A question about frequency use...
Assuming I use a separate power circuit for the CDI, do these systems increase chance of glitch and detrimental radio noise? I am "still" flying on 50Mhz JR PCM.
In the past, running ignition required a long list of "roll-your-eyes" precautions to avoid radio interference. Is the CDI engineered to be more of a "drop-in" replacement, or is this an issue at all?

I ran the motor today. Used 8% oil and 15% Nitro. Used an 18x10 prop and a 580cc Tettra tank. I ran at a fast idle (between 2700 and 3000 RPM) for three runs of 12-14 mins each. Not very noisy either. I used a Hatori header and 821 mufffler.
You're right: it runs like a dream; super smooth, incredible transition and little or no vibration. The low oil does not seem to bother it either.
WIth 8% oil, there still seemed to be some visible smoke. Could this be because the engine is brand new? I'm thinking of going down to 5% oil.
The needle was at 1 3/4 turns, which seemed to be a little rich, though the motor did not get bogged down even at a 1400 RPM idle.
Question: are there any specific run-in instructions? How much more do I have to run it at a low idle before I set the high-speed? Any advise is much appreciated.

Like I said, I've got 35 flights on the motor so far, and no issues. It's been a dream. It's the cleanest, smoothest running motor I've ever had.
I have been lazy and have not tached the motor, but I'm running Coolpower 20% heli in it right now, and it will swing a 19x11 with no trouble so far.

As far as I know, this motor isn't much different from any other YS in terms of breaking in. The only thing different is the CDI box, so I would just follow your normal break-in procedure for a YS. As far as I know the parts that are impacted by break in procedures are the same in the CDI as are in the DZ.
Regarding smoke, if your motor is new, it likely has oil that it's burning out from the factory. The smoke will not go away completely, from what I've seen with running low oil content fuel and I doubt you'll notice it much when it's in the air.
I'm not sure where your needle will end up at, but from what I've seen and the conversations that I've had with Richard, it will sound almost like it's missing when it's rich. The richer you are, the more of that you'll hear, but the motor shouldn't die. I've not tested that theory by getting the needle way out of where it should be, but I think you can get it out a good ways before it will start acting funny. The motor also doesn't change pitch too much around peak, and I do know that if you get it too lean on the high end, it won't like it, and if you're in the air and pull up, the motor will sag and die. If if it's a new motor, you'll end up running it rich anyway and start sneaking in on the needle a little at a time. I would leave it a few clicks rich of peak when you finally get it set and the motor is broken in fully.

Thanks for the Update, Ryan. I'll keep it rich for a while. Got to complete the model (QQ Yak 73") now and start flying.
Most people seem to be running the 19x11 prop on this engine. I'm thinking of using a 20x8 since I'm using lower than normal Nitro (15%). Have you tached the motor yet on different props? I understand you're running 20% so the numbers should not be that different. I'll post numbers once I tach my motor.

Just to inform you all about the design of the "Low Smoke" Crankshaft and Cam Followers for the 170cdi I have attached some pictures here.
As you can see the Crankshaft differs from the "new-old" design of the ordinary DZ170.

In your first picture, is the hole in the end of the crank pin plugged, or is that an optical illusion?
In my newest 1.70, I appear to have the new crankshaft with the small hole in the end of the crankpin, but the old, non-grooved followers. They must have been making running changes in the production line.

The Con Rod is being lubricated thru the Crankcase (you can see the hole on the second picture).

I'm pretty sure that there are some internal parts that are shared with these motors. Obviously not all of them as they are different motors, but even the heads are interchangeable with some motors (I know the 1.40DZ and 1.60DZ are). That's sort of like complaining that there aren't shared parts between the OS 1.40 RX and 1.60FX.
Atul, I have not had a chance to tach the motor to see what it's turning with a 19x11, but will as soon as I can. The weather has been sort of bad around here lately. I hope to fly by the weekend, however.

Ryan, I think you may have misunderstood the point I was trying to make with Jon. If I may clarify my above statement, "I've never seen any two of the same SIZE YS motors_ie, 140's, 160's or 170's that have/use the same internal parts." I was not implying the parts were shared by the different size YS motors. So let's not confuse the issue by trying to say an OS 140 RX shares parts with an OS 160 FX! I know the difference in the two OS engines, do you? Regards____TNWalker

I do understand the difference, thus the analogy. Of course a 1.40FZ won't be identical internally to a 1.40DZ, but these motors do share a lot of parts. I can back this up by invoices for repairs to YSs that I've sent in. Some of the motors, you aren't comparing apples to apples, which is why I brought the OS's into the equation.

I've got three YS110FZ engines and all three seem to have small differences in intenral and external components, whether it is a different con-rod, crankshaft, regulator, and even the crankcase..
...Same with trhe YS160DZ's I have seen two taken apart side -by side and the found them with different fuel pump components....In no way is it a complaint, I don't have a problem with it, but it is reality...

My CDI has just arrived, I'm very excited to install it to my Aries. Can I use 3 amps BEC for ignition systems? Also Richard sent me low oil crankshaft and low oil cam follower. Any ideas which side shall I install the cam follower intake or exhaust, coz he sent me only one piece. Thanks.

I see now, thanks Richard. I had not really noticed that when I've taken my motors apart. My two 1.60's were vastly different, one was a prototype from 2003, and the other was a regular production model from 2006 or so, so naturally I noticed some differences there, but that's about it. I haven't had that many of the same motor at once to be able to make a comparison. I've got two 1.40DZ's here that I could probably check, but I don't really see the need to as I understand the point being made now.

That has been something YS has done for years. Even in the 90's with the 1.20 series of engines things changed from one batch to another. Not necessarily a bad thing, but they are constantly changing the engines. Even with the low oil version. There is nothing marked about them being low oil until you pull the back plate and find it out. One of my 1.70's was low oil. The other wasnt.

I just got mine and already installed. I m using one pack of Batt off my RX 2300 MA Li-po and Jacco regulator 5.5V. and I have some question on its performance, please help...
1. I m using futaba 2.4G. Will the Ignition disturb my rx and servos?
2. Does the 2300ma have enough capacity to run both RX, Servos (all digital), and my CDI? And how many MA it would draw per flight?
Thanks to everybody in advance, I’m really stuck here.
