RE: Venus II
The only weak spot on the venus is in the fuse just behind the wing trailing edge as maynard said.
I have built 4 venuses and found i could reinforce the fuse just behind the wing from the INSIDE of the fuse using forcepts, or hemostats and a little patience.
I have templates for doing just that. This weak spot only affected landings.
Once that is fixed there are no weak spots.
As far as flight, you can do anyting to this model and it will stay intact. I have a couple thousand flights on Venues and have done every concevable manuver with intensity.
I have an OS 120 AX on the Venus which is a very powerful motor for this plane. Still no problems.

RE: Venus II
Well after two years of searching and searching my good friend CJ found me a bran new in the box Venus II in Henderson NC http://www.hendersonvillehobbyhouse.com/. After a few days of waiting the box showed up at my front door unhurt and the plane contents inside the box was unhurt and in excellent condition. I just wish i could find a way when the plane was built from the factory so i can date the inside when it was made and when i assembled it and flown it. Mine is powered with a Saito 1.15 and i added no extra weight what so ever i just moved the battery from the former that was next to the tank to more closer to the throttle servo and the servos are in the tail. I may have to get me a cowling from Tower and get me a OS 120ax just to see what the hype is all about with that motor and a pitts muffler so if i get a wild hair I can change motors lol. But needless to say i am very pleased with the power and handling with the plane and motor combo that i currently have. I now have two of the venus 40's one built as it comes out of the box the other 40 size i retrofitted it with pneumatic retracts and OS 50 sx power. One big venus family!

If you want to use an OS120AX, look at my MAC muffler setup. This fits the cowling much better than a pitts. I used an OS exhaust extension then sawed it in half to get the muffler in the right place. I flat filed the edge and bought the correct length screws. Check the photos. I have been running that engine in the Venus for 2 years with no problems. I did move the tank back to the CG and installed a Perry pump. This package runs flawlessly and the power is awesome. I replaced that plastic tube in the photo with an aluminum angled tube tha MAC sells to fit that muffler.

RE: Venus II
Well after working all winter recovering my Venus I am getting close to being done, and I was ready to be done a long time ago. It turned really well, I did the exact scheme I posted earlier minus the tail feather colors. I may just leave it white. Tired of it. I used Serif drawing program. Starting first with a picture of the pieces then drawing an overlay over the top. It works great on the flat surfaces like the main wing. A 3d rendering of the fuse would have been better. It took many draws, tile prints, and trial fits to get the 3 colors around the fuse. A real pain in the .....I am curious how it's done at the factory. I post some Pics soon.

Tele,
That is a very nice looking Venus. It makes you wonder why Great Planes does not continue tweaking their designs after they have been in production to make them look more current. It would seem to me that minor changes such as these would allow them to keep producing the plane without having to introduce a completely new design as a replacement (which as far as I know, they have not done...).
Have you decided what contests you will attend this year? I am thinking that I might get a chance to see the plane in person.

The New Venus is almost finished.
The New Venus is almost finished.
It looks like the Jekyl series of models........ I think it will fly better than the original if not too much weight was added

I don't have time right now to take the airplane apart for photos. The muffler is MAC #6990 and Tower LXSXF2. The extension was ordered from a local HS and is OS # E5020. I hack sawed it in half and filed the sawn edge smooth. It does not leak. You also need 2 Dubro allen screws for the correct thread of the muffler and a length for the new extension. Now assemble the engine with the mounted muffler and the engine mount. Hold that assembly on the firewall and center the muffler in the exhaust opening on the airplane. Mark and drill your mounting holes. The cylinder comes out a bit below horisontal. I am including three photos thst should help. The firewall photo also shows the pump I installed when I moved the tank to the CG. This cured the constantly changing elevator trim problem. Good luck. I should also mention that I used the exhaust deflector that MAC makes for their mufflers. This is a short curved tube that fits over the end of the muffler and is secured in place by a worm gear hose clamp.

RE: Venus II
Well I finally finished my Venus and got it flight worthy. Still needs a Venus III logo on the side of the fuse. With the canopy forward their is little coupling during knife edge. The Syssa wasn't pulling like it was last year thou it was 95 out today and really humid. But plenty of pull for sportsman practice. Canopy forward added some weight to the nose. I am running a A123 right over the cg and their is plenty of room to move the battery back. The Saito 125 was a better engine for this plane. They seems to have the same power as the Syssa with more weight so verticals are not as strong. Fun to fly and much less work on the stick than my Extra of course.

RE: Venus II
Has anyone fly both glow and electric the venus ii ?
I am going to convert mine in 6s electric and i want to know if it is worth.. Is there a big improvement with the larger prop (17 or 18 inches) in the electric setup?
thanj you,
john

RE: Venus II
The bigger prop is used to take advantage of the electric motor's power band. They are good at making torque, and optimal efficiency is turning a large prop at a lower rate.
I converted a 1.20 Yak from glow to electric. It had a 1.20 2-stroke with 16x8, and for awhile a 1.10 YS 4-stroke with 16x6. Performance with electric is different, kind of a cross between the two. I am now running an 18x12. I think the extra diameter actually hurts performance of the plane, since the spiraling 'disc' of air flowing over the control surfaces is now larger and moving slower.
I think a 17" prop is probably the best compromise for the Venus - a 17x10 would be nice I think.

2) e-flight 60 with apc 17x10 on 6s 4000mah
3) os5025-375 with apc 18x10 on 6s 4000mah
Any reccomendetions ?
thanks you,

RE: Venus II
I love my electric Venus2 I started out with 5 cell and now I have a 5000 6 cell that made a big difference. I used the Rimfire 120 and a 80 amp castle esc. I have many flights on it and I am about to change to carbon landing gear. I have had it both ways with the OS 120 and I have had enough of snot rockets although I had many flights before changing. Electric is sweet.
