RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Hi bcrc
I am thinking with the stumax it will come in around 26-27 pounds with batteries and the dyn-e-max will probably be a bit over 30. We should see Tams A10 flying this next weekend with his new 110mm fans that have the dynamax rotor. There have been quite a few people wanting to set there A10 up with the stumax. Guess they have been busy. thanks chris |

Some scale gear in the works. I recieved some not quite finished pics from manufacturer today. Should have these by next week. There will be 2 versions. Semi scale (cheaper version) and fully scale with taxi lights all scale collars, trailing links etc. I did not get any pics of the mains but when i recieve them i will be posting. There is a pic of mains scissors below.

Thanks Paul. Could not help myself. Had to go that little extra distance. Have you made time for any projects yet?
I recieved the scale retracts a few days ago. These will be the basic set. The scale set will have the trailing link actuators with a slip on detail over the strut, lights, canister etc. Working out a few small bugs and i will be sending them back in for the works. if one wants the scale main struts can be switched out with the older style robarts because they have a 1/2 drop down diameter on the strut. Unfortunately with the front the whole strut and retract unit would have to be switched out. The actual diameter of the struts will also be in scale with the airframe. Mains being 5/8" and nose 1/2". chris |

On my next build i decided to try a shot at doing some dome rivets. The process is a bit faster than i had thought but still pretty time consuming, especially on the A-10. Looks like someone had taken a machine gun to the back end of the A-10 with all them rivets. I could have done a less time consuming layout of the rivets but i like things a bit more on the scale side, so i have done a bit more studying of the pics of the real A-10 to get them pretty accurate. As you can tell, i have been jumping around with the rivets and have yet to fully complete one section. With the method i am using, i am very impressed and pleased at how these came out. I think i only have about 5000 left.

RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Wow. Really nice and neat work.
What technique did you use?? Rgds Mark |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Thanks Mark. I always thought about doing them with a syrenge with glue but out of all the pics i have seen with them done that way, i did not think they looked that nice and it looked time consuming. Instead i used the vinyl cutter and cut out lengths of strips with holes. Layed the strips out where i wanted the rivets and ran a bead of glue straight down the strips over the holes. After i applied the glue, i pulled the strips up and you get some pretty precise rivets. I first tried it by dabbing the glue in the holes but this method had taken more time, so i decided to just run a bead across them. The bead does not even have to have an equal thickness the whole length and the rivets come out the same every time ,so you can get a bit sloppy with it without the worry. I was going to try this a long time ago but Fahim from wowplanes brought it back to my attention so i decided to give it a whirl. Works great.
thanks chris |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Chris,
Nice to see you using this riveting technique. Sure makes it easy and the results are a lot better than the old syringe and shaky hand method. I use the rivet stencil in two ways. The way you describe above is one way and that results in domed rivets. The other way is to leave the vinyl dots in place and that produces a flush rivet effect. No glue needed in the latter case. Here is the spec page on my stencils. http://www.wowplanes.com/index.php?c...da5261a65c37b9 Fahim |

Yes Fahim. Very simple method with great results. I am glad i tried it.
I spent a bit of time finishing up the rear fuse section today seeings this is where most of the work is at. All down hill from there but i still need to do the engine nacelle. All in all i think it will come to about 3 days work. Part of this time was designing the different hole patterns on the vinyl cutter, so its hard to say. I wanted to mix up the rivet patterns a bit like the real A-10. I think for the amount of time involved , the rewards will be great. chris |

Chris,
Holy crap that looks incredible! I do appreciate the added work and look forward to putting it together. I received my black StuMax 110-52's and they look incredible. I have one of the orange SM110-52's and Stu put a lot of effort into painting them black. Thank you Mark Brown for having it done first. I've been gathering the bits and pieces so I can put this together quickly. I've been sharing the pics from this site with a few of my flying buds and they can't wait for me to get it built and flying. We have a 2000' long asphalt runway I plan to maiden it from...up near your area of the state Chris. Mark |

