Is anyone flying a Combat Models A-10? I want to know what the weight is, the specs say 4-6 pounds but to offset the weight of the ys45, you need to add allot of lead. I had to add 30 oz of lead to get the CG. I also placed the electroincs and 1300 mha JR battery as far everything as far forward as I could.
Just wondering?

On mine I also had to add so much lead that it was a real pig to fly. It took LOTS of runway to take off and the only fun manuever possible was an aileron roll. Looked great though.

This Combat Models A-10 is a joke, even with 30 oz of lead, a large JR 1300 mha battery, and all servos mounted towards the front, the cg is still to far aft.
I'm thinking about mounting the engine in the nose, it will kill the looks but it should fly good.
To bring the plane in CG (2.5" behing the TE, I added so much lead that the plane will exceed the wing loading. With the plane in CG it weighs 8.6 pounds. Way over weight!

Me too on this weight thing and I am discouraged. Haven't tried a YS-45 yet, but have flown it on a different 45. Can't remember if it is MDS or Megatech or something like that. A friend let me borrow it.
Anyway, just wondering if it is worth splurging on the YS-45. Czonio have you had any more luck? I too was thinking of mounting the motor in the nose. It looks great, but I may just sell it because I don't know what exactly to do to get it to perform well. Thanks for any help!

mokied,
I have parked my A-10 in the corner for the moment and have been contemplating what to do? Before I do anything so drastic as to mount the engine on the front, I'm going to try and lighten up the tail as much as I can and move everything in the avionics bay forward to bring in the CG without adding weight.
I probably won't get to the plane anytime soon, but I will post my results.
Stay tuned!
Chris

HI,
I'm just about to finish with my CBM A-10. i've got a few questions.
1) did anyone make the aileron trim tabs? how well do they work?
2) What are you using for pylons, for the bombs/mavericks?
3) What type of fuel proofer and sealing did you use?
4 What type of paint works best? i want a desert camo design.
Thanx, any help would be appreciated.

Hi Gromitvt
I didn't do the aileron trim tabs. It flew ok without them. I think I rolled it once, but it was a slow roll. I didn't fly it but about 10 minutes before it died and sank like a rock with the 45 motor. I've got a YS-45 now, but haven't put it in yet. Haven't done the bomb stuff yet either. I used the fiberglassing method in the plans and then used some Krylon paint from Walmart that was camo paint. I wouldn't do it again though because you have to be super careful not to get to close at first because the petroleum distillates in the paint will melt the foam. It worked, but I would use some water based paint from a hardware store. You can put it in an air brush gun and shoot it on that way. Don't use too much to keep it as light as possible. Then I used some clear fuelproof from the hobby shop. They say that you can use rc car paint from your hobby shop as I think it is fuelproof too. Findind the right stuff and getting it to work was a pain in the butt for me, but it is done. LEt me know how things go.

HI Mark, thanx for the response. DO you know the name of the "clear fuelproof" was? I also did the fibreglassing, but ionly did the wings, fuse and horizontal stab. I've got a O.S. FXI .46 motor that i'm putting on it. I fly from a concrete runway and i'm not looking for high performance aerobatics, just want s scale flying model, low, slow with nice 90 degree banks and strafing runs. Hope this motors will at least do that for me. thanx again

Unfortunately it's nearly impossible to make it fly scale with the weight up where it has to be to CG correctly. Mine looked *****in but it just wasnt fun to fly. It didnt want to snap very badly at slow speed but you coulnt fly it slow enough or climb steep enough to look very scale like. It was probably 3 lbs too heavy. I will post a pic as soon as I can scan one in.

OH the trim tabs are a nice touch.

Thanks for the info whiteside. Grommitvt I used Lustercote clear fuelproofing. Mine looks good too, but is really heavy. I agree with whiteside about it being 3lbs or so overweight. Anyone think of trying a nose mount? You would still have to add tail weight and by my calculations would only save 1 lb or so. Whiteside, are you still flying yours?

Hey Kyle,
I wouldn't use a .60 on this plane, too much weight.
On my A-10, I had to add allot ballast weight in the nose to bring in the CG. This effects the wing loading and then your flight performance sucks. I flew it once and barley got it back down safely.
I used the fuel proof Top flight paint in a can, but it didn't seem very fuel proof. My hands turn olive drab green every time I handle the airplane. Construction was per the plans and A-10 video, I don't know how they can build a ready to fly A-10 at 6 lbs?
Anyway,
it's on my list to get it flying this summer and will post my mods as soon as I get some good results.
BRG,
Chris

Its been so many years agosince I built mine. nearly 8-9 now. I remember using Testors and then clearing over it with perfect clear. I think that worked OK but if you leave any fuel sitting stagnant and the nitro separates out from the fuel..........what I'm getting at is the Nitro will eat right through the paint. And where the engine was mounted gets soft and squishy.
Overall I was Really pleased with the A10 except for the weight. The thing looked great and flew maginally. it loved the ground and woulnt rotate well but that was from too low a deck angle. if it were scaled up about 30% NOW THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING!
A YS.45 is the perfect motor but without a pipe it just didnt have the poop!

Thanx

OK here is a "Valid" question. Is anyone using flaps on takeoff with the A-10? i'll be using a O.S. .46FXI with standard muffler, so i figure i may need to use flaps on takeoff. thanx

Hey,
I built this airplane about seven times. I used to live very close to their warehouse, so I was in there hanging with those guys at least once a week for years. Nice plane if you do it right.
