Yeah, I'd like to hear what the guys running this motor think of it. Hard to believe they can improve on the 175. Mine's been the most reliable and pleasurable YS motor I've ever run.

Comparable power from the 160 to the 170, the pump reference has been removed, have not dissasemble the pump yet, as there is no need to. The engine is still identical to the 175 but the pump reference hose, the ignition is half the size, and it seems to have an output for a tachometer, but I have no instructions. It should go well with a 21, 20.5 x 10 is ok but not enough prop.

What are the preferred propellers for the 175 (and now 185)? It seems that APC is still the preferred propeller, however based on a conversation I had with Mike Harrison at the Nats this year, the big drawback on the APC is weight. Are there any Falcon or Mejzlik propellers that will provide enough performance without the weight penalty? I'd love to see a four-bladed prop appropriately sized for the larger YSs (bonus points if it's carbon fiber) as I always preferred the feeling of the airplane with a four-blade prop, over several designs and from the 140 to the 170.

Might be worth borrowing a carbon prop to see how you find them rather than shelling out a lot of money for them just to be dissapointed?

I ran the 21x10 all summer. I really liked the pace (6300rpm) all around for the simpler maneuvers in the masters class. Doubt fai would like it. Been trying the 20.5x10 lately and am going to switch to it as it pulls over the top better then the 21 and pace seems to be about the same. A 21x10 at 6300 is getting close to electric numbers, just doesn't quite have the torque of electric. 185 may be perfect for it.
Weights of the apc's are at 6.1oz for the 20.5 and 21 x 10. 20x10 is 6.5oz, it's a narrower blade but a lot bigger hub.

I have a more basic question. Are there any distinct advantages between the YS175 over the YS170? I am thinking about getting a 175 but maybe a 170 is just good enough for the FAI schedule. I currently use a 170 and am very happy with it and thought about getting a second one.
The 170 has not been available commercially for quite a while now. Of course, you can still get used ones.
The main advantages between the two are better mid range torque, able to swing a 20.5x10 PN prop with authority for better transition, enabling a slower down line & more constant speed.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the 170, it has enough power to pull any of the designs out there. However, if you're flying those newer design with the more forward larger canopy/ taller fuse type or the bipes, the 175 will definitely gives you an advantage. Especially, the power hungry F-15.

I finally had to give up on my 170dz.....the only thing that didnt break was the moving parts.
Mainly....the pump was/is a giant problem.....I might like to try the Sport version though....got lotsa fuel left.

I'm still using a 170 that is about four, maybe even five years old. It is only now just starting to develop some problems. The injector came out of the cylinder head and broke off the hypodermic needle on Sunday. The main bearing is also shot to bits. Apart from that, no problems and this will be its first service.
Would love to try the 185

There's a 21 x 10 std blade width that should work super on the 185. Problem is the weight at around 200 grams. What it probably needs is a 3 bladed woodie at around 19x10. But you;d have to make your own....have not found a commercially available product and I've looked quite a bit

YS repaired my 160's under warranty well after the warranty period had expired.