Morning Chaps
I am fitting my wings tonight and sorting out the c of g and battery locations. Ill post some pictures when complete. For your information im trying 12s Turnigy Nano packs. I have power tested them and on TP 30c and had 3800watts per fan. The only thing I need to do now is order another one with rivets............................................ .. Im still not sure about the flap and elevator mix if any one has that information please post. Mark |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Chris,
I'm impressed, and glad you enjoy doing those details too. The Air Force base near Vacaville is where I plan on doing the first flight, it has a closed 2000' asphalt runway. I get up that way about once a month for military duty. Mark Brown, Your A-10 wIth those black StuMax EDFs is what sold me on this kit...that and Chris' excellent building skills and his enthusiasm with his kit. I look forward to seeing more pics of your assembly. Mark |

Just like any jet don't get to slow, this is a scale warbird and if you get slow any of them will bite. Is that Travis AFB? if so can you have guest? I'm about 35 minutes away and would love to see and hear a twin Stu Max powered one go... maybe I could bring my spark too. Go luck with it, it's an awesome plane, Chris is a good guy with a fantasitic product. I'd love to get one someday... I have way to many projects at the moment :D Ron |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
I have trial fitted the wings tonight and have trial tested the c of g at the 4" rear of the leading edge and with the 12s x 2 Turnigy Nano 5000s it balances. I will have a test later to see what happens with all the wheels up as this should put it nose heavy. The Turnigys run at 4000watts full throttle so bundles of power. The battery location is good as I intend to make two battery holders that fit in through the main access hatch and ill leave the cockpit closed. Ill post some photos soon.
Ron what was your flight times on the Spark ? Mark |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Ron,
It is Travis AFB, and yes we can have guests there. I would like to see the Spark fly (have been looking at getting one). I don't live in the area, but I do my military duty there (KC-10 refuelers). I'll let you know next time I'm up that way for, you can come on over and fly, meet some of the guys who are local. Mark |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Ron what was your flight times on the Spark ? but I'm only pulling 85 amps and 3600 watts. The fan is just so smooth and powerful, I really love my Stu Max. here's a link to a old video of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sRhYfqX9-0 she is still going strong with 12s you should start with a short flight time and build it up as you see what you put back... but I bet 5:00 to 6:00 will be the norm for you |

RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Hi Ron,
I always appreciate the words of thanks for serving. Not sure when it will be completed and in my hands, but my plan is to have it ready to fly by February (thats the next time i'm driving up that way for duty). I'll be up there before that for a weekend at a time, but it's getting into the rainy season so not sure what the flying conditions will be like. I'll definitely make sure I call before the first flight, if nothing else come on over and we'll have lunch, i'll show you around and see if we can't get some time in the KC-10 simulator and an aircraft tour. MarkN |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Sweet! Mark
Man I would love to check out the base and simulator that would be unreal! I have been there for a couple airshows but never to see the displays. drop me a line and good luck with the build. later Ron |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Ron,
I used to teach in the simulator there at Travis before I took a job with the airlines, so most of the guys I worked with are still there. The base has a decent aircraft museum with a lot of static displays. The flightline is usually calm during the weekends so should be easy to get out and take a peek at the jet. I'll get in touch with you let you know. I hope to have the A-10 by the end of the month or the middle of December at the latest. Working on a 1/8 Global Jet Club F-16, I want to have that ready too, but as soon as the A-10 arrives i'm putting it together since it will require the least amount of time to get flying. I'm going to try those new HV servos from JR as long as they have ones that will fit. Chris sent me a list of servos that Tam used in his A-10 project. I'm still deciding on whether to use 10S 65C 6500 MaH or 12S 45C 5000 MaH, will have to keep researching... MarkN |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Im going to add a bit more raised paneling detail for the latch areas on the engine nacelle. I used some .010 styrene to cut this detail out on the vinyl cutter. The cutter does not cut all the way through the plastic but leaves some nice scribed lines where the plastic will snap at. It also makes a nice flush rivet effect.

RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Hi Chris,
How's the build coming along? Any new updates or pictures? The nacelle detail looks great. |
