RE: Just Wondering????????
Back in the day (before I decided to take the shape of Jabba the Hut) I stopped flying models so that I could receive aerobatics instruction in a Decathlon. I could not afford to fund two hobbies. I'm here to tell you that when the adrenaline's flowing, you can bet the cash is flowing as fast if not faster. If you don't think someone could spend 10k and up on a model, you just don't know what it takes to make some people happy. Heck, I did not give up on recreational drugs because I wanted to- I just couldn't afford to cut back on my plane budget to get the money!!:D- Frank

RE: Just Wondering????????
I personaly think as far as sanity goes on buying a model airplane for $15 to $20k if the guy can aford to buy it and can lose the money if it crashes
thats fine, its the people that i see spend money they don't have and can't aford to lose that kills me.. they charge there new jet to the credit card and next thing you know they have 9 or 10k on there card and it its secound flite its batt died and now its all over the ground and for what? just to run with the big dogs.. i would love to have the extra money to buy a big highend jet but i have to stay on the porch with the little dogs. to compare a model jet with a boat or car i don't think so, try to get full coverege ins on the jet and they would prob say no, and to get a loan on one it will not stand good for its self as colateral and if it did they wouldn't let you fly it[&o] its just not the same. models are expendable you crash you lose i had a bvm t33 with 18lbs thrust turbin, yellow f-16, jhh jets and byron, i have never flown a model worth more than the bvm t33, i would like to know however does a 20k model fly like it cost that much? can a guy have as good a time flying a $5k model? if you got two of the same airframes and spend 20k on one and 5k on the othere could you tell it? and IMO there is that few that think they have to have the most expensive or the big'st at the field.. now don't nobody get mad its just MO. ive been around a few that think that way. |

ORIGINAL: FalconWings You don't really need to be rich. A Dr or a lawyer (I should say a good one) can esily grease more than a million a year. With that kind of a salary and some good investements..........you could buy a lot of model jets over the years. A $20,000 model is just pennies when you make 7 figures. There are a LOT of modelers making that much money in Florida. I personally know Cardiologists that make $40K a week. That's two Ultra Bandit's a week. :D Also know some good lawyers that made $1500 an hour, and are now in jail. [:@] David Lawyers in jail???? Well, that'a a start! I have been looking on the jets classified section and have counted atleast 9 jets that the asking price is atleast over $12,000.00. I'm just wondering, given the state of the economy, would anyone really pay that type of money for a model plane? When someone prices a model in the $15,000 to $19,000, are you really wanting to sell it ,or just bragging that have the ability to spend that type of money on a model. I'll start with mine. - John. |

BTW,
There was a guy in our club that charged something like $20 an hour to teach how to fly. True, no one else charges anything. Well, I saw officers from my club yell what sounded like profanity to this guy becaue he charged for flight lessons. Turned out, this guy was Paul Metz........TEST PILOT OF THE F-22 RAPTOR. I thought that he was charging a very reasonable fee, and he had customers willing to pay it. I'd pay that fee just to hear his flight test stories. Then again we would end up with the $1500 lawyer because it's probably all classified. [8D] |

I was an officer of a club where this very topic came up a number of times, and where the club had to forbid paid flight instruction on site because it is a condition of their lease that no 'for profit activity' take place on club premises - and the landowner reminded us of that condition periodically. Us allowing some guy to make a few bucks on the side could have risked losing the field for hundreds of other members. Even activities such as a swap-meet can get some clubs in hot water with their landowner. Now, I don't know the conditions of the specific club that you mention, so their case could very well be different - I'm simply pointing out that there can often be much more to the issue than you are seeing at the surface. RE: Just Wondering????????
Mr. Wexler,
for your information I do know what goes into building such a model. I built a Y/A F18 a few years ago, and did spend about $7000 not including RAM 1000 turbine. I do know what research and engineering is required to build a such a model as yours. For your information I have been in the aircraft maint. field for 32 yeras, and typed rated in a Cessna Citation Bravo. I'm just inquiring to see if anyone is willing to spend that much on a jet these days. If you can afford it, more power to you. I do agree with the one gentleman that had said there are some that really get caught up in the moment of building a jet at times, and do charge more than they can afford. Is there really that much more research and such that goes into a $15000 model versus a $5000 one? If there is it's not much. In my fleet right now I have a JHH A7,$5000 including turbine, a TAMJETS A4, $1000 for just the kit, a Y/A F16, $2200 (no turbine), and a Beech Staggerwing,$2000, so that adds up to alittle over $10,000 for 4 airplanes. So as far as your statement of I don't know how to open my wallet is far from the truth. I personally just won't spend the big ticket money anymore. Just like the one gentleman said on here, does your F4 fly any better than say the TJ A4 I have? I know one thing, they all make the same sound when they crash. |

RE: Just Wondering????????
The difference is quality....they do fly similar but not always the same. They often stay together longer. My A-10 KIT was over 12,000 with nothing in it...now outfit and your not bragging, just with a lot less in your checking account. You do get what you pay for. I currently have several jets in the hanger and this is with out a doubt the nicest AND the most expensive. Good luck with your flying, your planes and the level of quality you like and spend your money on. I will do the same.

RE: Just Wondering????????
I would rather say instead that it was a unfortunate incident with your plane, with some light damage that can be easily repaired at some expense, greately increased by Colombia´s tax policy. ;) I am sure that you´ll be flying again soon!

RE: Just Wondering????????
My take (for what it's worth)... If you truly wanted to get "a feel" for what people may or may not buy and/or how much they would pay for an item, I would have recommended that you write the post in the form of a "poll" or multiple "polls"... that way you would stay clear of any "personal attacks" or whatever, and get some hard data that could help you better understand the market and how it is developing or not-developing... you could get real intricate as well, and direct the people to a complex poll where you could get all sorts of data, like how demographics play into it, in many forms... be that location, age, income range, mental stability (j/k - had to throw that in), etc.... you get the drift, I am sure.... I think you could have some fun with it, as well as it would be interesting to see the results (at least for me, I love data, marketing, etc.)
Best of luck. Don |
