I installed the MIP CVD kit from Tower, and after running with them for about 40 min, I stripped either my idler or diff gear (I'm yet to disassemble) both of which are still stock. Am I just looking for more broken gears by installing the CVDs? The stock dog bone setup was seeing its age(starting to twist) which caused the upgrade. Would it be recommended to upgrade the tranny parts to a ball diff offered by traxxas [link=http://www.buytraxxas.com/product_info.php?cPath=4_717&products_id=1239]here[/link] and a metal idler if they make one??? Plz help
Thanks

no one makes a metal idle or diff gear for the rustler and i have mip cvds and have an OS .18 with a gallon through it and havent stripped a tranny gear yet (suprisingly) i dont know if the traxxas ball diff will matter because i used to only strip idle gears never the diff gear so you should be able to keep the stock diff, maybe your slipper clutch is too tight and needs to be loosened a little
im guessing the idle gear is stripped

Traxxas makes an aluminum idler and Delrin diff gear, actually. the one for the e-pede/rusty should fit.
might as well upgrade to the Pro Ball Diff while you have it torn apart, and install the aftermarket TRX topshaft.

not really. I know that a Fantom 15 powered rusty puts more abuse through the transmission of the drivetrain than the TRX 2.5, and the only traxxas truck i've SEEN tear up tranny parts on a regular basis is a VERY abused 9 turn/8 cell e-pede, which WILL stomp that Fantom 15 Rusty into the ground, and he's had no problems since he upgraded his trans to these parts:
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJG27&P=7 <ball diff

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJF38&P=M <delrin top gear
Sorry, I had a brainfart, it's the topgear that's delrin, not the diff gear. Traxxas also has a tougher diff gear for the gear diff, too, if you don't wanna drop $60 on the ball diff.

Thanks for the ideas.... I might try loosening the slipper a little next time. I would like to upgrade the tranny parts, but am finding it hard to cough up the 60 for a new diff considering I just spent 160 on parts, new body, fuel, tires and wheels over the past couple of weeks. Its hard to convince my wife I NEED these parts.
ThunderbirdJunkie -- can you provide a link to the ally idler and delrin diff gear...either I'm not for sure what I'm looking for or cannot find it
thanks again

just a couple of questions
when was the last time you re built the diff?
how often do you check to make sure it is not too lose?
diffs do not last for ever they need to be re built every now and again anyways
e-mo

i dont think you need to rebuild a rutler diff. because they use planet gears inside that gear they dont use a ball diff. ball diffs. need a rebuild every once in a while and tightening, the only reason you would need to rebuild the rustler differential is if you stripped the planet gears but i dont think thats too likely to happen

Well . . . I forgot to mention the diff was packed with HeavyDuty silicone grease so it would limit the slip. One side of the diff gears were shredded. Looks like I'll make a trip to Hobbytown this weekend. I'll think I'll stick with the stock diff to save some cash and not pack it with so much grease this time. [X(] I'll also pick up some extra idlers to keep around in case my CVD start eating them.
ANother quickie... How much run-out is acceptable in the spur gear? Its the original and a couple times it has nicked the air filter tube. It hasn't cut through it, only gave it a battle scar. I plan on picking some anyways. Just curous
Thanks for all the help

actually all those parts will work in the N rusty, the E and N rusty share the same gears.
said so in the product descriptions
