Surprisingly, with the battery tray and 6s 8000 battery where I put them/guessed at, the plane balances dead on between 7 1/2 - 8". Havent put in a pilot yet so still may need a tad bit of nose weight.

I also obviously have that soft spot for AXIS planes. I mentioned a 90 sized spitfire I did in captured german colors and I do have a TF p-51 that doesn't get flown. Maybe if I gave it a good AXIS look, I might be inclined to take it to the field again. At least it wouldn't look like the million other p-51's that show up to the field every weekend.

I undertand.....
I had my TF giant p-51 ready to fly, and then decided to strip it down, re-inforce the landing gear, glass it, and paint it...
I went from a Fuji 63 to a REV55 and then a DA 50 and Kelo exhuast... ( bit of a learning curve)
I have lost interest/ or purchased other planes in the mean time....Very little time... or I am too fussy and do everything the
LONG hard way...(placing engines that are a pain to place in the bird) ect...

I have never assembled a plane like this.... It is normal, that the wings have some tension when placing the outside wing struts?
I guess it depends on the airfoil??? I had to pull the wings together when I placed the 2 red stuts, so the holes would line up..
I believe the manual said the airfoil would match the Landing gear???? What the??? hUH?///

I have some play in the Leading Edge/ wingtube to the Sudo Gas tank juction... I can move the wing back and forth..

If I place a small metal L-shape support with a screw on each end, would eleviate this..
I realize the play is do to the way the wing is secured to the top Tank.. as the screw passes threw
the wing tab and doesn't Tighten up on it.... It would have to be a exact fit /hole in that tab.....
Pehaps...I could epoxy it and then drill a new hole that fits it exact..

I should also add, that I did some fine fitment, to that junction, so the top wings sit FLUSH to the supporting gas tank.
If I didn't do that , the struts would take up the slack but cause a perminent front gap.... No much ...but enough to know...

I realize I am NIT picking hear.... Or tending the ladels or what ever the term is... The plane is very nice.... I was just wondering what others have done
if anything at all....

I want this plane to last .a while...

Horizon does not sell any engine that will fit in the tiger moth wiithout some modification. I have tried them all and nothing fits right. the 33GX fits (ish) but the cowl will not fit over the exhaust. that's why the things went for $300 at the end. anyway the OS FS 155a does fit without mods if you don't mind glow. Why would the designer make such a limited firewall? a little frustrating as I don't want to have to hack it up to make it work.

I fitted my Saito 150 using the existing firewall mounts. Two minutes with a small round file on one side of the mount did it. Great engine for this A/C.

actually the 150 is listed as an engine that will fit. but it is 138mm long so it's not an exact fit as the length from the firewall is 134mm. the OS 155 is 127 long and you can get the incowl header to move the muffler 80 degrees back. I went with the os GT22 with the Jtec compact muffler and it fits but I did have to open up the firewall.
once again not much fits without a mod. firewall aside it's a fine model

There is more than enough room on the cowl to make up for 1/8 of an inch. The diff between 138mm and 134mm is insignificant.

That is exactly what I did. I thought I got the last one. Also bought the evolution 33 engine but it does not fit in the cowl. Not even close. I sent it back and got an os 22 with a compact muffler and it fits with a little opening up of the firewall.

well we will see how the 33 does I mounted the 33 on beams got the cowl to center then I re did the flange on a angle on a mill. all fits under cowl will slide on with out pressure on it even put a small chunk of header wrap between the two for the heat. Oh i am sure in some little shop some where there is a moth to be had. i saw the price drop was not ready to buy then.looked on HH and saw still availble went to a lhs and asked him to order one next night went on line to look at build list said no longer avaible stopped next day he called while i was there said it should be in soon. had to build a bigger work bench for this bird largest i have played with was a 44 in albatross

last moth,

Please include some pics of your Evo 33GX installation, as you get farther along. I will follow your lead with mine.

dgliderguy I will try to get pics but I beleave it will be hard to see what i did.this is how I did it. mounted the motor and got the cowl lined up( in the propshaft hole in the cowl I used about 4" long dowl rod that fit the hole in the cowl, I found center on the dowl put a 3/8 hole for the motors propshaft to fit. this is how i lined up the cowl muffler not installed) To clear the carb a little triming on th large air inlet opening in the cowl was needed. based on my weedeater powered hydroplane the flange was half as thick so i milled about half the thickness off the flange. You must check the screws that holds the pipe on the motor,as you have removed the thickness of the pipe (I had to shorten my screws a few threads ) My pipe had a lot off overhang on the front I rounded off mine but you must be carefull doing this not to split the seam. My build dream is to add more detail to the moth I have other planes to barn storm with. this is what I did

Thee seems to be some confusion in the terminology concerning ARF's
You do not build an ARF you assemble them, there is a world of difference in the 2 words

Dennis,
Respectfully, I must ask what the purpose of your post might be. This thread has been about helping and sharing with each other how to build this fine aircraft. Mine flys great. If you were here, I'd let you take take the transmitter to give it a spin.

Cheers,
Carl Malone

Dennis,

Might as well give up on this one. Everyone I know uses the word "build" now to decribe putting ARFs together. I overheard a guy bragging out at the field last month that his latest airplane was his first "scratch-build". I realized he was decribing a kit, with laser-cut pieces. There's no hope for us true balsa-shapers now. We need to just buck up and buy into the new lexicon, and accept that the word "build" is no longer an accurate descriptor.

I would have laugh that guy off the field as would a lot of the guys in the local club.

KOCHJ,
Since you are the only person who made reference to the landing gear I would like to know if you or anyone else has modified it into a working landing gear. This thing has no give in it at all. Anyone came up with compression or tension struts to replace those in the box??? I just bought a bunch of springs started working on a tension lower strut. Will post pics if Einstein comes up with something workable..

Thanks

Rafeek

I take it all are talking 4 stroke engines.
I am putting a Saito 180 4 stroke in mine, that should be more than adequate with good sound effects..

Default Naked Tiger Moth

Here is a picture of my H9 Tiger Moth with the covering stripped off. Actually this is my second one. I am going to recover it in silver and dark green as the Tiger Moth I went up in while in New Zealand.

Oh for an affordable laser cutter!

March 15th - now got the wing painted and the cowl painted and strip added. Can't wait to get it in the air.

I stripped, recovered, and painted the H9 Tiger Moth as ZK-BLK. The other is now going to be stripped and redone as another New Zealand Tiger Moth ZK-BRC. Nothing like a Tiger Moth.
