There is more job on the inside of the wing, than one imagine! All the pieces of web between the main spars, on each side of the wheel well and the gear rails have been glued....
The outer flap is trial fitted...only room for a Hitec 5245 MG servo (5,5kgs at 6 volts) which should be enough.

Removed the part of the rib in the wheel well and epoxied carbon weave onto the balsa skin. Cut out for the servo in the rib so I could use a Hitec 5645 servo. A plywood reinforcement will take care of the weakened rib.
The balsa top skin has got a layer of epoxy and fiber glass under the flap and where the servo is going to be....

Well...in spite of loosing "steam" due to TOO MUCH winter, I have managed to cover the wing and cut the two parts loose... Afterwards a little filler and sanding will be needed, but actually the proccess was rather uncomplicated [:-]

Now I have installed the main landing gear and gear doors. I have planked the missing part of the wing and cut out an access door for the flap servo. Glued a piece of "Pro-Skin" on the top and bevelled the edges. (Pro-skin" is a thin fiberglass skin)
The outer geardoor will be kept open by the small spring, and closed when the wheel press down on the wire attached to the lower part of the geardoor...

I cut the aileron loose from the wing on the band saw. Glued the leading edge on and sanded it, so the front became rounded. Beveled the wing skin on top and bottom and sanded the ribs to suit the leading edge of the aileron.

Nice work. You are making great progress by the looks.
Nice work. You are making great progress by the looks.
Had to cut out a bit of the leading edge on 4 places and glue in the missing balsa. Then glue the leading edge bits in place again...an operation which wasn´t as bad as it sounds....
So now the Robart hinges are installed and this wing section laid aside while building the right wing panel.
PS:
Servo hatch has been cut out, and new hatch made of 2,5mm ply fabricated ready to be installed with servo and all.

Hello,
Can anyone please post a picture of the cross section of the boom / vertical stabiliser of the high horizontal stabiliser version. preferably, looking from tail to nose. Mine does not look quite right and I would like to check it before attaching the fins.
Thanks
Warwick

Further progress...
I have eventually finished the right wing panel. Spent quite some time with the ailerons. Gluing in balsa blocks in wing and aileron, adjusting the Robart hinges plus sanding the ribs to fit the leading edge on the aileron....
The servo tray was done using 2,5mm plywood. On top of that I glued a layer of "Pro-Skin" ( thin fiberglass sheet) protruding 5mm on all 4 sides...

Nice work Pete, any more progress since these images?
Unfortunately my plans to get the kit have been foiled by work cutbacks so looks like I am not going to be joining in the fun. Look forward to seeing your results though, I am becoming interested in the colors you have chosen...

Hi Astro,
Just a little progress since those photos.... The flying season has begun and I have laid the Vampire aside for the time being.
I am going to start on the booms as soon as I take up the construction work again...

Wow: not sure how I missed this build thread:
I have the 5th scale which is just about completely framed: Give me a day to go through all your posts and see if I can add anything

Hi All
Just a suggestion but you may wish to look at the modifications to the hatches on my Vampire. I also made the booms removable from the rear of the wing, make everything a bit more manageable.
Cheers

O.K. gang here goes: the following posts will be showing the progress I have made on my 5thy scale Vampire. Looks like I am just a little ahead of Pete: Sorry I didn't do a build thread, considered it as I have profited by so many, The photos are not real good, still using an old camera, (new one comming) however it will show what I have done to date. Feel free to contact me in regards to any procedure or process, I will be happy to provide info and close up photos: This page will show the fuse. Its been rough sanded wing roots done and inboad flap fitted. The nose is not completed as i am still waiting for the retracts from Sierra Giant Scale

Wing: I have decided to use the "Rotary Drive System" for Aileron, Elevator and Rudders, this eliminates the need for any outside pushrods or control horns: really a neat system

Rudder and Boom: still working on these: booms are partially done waiting for the rudders so I can verify fit before all the block balsa fillets
rudders were a bugger to engineer the "Rotary Drive Sysytem" due to the very small space: I'll post more photos when these assembly's are finished

Inboard Wing panel
Although both dive brake and Flap have been fitted the sheeting is incomplete due to the delay of receiving the main gear retracts
