake" at full deflection if you need it.

So, you can use the eyebrow for minimal air usage going out to takeoff, use the anti-lock on landing, then use the eyebrow again for the taxi back in. For those with a proportional brake already, (Smooth Stop, UP6) you probably use a slider already anyway. The only change is using the eyebrow for taxiing out and back, so it shouldn't "complicate" things for you on landing.

I hope this helps someone out there. As always, feel free to leave any comments or questions.

Now if someone can convert that into operation on the 9303 I'll be happy. Right now I use the full brake option simply because I also found that the air supply was limited with the anti lock even with my large air tank.

The set-up is the same for the 9303. You have the right slider, you just have to designate the other switch for the full brake. I would use the momentary button up top if it's not already being used.

Thanks Chad. I'll give it a try.

Hi Guys,

I have an issue programming the 12X for brake in my jet:

I am using the EV-5U as well. Aux6 is for the brake , and for now I use the right knob for brake , just for testing purposes.
My goal is to have the brake functional when pushing down on the elev. stick, when gear is out only.

The thing is, I can only operate the brake function while the gear is in! For some reason when the retracts are out - no brake, when they are in - yes brake.
I tried to reverse the gear, or the brake - still they always work opposite.
I even connected a regular servo to the RX Aux6 instead of the EV5U cable - and still the same, so I guess it is a radio issue and not the EV5U issue.

Cna you guys help?

Thanks,
Zivo
