Black Magic VF3 Build Thread

Hey Mike,.....
Yeah I understand that. The integrated 2 roll half loop insn't the problem with servo power,if I don't "lolly Gag" through it. That was also a plane issue with the Partner, certially not all Partners, just mine. The loop w/the fulls reversed is one that has been kill'in me, especially on a real windy day. And the Knife edge loop I could use more on the front side as the absence of the roll helps, but struggles through the first half a bit for sure.
As you know Mike, pattern is a different enviornment for me with only about 3 years now. I am still learning what to use for the FAI set up all the way around. I have been running all high speed, high torque analog servos in my pattern planes except on rudder as of recent. I did that to consume less battery power and extend my number of flights.
I have discovered recently how much that was hurting me not running digitals all the way around by flying other planes and set ups. Heck,....I figured 131oz's was fine years ago flying 40% Carden Caps with them, so it should be fine on these planes,...Not The Case! It works, don't get me wrong,...not a competative set up as you know. The hobby/sport evolved and I had a comfort zone I was stuck in,..call it pilot "stuperstitions" if it was working without issues,..why change to something different and stray outside the comfort zone?
Thats' why I am very thankful for those guys that have let me fly their stuff as of late,....It's been very educational for me to experience the differtence with digitals, 2.4, newer designs and even electric.
Anyway,...I hope to test fly tomorrow and tweek for friday and tweek a bit more on friday. Tech-Aero DR2 will not be in till next week sometime. Going to run the WC2 on 72 until I play with the 14MZ more just for this contest.
Larry,.. I saw that gear,..it looks good. You can also order the Delro carbon gear from Chris Moon. They are a bit short for electrics, but fine for the 18 inch props and they look good.

Ok,............I'm Finished!
Mike,........man what a machine dude!!!!!!! Snuck out and got two flights in just a bit ago,....plane was very happy! Some very minor tweeking here and there,...Ummm,... thats' a sweet machine! It was like two totally differnt people were flying it,....just amayzed how hard I was over working myself with "my" Partner.
The plane weight is exactly 10 lbs ready to fly minus fuel,....Mike said it would be,..he knows his plane! I have some room to play with now,...need a half pound more in it!
A shout out to those that assisted, guided and provide knowledge throughout the assembly process. Mike Hester, Dean Funk, The Odoms (Chris for letting fly the Monster and Larry for his wisdom), and the Wingo's for just taking the time to chat with me about the plane while in Florida and Archie Stafford for his guidance on the setup. Thanks Guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Notes: My plane came out nose heavy with Monokote,....my reciever and 1250 Lipo and regulator are behind the tank.

I told you so.
LOL
Anyway you're welcome and very cool.
Just a head's up: if I'm a little hard to get in touch with over the next week, I have a bum finger and I'm under the gun in the shop. if it's important just leave a message and I'll get back with ya.

Well after a little phone conversation with Bill I would officially say he's whipped. I would have to think that he's got him a 55 gallon drum of kool-aid and he's working on it now. Bill glad you got it done and we all knew you would love it. Now start burning that fuel and get ready for the NATS.
Great job
Larry

Mike I know is kind of swamped, so I'll answer this one for him....
He will be gone that week for the NATS. I'll be down there next week and wee'll be gone from the 11th through the 18th. He will probably be around on the 19th though.
You can't go wrong with this plane,

For sportsman you could get through it with that, but it would be marginal. If you can build very light. The plane is very draggy. It definitely needs a 1.60 or above for anything else. If you want to keep costs down you can fly it with an OS 1.60 also and be competitive for other classes.

I saw a lightly used YS 1.60 for sale, as well as a compatible pipe, on the pattern list recently. I would think that would work well. If you're not on that list maybe someone can find that info (I'm not at my home computer).

The Ultra Sport is MUCH less draggy than this plane. That is one of the reasons this plane performs so well. The 1.4 will fly it, but anything above Sportsman and it will be hurting. There is a difference in flying it, and flying it well.
Just my opinion after flying this plane for more than 2 years and putting more flights than anyone on this design. I have flown them with a 1.60DZ and have flown others with OS 1.60's on them. That is the minimum I would put on this plane,

Update time,...contest results.
I now have 12 flights on the plane and WOW,..what a great machine!!!!! No practice in about a month and 2 flights on it Thursday before the contest. I actually dialed it in fairly close after one flight Friday night and flew it again Saturady morning to check the changes. I won the first round and pulled a 998 in the second,....The plane and I were one of the topics of discussion throughout the weekend
. I finially had the chance to showcase some of the skills and ability that was being supressed by flying used up old crap,...thanks a million times over Mike.
I love the plane and would like to find another one framed up, cmoore has one posted I see.
Best Regards,
Bill Holsten

Does anyone have a photo of the bottom of Mark Attwood's(I think that's the owner) model? Photo of the model below..
I love the colour scheme and would like to duplicate it but in bright orange instead of yellow.
Cheers
Jason.

Do you know if it's a painted finish or film?
Presently going through formica making core templates. Feels good to finally start my VF3E.
