Excelleron 90 - discontinued?

I just went to the support website listed in the owner's manual looking for updates or tech notices before I get started on the assembly. The response was that the Excelleron 90 had been discontinued but they knew of no available updates.
Is this so? After all the rave reviews the model is discontinued?

It would figure as I just received Excelleron 90. Web site still lists it though. http://www.globalhobby.com/public/gallery/127565.asp
The YS110 is in and I am installing the radio. I also am using the Icepoint canopy to get a little more side area and landing gear to give a little more ground clearance. I like the kit but every piece of covering needed to be resealed, no biggie but time consuming.

You really don't need the extra side area but the Icepoint canopy will definatley look good. You will be impressed with the knife edge flight.
Resealing the covering is an ongiong process. Too many edges to lift. If I did another one I'd get some trim solvent and go over all edges.

I set both the stock canopy and the Icepoint canopy on the model and the Icepoint canopy looks MUCH better. It is longer and makes the fuse lines flow better. Now if I could just get some time to actually finish the model..........................

I agree with you. I like the icepoint canopy better also. I was just bragging on the flying characteristics of the plane

Story of my life. Had two hours to work on the model last night........ and the effin' power went off. I did manage to get the Icepoint landing gear on and drilled the hole for the throttle pushrod (battery powered drill <g>

What size tires (wheels?) are you going to use? The 2" soft foam ones in the kit will last about one day at my field. The hardware for mounting the wheels and pants to the stock gear is like none I've ever seen before. It doesn't look like the axles are long enough to use a larger diameter tire. As the diameter increases the width of the wheel also increases and then you run out of axle length. The gear is pretty slender there at the end so drilling the hole out to use a dubro axle may not leave enough material for strength. The Icepoint landing gear that is being used as a replacement, what is it made of and how much does it cost? Is it big enough to drill out to accept an axle? Are you using the stock pants? They seem small to me. I've got larger ones on some .40 size planes. Also, they are drilled out to work with the weird Excelleron axles so would require mods to adapt to other axles.

My field will accept the small tires without problem so I plan on using them. The wheel pants will accept a much larger tire than those provided so that isn't a problem. The Icepoint gear is composite and there is a bit more area where the axle goes through so I think it wouldn't be a problem to use different longer axles and larger tires.

I have started installng the pull/pull elevator stuff. I am not crazy about the included hardware and used some MK hardware I had instead. I think the other included stuff would work if I took the time to offset the servo arm pickoff points to match but decided that was too much work.

To be honest, probably nothing is wrong with the kit parts, but they looked "flimsey" to me and I have used the MK ones for years with good success. Since I had the MK ones, I used them.

I am also working on the elevator pull-pull set up, and I am going to use the stock hardware, but instead of the stock control arm, I will be using the DuBro control horn arm as a replacement (DuBro# 878 or Tower Hobbies stock # LXKLV3). With this longer arm, I am able to have the connecting point lined up with the hinge line, and I hope this combination will hold up well.

The stock hardware is WAY too flimsy. I almost lost the plane after one of the aileron horn's treaded post broke off even at the plastic base and the resulting flutter sounded like a military drum roll...
I replaced EVERYTHING with Du-Bro HD the very next day.

I've been using them for a couple of months. I really like the Hatori muffler but they really
need a better mounting method.
The stock S shaped spring things were a bolt in and easy installation but after three sets broke
and almost losing the muffler I installed a Dave Brown pipe mount. Very nice and clean installation
but broke on the third flight. I am now using the Central Hobbies pipe mount and so far so good.
The problem is keeping the heat from the pipe away from the mount. With the Central mount I am
using now I first wrapped the pipe with a couple of layers of teflon tape, then a couple of layers of
the silver tape A/C -Heating contractors use on heating ducts then the muffler is held on with a zip
tie strap. So far it's working OK.

Thank you for the information about the pipe mount. I am not sure what is the Central Hobbies mount looks like, and can't seems to find a link in their site. I do, however, have a pipe mount that made out of white nylon that uses cable tie to secure the pipe, and I wonder if this is what Central carries. By the way, did you hard mount yours or soft?

I started doing the aileron linkages last night and IMHO the 2mm rods are not strong enough to take the flight loads I'm planning on for this model so I installed 440 rods and the MK horns. It stiffened up the whole assembly quite a bit. I am a little worried about the pull/pull elevator linkage even though I used the MK horns. Everyone I have spoken to says not to worry but I have an uneasy feeling about it. I guess I'll know if/when it breaks.

has a rubber stud mount that allows some movement. I have the Central mount screwed on
with a piece of sillicone under it so it's kinda semi-soft. If I could mount it the way I would prefer
it would hang down way too much so it's kind of a compromise but it's working OK for now. Just
don't pull the zip-tie too tight because the muffler needs to move.

In terms of isolating the heat, I am thinking to try some heat-shirnk tubing that I have available, but if that doesn't work, I also have some left over high-temp silicon sheets that I can use. Hopefully this is going to hold up so I can use this header-muffler combo - I really like the look.

The Hatori muffler-header combo makes the YS 1.10 sound real good, seems to have added
a little power too. The mount you have sounds just like the one I'm using. The only modification
I did was to make a small releif in the wing belly pan and enlarge the bottom opening in the cowl
to clear the muffler, pretty easy. The down pointed stinger keeps the airplane clean too.

it for over a year and have had no problems and lately I have been practicing the advanced pattern
with the positive and negative snaps and still no problems.
