Hi Vincent, do my best to help you out of your bad vibrations.
By the way, I happened to see the 1:6 Svenson Stoch kit for the first
time during my stay in Luxembourg, and bought it later at home.
For the present 1:5 project i have planned to use a Torcman outrunner, direct driven of course, and I haven't heard of any vib problems from those using the engine.
Besides the gear, it could be the Storch nose structure based on relatively long vertical struts especially with electrics. I have planned to use CF-tubes, also diagonally, to make it stiffer from
firewall onwards. Cowlings will also be of CF composite.
I should start building soon and send you some pictures later on.
You may not be too busy with the Storch as I understood.
Wish u all the best, JRN

Hi,
I am currently underway with a rather large 96 inch span Fieseler Storch 156. And for all those metric folk that is 2.4m span x 1.8m length.
So I would like to know if anyone can give me some info on the undercarriage. What kind of metal was used i.e. brass, aluminum. light steel? Any pointers or techniques used (I am a human sponge, need info!!).
Now any input or feedback from past projects etc. would be greatly appreciated because this has to look right and most importantly hold up.
Oh how much will it all weigh? I'd say around 4 to 5kg. The lighter the better of course!!(Modifications for saving weight has begun)
This model was set up for a 10cc IC noise violating and vibrating son of a gun motor. But now it will have a set up for a silky smooth AXI or Hacker brushless motor......mmmmm nice and quite!!
The Svenson plans from the original kit Storch has good detail drawings (sometimes) but lacks info on material type and if you happen to have some info of the Storch it would prove to be very handy indeed.
Oh and pictures also would be great please.
Thank you,
John

I am fascinated reading the various contributions on my all-time favorite airplane, the Storch
About 15 years ago I built an eighth scale (70 in span) from Dennis Bryant plans. It used an Irvine 40 two-stroke. Despite an expert on the sticks, it never flew properly. It only seemed to fly on full throttle and nose 30-degrees up. Cut the throttle or down elevator would have it coming down fast.
I double cheecked CG and incidences and they were spot-on. It is still in my loft so and suggestions to correct this would be appreciated. What about a bigger engine and a more forward CG?
More recently I acquired a sixth scale Svenson kit. Before I could start on it, I came across a ready built one. However when I got it home, I was horrified to find it weighed 15 pounds and was only powered by a Magnum 90 - the no longer made UK four stroke engine - not the current Taiwan motor
I didn't meet the original owner so I can,t find out about its flying performance. Reducing weight will be difficult short of stripping the covering off and drilling the airframe. Perhaps I shouldnt worry too much but just fit a more powerful motor - say a modern 120 fourstroke.
I want to get it ready for the spring so any suggestions would be welcome

davidej,
I also built the 70" Storch many years ago from the Dennis Bryant plans. I had a saito .45 four-stroke in it and it flew OK but I had the same experience as you did. I really liked the plane though, and the plans and construction were really nice, so I enlarged the plans to about 104" for a gasoline engine (G23). It weighs 14+ lbs.
On the bigger one I reduced the wing incidence somewhat and it flies much better and handles more like a big Cub. When I put the flaps down there is very little pitch change, too. I have to use the rudder a lot when flying it to keep from skidding or slipping in turns. I've had the bigger Storch for probably 10 years now and I love it! I take it out for a couple of sessions each year for some interesting STOL flying.
Since yours is already built it might be difficult to change the wing incidence without tearing apart the cabin area but if you're going to strip it down it might be worth considering.

I've recently started following the discussion on Storchs. I have a Storch I built form Bob Holman/ Dennis Bryant a few years ago. I gave up on the model because I couldn't get it to fly well. I tried three motor sizes OS 70 FS, then a 90 FS and finally ST 90; the model weighs about 5kgs. bothof the last two motors should have been powerful enough. It flew tail down and was quite unstable. After reading the discussion on this site I decided to change the incidence, put more weight in the nose and try it again. I can change the tail plane incidence quite easily since they are plug onitems. Heres hoping;i've spent quite a lot of time on the model painting detailing etc i would like to get it flying well.

anton ,
I am now building the same storch ,i have the fuselage and empenage completely framed and currently
working on the wings .
any pics you may have to share would be appreciated , any tips on the wing constr etc..
BTW what is your wing incidence now , what was it before the change ???
Thanks ,Chris

hi guys,
i have a set of plans and as soon as a couple other projects are done will get started, wingspan will be a huge 144" i have no idea who designed this set of plans as it is not stated on the sheets, but i think this will be a real fun project

hi,
The storch I've built is the bigger 96 inch wingspan. So far I've increased the tailplane incidence by about +3 degrees. I've cut off the old wooden motor mount and mounted a new one, mounting it so that the rails are parrallel with the main wing incidence, which they weren't before. Before when I flew the model I was concerned about the fixed l.e. slats and the affect they would have on the flying atitude etc. as experience with sport STOL fitted with slats indicates that they have a significant affect drag wise. If the model was flying at the right attitude i.e. level rather than tail down then the drag component would be less since the slats wouldn't be at an incidence where they would be operating and causing drag. I spent quite a lot of time taking the slats off and remounting them to see if that made any difference. At the moment I think my model was affected by a number of compounding problems; small in themselves but adding up to make a model that was difficult to fly. I hope to see if i've sorted the problem by flying the model in the next few weeks.

