khelms,
yes you do need extra glow plugs. They wear out especially during break-in. I started off with just a quart of fuel but i needed more soon. Take your truck to your LHS and ask the people there for some help. They should be able to get your truck tuned right and setup right. If you don't have a LHS nearby ask around in some of these threads. The expert people will help you. You should buy tools that your truck needs. House-hold tools are most of the time too big. You should also buy spare parts because if you bash you will break something.

read your directions, carefully. Learn to tune it yourself. If you take it to your LHS ask if they have the time to "show" you how to properly tune it. If you take it there for them to tune it, you will be relying on them all the time.

give a person a fish they eat for a day, teach a person, they eat for a lifetime.

Stock up like 2 or 3 plugs, after a while you wont be changing them so often when you learn your trucks quirks.

I always purchase by the gallon. bulk is cheaper. Make sure you close it tight. I also like tower because they sell you gallons in 4 quarts which is cool because your only exposing a quart at a time when you open them.

also.. keep it clean. It not only looks better but the engine runs cooler when it's clean. Don't let it overheat by either doing the spit-test or buying a temp gun. The spit should boil in about 3 seconds if the truck is tuned right.. or the temperature should be about 240ΒΊ F.

I started out with a quart of nitro break-in-blend fuel but it's not really needed. Yes.. as said above, buying in bulk is the way to go. Somehow you're saving twice the money buying a gallon at my LHS.

Quart = like $11..
4 quarts in a Gallon = like $23

Don't be surprized if you burn up a glow plug even on the first tank. That's what mine did and I'm still going strong on my second almost thru a gallon of nitro.

Break-in is a pain in the arse. Run it really rich.. these first 6 tanks are crucial. You're engine will not want to start and stay running. Stick with it, hold half throttle to start it.. get thru the first two-three tanks then start leaning it out and it will start much easier.

The truck should emit quite a bit of smoke. It shouldn't sound perfecly smooth. It should sound just a little blubbery even after break-in and tuned properly.

Reading the instructions and asking the LHS questions is really the best thing to do.

I agree with youngspeed.

I know it is easier to buy things from Tower Hobbies and cheaper, but I always make it a point ot buy something from my LHS. What do I get in return, ADVICE. It is an inmeasuable resource that you should use.

On this site - many bash or write about their LHSs in bad words, but I bet they have all gotten sound advice from their LHS.

I just hope you got one by you.

When i first got my truck, i had trouble (everyone does) with starting the engine. First thing i did was go to my LHS. The owner there helped and showed me how to properly break-in and tune my engine. He gave advice and tips of how to start my engine. He even tells me when local events are going on so i can go and watch. If you do have a LHS find out if they have a website. Mine does, but it's under some development. When ever i want to buy a part for my truck, i first go to my LHS and see what he thinks. He'll tell me what is good and bad. If he doesn't have the part, he orders it for me and i give him the business. Just my 0.02$
