Well, still sanding on the fuse to finish off fillets and such....
Also got the nose ring mounted...mounted the OS to the budd mount with the nose ring on the engine, then carefully drilled through the nose former and marked the hole locations on the nose ring tabs. I then made spacers to take up the distance between the nose former and the nose ring. I made these using a hard piece of 3/8" balsa, sandwiched on each side with 1/16" aircraft ply. I epoxied these in place and drilled through. This allows me to sink the 4-40 heads into the nose former a bit without pulling through, since they will run into a layer of 1/16" aircraft ply. I drilled out the marks I made on the nose ring and installed 4-40 blind nuts on the backside (added 1/8" lite ply for thickness for the blind nuts). I mounted everything once again and the motor position/thrust looks really good.

It's been a while, but John's new Insight is finished, and as of today, has flown. The final weight.....9lbs. 15oz....fully custom painted by Mr. Jim Sheffield. Power is OS160fx, standard muffler, perry pump.
I took a few pics and John asked that I post them for him. I will let John reply/post his own thoughts here about the plane.

The pics do not do the plane justice. You have to see it in the light to get the metallic effects. The scaled effect in the wings(best shown in the pic of the tail feathers) goes through the yellow and truly is a work of art. The in air effect is a bright orange and is VERY visible. The faded red into yellow on the nose is also a thing of beauty. The bottom is a white with a blue that I want my next car to have for color. The plane flies smooth as glass and has plenty of power. Rolls are crisp and I do think this plane may help me look better than I really am! In a word....SWEET!! I felt more comfortable with it after two short flight than any other plane I have owned. I just wish tomorrow was Friday!!!!! Thanks to every one who contributed to the plane coming out so well. Mark of course and Jim with the artists touch. Richard and Chuck throwing in and making sure we got her in the air this weekend as well. Cant tell ya'll how good it all feels!!!!

John, all i did was reload mark with beer....What a great weekend we had. 6 Insights at the same field, 3 flew, ohers had to leave early. thank god we don't drink at the field or i think that we surely would have tried some formation flying!!!
Finally getting my ship dialed in, i am going to move cg back about 1/4 in, i am hoping to help inverted flight slightly and not mess with anything else. We will see.
So... what to work on next.......

Hey guys,
Man, my little old airplane is going to feel like a step child on the flying field
surrounded by a flock of Insights and Genesis'. Y'all can't gang up on the
little guys now !! I think I counted 10 Genesis being built and almost that many
Insights. Wow !!
Hopefully Tuan will have his electric ship ready soon so I will have some
company.

Is the Insight available in an all wood version? The picture at the start of this thread shows a plane with a built up wing. Or what options are available?

The Insight that most everyone is familiar with (version 4 - see first image) was not designed or ever built with an all built up structure. I have plans...and I believe a set or two of cores (in the attic) for this plane.
There was a version 1 Insight a couple years earlier, which was completely built up (see second image, etc.). Those plans are out on the internet somewhere for free. I can email them to anyone that wants them too.

I cant find any wing adjusters so i guess i will have to give somehow a fixed incidence!!
By the way Hi!!
My name is Thanos!!
I am from Greece and i started building a Insight V2!
I got the plans from a site and now here i am!!!
I see you guyes arround here are PROs!!
Your work is excellent and your colour schemes are also very beautifull!

Pappy,
Glad to hear you are building an Insight!
When building the fuse, you will want to keep the fusebox flat and straight on the worktable. When this box is built and sheeted on top and bottom, you can carefully glue in the stab (please see post #34 on page 2 of this thread). Set the stab at -0.5° incidence.
For the wing, it is really important to have a set of adjusters to fine tune the wing position. The wing incidence on my Insight was +0.75° .
In post #49 and #50, you can see the process I used to insert a wing tube sleeve through the fuselage. The wing cores were carefully drilled (home made jig) with a sharpened aluminum 7/8" wing tube. The very first Insight had built up wings which had oversize wing tube holes in each rib. A balsa donut was made to fit tight on the wing tube sleeve at each rib location. The wings were setup straight and level with the fuse, wing tube, and socket, then these balsa donuts were glued in place (see attached image).
I will be glad to answer your questions as often as I can.
Good luck!
Mark

Thanks very much Mark!!
I guess it's going to be the first Greek attempt to build an insight!!!
I am studying since almost 2 months all your post and i passed many afternoons
looking your pictures!!!
The important think for me i guess is first to build the model in the mind!!!
once i learn how its going to be then i can go on!!!
i send you some pictures and links of my work!!

This is a link from our greek forum!!!
I recently had an accident with a QUEST50 (broke the Fuselage) so i had to build one from scratch!!
I picked up the pieces from the scene of crime(!) and re builded it piece by piece and then devided in pieces as from company and then copied them on wood!!!
here are the results

I had a OS160Fx in mine at first but she got a little tired and I switched to a 140RX and now she climbs like a homesick angel!! Very nuetral plane that doesnt seem to need as much mixing as most others. Good luck with yours whichever engine you use!!!

Pappy,
I would say it will be marginal. Sorry to give you the bad news. In my opinion, to get good performance (good, not FAI) with the gas 26 you will need a plane that weighs 10.0 lbs. or less. To build a 2meter plane with a 26 gasser that light will be very, very difficult. There is room however in the nose for the engine. Some time ago I did a sketch of a zdz 40 in the nose...see image.
On a good note, my very first Insight is now living out its golden years as a sport flyer with a zenoah 26cc and the owner is very happy. He asked me to fly it and I was able to do the AMA sportsman sequence (AMA 401), but not much more.
Good luck,
Mark

Thanks MArk!!!
Everytime he sees the plane (he can't speak yet but he can communicate) he alway does ....VUUUUUUM!!!VUUUUUMM!
I ended up with the solution of an OSMAX 120AX engine!!!
Its 3.1hp so i guess its more than enough for the model!!!