Can someone point me in the direction of a Storch 156 plan, or better a KIT (wingspan > 70'', 180cm). Preferably electric or I will try and convert plans to electric. Take a look at the Kokam LiPoly cells...

Hi vincent,
I am desperately trying to find the instruction manual and parts list for the Svenson Storch. If you have it and were will to send I would be very grateful. I will cover all the costs for postage or perhaps it could be scanned and emailed?
Best Regards
Adam.

Adam,
Check your email. I really need to finish my Storch. Always busy with other planes. Last weekend i flew my Auster J1 again (after being stored away for more then 10 years). The Auster is 220 cm and has an OS120 FT-II. Just a real plane when it's flying (sound and appearance).

Reading through these posts I was amazed no one knew of Ed Newman's 1/4 and 1/3rd scale Storch with as much exposure it has
enjoyed in recent years at Top Gun, Scale Masters and other scale contests. This is a true precision scale model. Having built the
Svenson years ago and knowing there isn't much else out there that qualifies as a true scale kit, I began looking to see why it was
not being discussed in detail. Ah, I found several rocks covering Ed's Storch...

Hi Paul, Ed,
@ Ed......Rocks??? what am I missing? Must be Texas talk.
Been working hard on my 1/4 scale Storch.....In the painting process now as you can see.
Using KlassKote paint and it is wonderful stuff. Storch is about 8 ft. long and has about 140 inch
wingspan. Should weigh in between 35 and 40 pounds, Laser 3.60 4 stroke for power, Robart brakes!!!!!!
The wing in the photo is laying up against a 6' high step ladder.
The plan I used for the 1/4 scale Storch is same plan I used on the 1/5 scale Storch, just plotted
out larger. That is the nice thing about Cadd generated drawings.

Hello Ed:
Glad to see we uncovered Ed...
I know you want to sell plans, and components for your design. When I discovered this thread and the older designs
being discussed I thought of you and your "scale" kit design. I immediately began searching within Google and found
nothing at all until I expanded to include the Thunderbird web site and found photos there. There were two or three
other references relative to Top Gun. I checked to see if you were listed in the USSMA links, IMAA links, etc. I didn't
find anything beyond the Thunderbird web site photo until I reposted one from Frankie's site.
If you have a web site focused on your Storch(es) go to Google and register if using the free registration so when the
world comes looking, you will be found. Let these guys know the address because Ed Newman, Ed Newman's Storch,
etc. do not get results.

Ed,
Didn't know I could register with Google. I'll see if I can figure it out.
Guess I spend more time in the "Storch" factory than in front of the
computer.
Meantime my web site is: http://webpages.charter.net/neilt/
and my email address is: [email protected]
if anyone wants to contact me...and talk Storches.
I have built and flown the Svenson Storch. It is 1/6 scale...94 inch WS.
Would love to find another kit of the Svenson Storch....or 2.
My plan and parts are 1/5 scale...112 inch WS...Laser 200 4 stroke, 22 lbs.
The photos above are of my 1/4 scale Storch...140 inch WS, haven't
decided on whether I want to sell plans and parts for it yet. Will wait till
its flown and decide. I am so close to finishing it, I seem to spend more time
in the shop than I should.

Hi TMOTH,
I am about to build the Dennis Bryant 96 inch Storch. I wonderd if you had any photos or build tips for this such as the sequence of build etc. I have not built many from plans alone, is it v difficult? Also I bought the bob holman parts.
Cheers,
Adam.

Hope you work out the problems with the electric Storch. I am considering building an 8'. I have a set of plans from 1970 drawn by Robert Sweitzer (anyone know him), but may switch to the Holman plan. The Sweitzer plan doesn't have a very scale appearance in the cockpit frame (big plywood former, no tubing). Does the Holman plan detail the cockpit framing? How about hinging the control surfaces and hiding the pushrod/horns etc.? Is there enough detail to scratch this model from the plans?

Hello, I found one on e-bay uk a couple of years ago at a desent price.I dont think svenson is still making these kits but there's a company out of italy that made a kit of the storch, I think the company's name is AVIOMODELI, godd luck finding a svenson kit without burning a hoe on your wallet!!
