Default RE: Another RC10GT build thread

My RC10GT finally came today! my tower order with the 18 tz was supposed to get today too but it has showed up yet. I spent some time at the LHS today looking for parts I picked up an MIP 4 in 1 clutch, an 18t clutch bell, some RPM heavy duty rod ends and some screws.
After looking at the chassis closer I noticed that The motor mount I orderd for it won't work unless I drill some new holes in the chassis so I have been trying to find a motor mount that will work with the 18tz. The stock motor mount that I found looks like it will only work with the AE .15 and not with the tz. so what mounts have you guys used with you OS 18 Swaps? I need a mount that will work with a pull start. I found this one at new era that I will probably get if it will work have any of you used this one before? http://www.neweramodels.com/item.cgi...feu&part_id=12

here is a better pic of the car and some of the parts I picked up today. The CVEC pipe that I had was black so I painted it blue to match the car. I think it turned out pretty good. I'll have to change the pipe mount since the cvec pipe is shorter than the stock pipe.

The only pbs you will have is that the manifold will not go over the pull start ,it should pass very close to the back plate of the 18TZ so if you have a pull start there will be no more space for the manifold and even if you manage to put that engine with that manifold it will then not fit under the body .here is a pic of mine with the 18 TZ and a THS inline pipe .

here is the header pipe that I'm going to get. from everything that I have seen it will work with the pullstart on the tz. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXFBA0&P=0

I'm going to have my hobby shop order it for me they seem to be able to get stuff alot faster than if I was to make an order from tower.

I'm going to have them order the motor mount too along with a few RPM parts like my front bumper, receiver box and a set of 3 degree rear arm mounts

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXRB02&P=7

those of you that have the TZ in you GT's what are you running for a spur gear clutch bell combo? Robinson racing sells a 54T spur and assosiated sells a 24T CB. I hope that its not to tall for the TZ, but it should scream at top end with that combo! I think the spur that I have now is 64T and I have an 18T CB that I will probably use for break-in and then I'll experiment with the gearing after that.

Thanks for all your help

I just got back from my LHS after placing an order for several more parts that I need. I also picked up a Venom hump pack and a power switch. can someone post a pic or two of how the switch is supposed to be mounted please?
Thanks

Check out what I got in the mail today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I now have almost all of the parts to build this car, I'm still waiting for a few things from the LHS but they should be in tomarrow!
I got the rpm arms, proline crowd pleaser body, OS 18TZ, a couple decal sheets, and some small part like screws, body clips, ect. I can't believe how much pinch the TZ has. Its insane!!this is going to be fun!!

I was putting the flywheell and clutch assembly and the crank is a bit long. do I need to cut it shorter or is there some type of spacer that I need to get for it. I don't like the idea of cutting on a brand new engine. here are a couple pics showing what I'm talking about.
Thanks

Ok thanks, I don't like having to cut on a brand new engine but I guess I'll have to.

I haven't picked up the bearings yet, I have some more parts ordered from the LHS and they should be in to day I was going to get some bearings while I was there.

I started painting the body last night. this is my first body to paint and you can tell! lol. some of my masking tape wasn't down all the way so some of the paint got underneath it. I think it willl still look ok when I get it fininshed.

The prjects coming along pretty well. Thanks for all of your help so far!

Yeah I know what you mean but I still like working on my cars even if they don't turn out quite like I had hoped.

I have a couple more questions for you all. I have been putting on the new RPM arms and when I took off the whole front end the chassis looks a bit off to me. is it supposed toi be bent up that far?

Also do you know if RPM make a s replacement part that goes between the arm and the shock? I don't know what its called but here is a picture of the one I have.
Thanks

I just got back from my LHS and picked up the last few parts that I needed to get this thing together. I don't think there is anything else that I'm going to need now, but I sure I'll come up with something!
I got an RPM front bumper, RPM receiver box, RPM 3 degree rear suspension mounts, the motor mount, an HPI exhaust manifold which I'm hoping is going to work, a 23T clutch bell, a robinson racing 54T spur gear, and some e-clips and bearings. If all goes well break-in should start tonight or tomarrow![>:]

Well I have been working on the GT off and on all day today. I got most all of the new parts installed. I didn't get the engine mounted because I ran into a bit of a problem with the clutch bell assembly. I bought the wrong set of bearings for it and the 23T clutch bell I got is for an NTC3 or GT2 and won't fit on the RC10GT. I do have an 18t clutch bell that will fit once I get the right bearings for it tomarrow. I just hope one of the hobby shops has some instock. I'm itching to finish it and get it running! I finnished painting the body and I didn't do a very good job with it but I will be able to cover up some of the imperfections with some decals. here are some pics of what the car looks like now. if youlook at the pic in the post at the top of the page it doesn't even look like the same car!!
Enjoy!!

The engine is just setting there I don't have it mounted yet.

In my GT i have a 18 bell and a 62 spur gear and that is far more than enough ,any smal stone on the track can launch the car up in the air ,i have tried a 20 t bell but the MIP clutch burned with it and i now have a alloy home made clutch that will never slip .
Believe me ,a 18/62 combo will get you to speeds that might scare you with a GT

I'm not going to be racing it but I want to see how fast I can get it to go . I shooting for 60+ mph!!! I had a firestorm that I set up and got into the 50's with an 18CVR the gt is lighter and the tz has more power ad I have more gearing options too. right now I have a 54T spur in the car and an 18T clutch bell. but I am going to get a 24t clutch bell bell. you do bring up a point though about the clutch slipping if the gearing is too tall. I have an MIP clutch so we will see how it holds up. this will be a trial and error proscess to get the best gearing setup that I want .

Here is the finished product! and here is the body I painted for it. the paint job isn't very good but its the first one I've done. some of the masking tape peeled up just enpugh for some paint to get underneath it. I still need to cut out a space for the engine and pipe too.

got the engine mounted and everything hooked up. I still need to set up the front wheel alignment too. I started on the break-in but only got 3 tanks of fuel through it so far. I hpoe to finish break-in tomarrow. I need to get a new air filter and a fuel filter for it. I though OS engines cane with an air filter in the box but this one didn't. The only air filters I have for it are old nasty looking ones. but they work.

here are some pics with the body on. I think it looks pretty good. Like I said earlier I don't have it all cut out yet so the pipe is just setting on top of everything inside the car and my homemade throttle linkage is pushing out the side of the body.

That is what i had as experience ,18/62 get's the car to speed's that can make it fly if there is anything or imperfect ground ,and for the mip clutch you will have to set in the locking position without any drag and the weight's in so that it locks up with a minimum slip ,but even that way it will slip if you gear it to high (believe me i have tried ).Imagine that mine on the track at the end of our straight at full speed pull's wheelies and the only way for me to prevent that is to get only 70% throttle from the radio even 60% would be enough .
