I have a Regal Eagle I won on e-bay that I have yet to start. I have 2 OS 77's. One is on a Byro fan, the other on a Turbax III. The one not used will be used for spare parts. Now, which way to go? Push (Byron) or Pull (Turbax)?
Thanks.

HI rcnats I am building a Regal eagle and I used OS77 and a dynamax fan for mine. I don't think it will make much difference other that top end.

Engine was upright and there was no cheater. This worked fine with the OS.77. The .91 is taller and that may be why it is shown sideways in the fuselage. On the TopGun F-15 there is a cut out just big enough for the head to stick through. I would do that before I would lay it on it's side :spinnyeye

Rcnats - I have built the Regal Eagle in both the pusher and tractor configurations and recommend the tractor configuration. If you use a well-designed inlet duct and a properly sized exhaust duct, the performance is better. It also stays a *lot* cleaner inside the fuselage without the Byron grease sprayer setup. BTW, I have regularly flown either configuration off a 400' grass field.

I sugest a Byron, with a large cheater hole
and the engine upside down. You can start the
plane upside down while it sits on the rudders and
flip it over. I think the Byron has more static thrust
but the top end may be off a bit.

Actually the Regal Eagle needs no cheater hole with a Byron fan. The only thing that needs to be done for grass field operation is to make sure the plane has a lot of positive incidence sitting on the gear (Nose High). Also use 3/16" wire on the nose or it will flex back and lower the nose.

Hi ,
I designed the Regal Eagle to fly with a .61 RE. with tuned pipe off grass.
Any thing more will fly it great, I have been recomending tractor fans (dynamax) because Byron Pushers are hard to find since they went out of business and only sell fuells now.
If you got the instructions with your kit you would be told the difference in tractor VS> pusher.
Either is ok.

Which way do your plans show the engine leaning with the ByroJet installation when mounted sideways? Looking to the front, is it leaning right or left (or more properly and accurately, starboard or port)? Thanks- AL

I believe the diagram shows the engine laying to the right side. I built all of mine with the engine straight up. There are a couple of pics of my last one in my gallery.
IMHO laying the engine on it's side is going to create some difficult service issues.

HI guys name is angel, i build two of them, one with OS91 on byron, and the other K/B82 on the dyn. we have a grass field about 250 long. With the byron the roll off was less then 100ft. Now the one with the dyna. I made fibergl, inlet and outlet and the exhaust is about 5in, so there two 2 and a half inches in di, the dyn, is 5 1/4 in di. does that sound about right. Well soon find out this weeken.

Hi,
You mentioned Byron fan or turbax, not dynamax as the responders said.
We only recomend the Byron if you have one, the Dynamax, or Ramtech or our discontinued vector fan, do not use a .90 on a vector 80 or a .80 or .90 on a vector .65 Does not work and is dangerous.
I have tested a lot of fans and only the above can I guaantee will take of rough grass in less than 60 feet, you can get a free video showing this.
I love to see new jet modelers and have promoted all my competition but if you can not see them fly from a grass field like yours at least on video ask them to send you a video before you pute all the time it takes to build a jet.not to mention the money.

Hello,
Word of caution! Be careful buying anything from Bob Parkinson. If you’re compelled to do so, I would recommend you place your order with a credit card. I ordered a Regal Eagle kit, retracts, and starter probe. I got the kit about 3 months later, the retracts and starter probe about 6 months later. This was only after I had filed a complaint with the State district attorney. Moreover, there is no consistency in what you get in the kit. One video Bob sales mentions that you do get the construction video with our Regal Eagle kit. However, Bob charged me something like $25.00 bucks for a video that is worthless. Additionally, the quality of the construction video is shabby and the audio quality is worse.
I have not built the kit yet (bought in 1997) because I could never get Bob to reply to my email messages on purchasing an inlet set for my fan. Looking back I’m glad I did not send him any more money.
These are my experiences, perhaps I was one of the unlucky ones or Bob just doesn’t run a good business, have good ethics or care about his customers. If he had I feel that he would have tried to rectified my problem from a professional business owner position.

RCNats,
Is the Turbax III the only tractor fan you have? I've never seen one installed in an aircraft, and have heard that they're no good. If those are your only two choices, I'd go with the Byrojet. Good luck!
