lol.

Surely the purple bits make up for that though right?

I do love my Savage though, enough to take it out during this past hurricane and tear up the backyard in 30MPH+ winds. It's a nice truck and very reliable. So far there's been no major problems with it, or nothing requiring more than a few bucks to fix for good.

I'm starting to grow on the design of the mammoth though, I really like the way it's all mounted to a single aluminum plate. It seems more durable this way, easier to clean and a better surface to slide over during extreme crawling. My LST needs some serious skids down below unless I plan on letting all the servos and CVD's getting ripped out from a barrage of rocks. Sounds like a worth investment to me, especially considering it actually only cost you $20 initially.

Hi RAYRAY, just to give some of my input, the Mam is a great kit as is the Sav, all these kits have ther own quirks, on the Mam as with other kits out there, one thing that will help with most all kits that use there shock towers as a body support is to mod this area, btw true "pan chassis" kits like the Mam with give you the lowest CG possible for the best in high speed handling, componet protection and overall performance that other non pan kits can not.

I will copy and paste info from our club site www.nitroextreme.com because no one is allowed to post any forum links anymore on RCU.

Tech info taken from nitroextreme.
quote...
I have seen lots of guys having problems with bending there shock towers when they pancake or crash into things. The best body mount system for ANY r/c is one that does not have or use the tops of the shock towers for mounts, the trick is to have a more independent body mount system away from the shock towers so the shock towers can do there original job better by just being "shock towers".

I use the "STOCK" $7.70 MRC thunder King virgin nylon body mounts on many of my kits and it turns out they work great on this kit as well. I also put on an extra front bumper on the rear for better protection from tail landings, other simular independet body mount systems may work also.

The lower part of these mounts that are mounted on the other side of the shock towers mounts are 6mm thick and stiff, I think they maybe a bit to thick, 3mm maybe better because it would offer more movment/flexablity. Most importantly there is a gap/space between the shock towers and body mount system so the body mounts can flex and move in a collision/tail landing/pancake without stressing the shock towers

Again i8tweety, it would have been easyer just to post the link, I am tired now and have to take a nap from all the extra typing

That is a very cool body mount system and a good idea. The reason that a brace system is important though is that the Mammoth Shock towers are a high stress part and they are mounted directly to the diff cases. The diff case tower mount goes back to the Mammoth's buggy heritage. The brace ties the two shock towers together and keeps them from collapsing in on eachother in a hard crash or a bad landing. The huge chassis is also prone to flex badly with no support from the top of the towers. Before I put the brace on I could actually flex the truck in almost any direction just by twisting it in my hands. Once the brace was in place the truck is rock solid. Comparing videos of unbraced mammoths to the way my truck runs over rough, rutted terrain at high speeds you can see the difference. My suspension does a lot more work than an unbraced truck. To me that means that if you don't have a brace the chassis is doing a lot of flexing and not letting the suspension do it's job. The brace also keeps the shock towers standing upright so you don't wind up with bent shock shafts.

The Mammoth is a fantastic truck but it needs to have a brace system installed to give it a "spine" . Lots of the folks that have problems with it are running it stock and bashing it hard. It's unfortunate that it has that weakness but it's a cheap and easy fix so why bother to wait until you bend towers and brake diff cases to put a brace on the truck.

In response to Pathogen's post. The diffs on the early trucks were not shimmed at the factory and were prone to blowing up under hard braking. XTM now shims the diffs so that problem has been reduced. You will occasionally hear a clicking in the diffs under hard braking but that happens with Maxx's and Savages and I even hear some complaints about it in the REVO already. The gears slip off eachother when you try to take a huge heavy truck from 40mph to 0mph quickly. The Mammoth doesn't weigh any more than a Savage it's just built to be bigger.

I owned both trucks, They were both great but my Mammoth was more exciting. The size of it was a bit of a turn off because I couldnt find any bodies to fit it properly but the performance made up for it!!!!!!!! Good choice!!!!!!

The mammoth is simply just to big for itsself. it twists and turns its self so much, even with proper bracing, that it tears up $25 diffs every time you go out running.

Have fun rebuilding
thats why as soon as you hear the diffs clicking you do a quick and relativly simple teardown and shim the diffs, and do you even OWN a mammoth???

If your talking about that new body from Pro-line. That thing looks real sweet. I had put the 14mm conversion on mine so i was able to use 40series wheels . Those wheels look more up to scale on the Mammoth!!!!!!!!!!
If i find some old pictures Ill post em!!!!

Here is a pick of my mammoth. Mostly stock. New shock towers, Nova Racing Head, and the 14mm conversion for some tires are the only mods. Just got the body, haven't even cut the holes in it yet. It is a MGT body, they fit perfect.

Plastic......Not too sexy...my friend.

oh and i guess that big ***** galvanized steel shock tower brace is? the mammoth looks like garbage! and how long has xtm been out there? the 24.7 engine is junk too, it cant touch an ofna .26 outlaw. when you dissed the savage you bashed the pillar of quality monster trucks. there aint a more durable truck out there!

Fastcrash:

You started the war...you came to a Mammoth Thread to flame XTM for no good reason.

#1 Go to www.savage-central.com and most of them will tell you the XTM .247 and .247 Pro are far better engines than the hard to tune and very on/off Piccos/Wasps.

#2 Have you ever seen a Savage do well in racing? Nope...not nationally, yet the Mammoth is placing usually in the top 5 of A Mains.

first off , that bake sale comment at the bottom of your reply is hilarious

anyway back to buisness. i havent seen a .247 thats ran good yet . thats not saying the guys with the screwdrivers knew what they were doing, but they seemed pretty eager to replace them when they saw the performance of my .26 outlaw. and your right the savage isnt a great race truck, but thats about its only weakness. imo the best racetrucks are t-maxxes, revos, and the assortment of truggies (probably including mammoth). and the reason i started this "war" is cause rayray blasted the savage, which is one of the best all around trucks out there, and you dont need to fabricate a big ass hunk of steel because hpi didnt overlook the fack that most of us love to bash, and dont always land shiny side up. and im sorry if you guys get pi$$ed, but the mammoth looks so been there done that. i bought the original t-maxx, cause there really wasnt nothin like it at the time. then the savage for the same reason and now the revo. i like when a company starts with a clean slate. those are my opinions, offerred, not forced, from my years of experience in this hobby.----------chris
