They always have in the past and I'm sure they will continue to do so. It is competition and people will take full advantage of the rules. Right now planes can be built under 11lbs, some even under 10, and that includes electrics. Getting a cheap ARF is going to be tough, but I'm sure someone will step up, but regardless, even the other stuff isn't that expensive compared to other disciplines.

That's a glow powered model that comes with no colors on it at about $2K. And has a much smaller fuse then most other top line models. And produces no where near enough airframes per year.
This particular one was 9 lb, 5 1/2 oz when brand new in 2006 and powered with an OS 140RX. Now, with a 170DX, a 24 oz tank and a 2 oz surge tank, dual 850 mAh batteries & regulators and a new paint job, it still easily makes weight. Integrals have a similar fuselage construction and are among the larger fuselage volumes available, and the weight difference between the Prestige and Integral fuselage is minimal. Major difference in the two models is the landing gear system and stock wings & tail. With more attention to detail, any Integral or similar would have no issue making weight. I've got a pair of Xigris fuselages that are a little bigger than the Integral and they are extremely light as well. Throw away the stock firewall and make a CF/balsa firewall replacement, and throw away the conventional landing gear mount system and no one should have any issue making weight with the Xigris either. You need to demand more of the manufacturers. I've said it before - someone should just look at how Wistmodel does their landing gear and balsa/glass/CF laminations and just start doing that. You would be pleased with the results.

There is a picture on page 15 of the August Model Aviation in the "Worth a Closer Look" section. Bottom left corner. Looks good. Not a 2-meter plane, span is 62 inches.

It looks pretty cool.
Regarding the Defiant, going the kit route opens up a lot of options, but you are in for a lot of work!!! I haven't seen one of these fly but I think they are/were popular in the midwest.
Seriously, if you are at all interested in making a go of it then get the best thing you can fit into your budget. You already have the motor, ESC, charger and probably packs so you are half way there. Try posting a message on the NSRCA mail list stating what you are looking for. Or, let one of us know and we can post a request for you. If you aren't opposed to doing some work, I think there are a couple banged up machines floating around that people might want to unload....

And making a plane light doesn't cause the price to go up as well?
.
I saw one guys plane at the Nats this year get all screwed up because of the weight rule. . .
.
The weight rule needs to be put in the same trash bin as the ''Sportsman fly with retracts DOWN'' rule was put in, but how many years did that take?
.
No wonder ARF manufacturers won't touch 2M pattern. Like someone above said, one post on RCU or RCG that you can't make weight and now they're stuck with a container full of kits. . .

Very true...
Didn't Flinton go bankrupt because of that issue?

the 2M pattern plane will be comming from Ef...
So we will see how that turns out...
I am going to buy one when they do.
Or the Vanquish...
I don't really like the Composite planes all that much though....
Real PITA when trying to do patches...

I have a Saito 125 that is itching to go into pattern plane. Came across this one from Nitro planes. Nitro has several planes for us pattern newbies (wanna bees). Look around the site. There are several planes that look good and they are certainly priced well.

Has anyone seen this fly? Or have any comments on it? Good enough for a beginner?
Thx, Bob

A good friend at our field built one and powered it with an OS120AX with pump and stock muffler. He is not a pattern flyer but my son is and John asked Michael to give it a fly. John is not into computer radios and still uses y hanesses an everything. Plane flew extremly well! No mixes! Lucky maybe ,but my son (not easily impressd) was amazed! John, builder of the Leo, loves to see a slow roll and every time Michael flys he has to do one for him. 1000 ft slow roll, Beauliful! Knife edge was good both ways. Again, lucky maybe, but from what we saw it is a great airplane especially for the price. Be aware it has a one piece wing and a pipe might be a little bit tricky.
Two thumbs up from myself and Michael!
Good luck!

Mith,
I am pretty new to this stuff also but in the last month and half I was around a lot of different pattern airplanes and had a chance to fly an assortment of them. In the two weeks that I spent at his house in Utah we built three different pattern airplanes and went flying every night. While I was there we built and flew a Miss Wind 50, Sebart Wind S pro 2m, and a CA models Visa. We also flew the CA models envision which Andrew had just finished and his NATS airplanes, the krill Spark.
I have to say I liked how all of them flew but if I had my choice it would probably be the Spark first because of the look and presentation when it flies. The CA models airplanes were really nice, went together well, and it was pretty impressive how many Visa's, Passports and Envisions flew at the NATS. I think the 2m Wind was a great flying airplane and probably will see about getting one in the near future since it is a little lower price, unless I can talk Andrew out of one of his Sparks. The only thing I worry about with the 2m Wind is weight, we did not weigh it but both of us were pretty sure it was overweight.
The week before the NATS I did get to fly AJ's 62" Osiris and was really impressed with that, he is getting pretty good with this airplane designing stuff. It flew just like the 2m pattern planes and tracked awesome in 15-20 mph winds. I am definately getting one!!
I think there is a lot of good airplanes out there to choose from but for us IMAC guys it is just a whole different ballgame and we have to start over again.

Great thread !! I'm in the market as well and a "covered" 2M ship would be my choice so that I can handle the repairs, dings & hanger rash that almost always comes with models,,,,,Five color paint jobs are not in my personal repair abilities, five color covering is.....
I have to wonder why, with the emergence of more affordable electrics for us now, why are the 2M ships weighed with batteries in? The IC models are weighed without fuel,,,,,,could that be a change the pattern community needs to help it grow-Keep the 2M plane specs, relive the weight rule to reflect modern times, weigh them without batteries (fuel)...IMO

How's it going?
In Canada the MAAC classes are weighed without batteries, we made that change a few years back. Only FAI is required to weigh with packs, as that is an FAI rule.
