Hi guys, I'm patching up a Royal B-17 that I got complete from some hangar rash and need a 10x10 pice of olive drab flat monokote or equivalent and a 10x10 flat dove gray monokote or equivalent... if anyone has some left from a project and is willing to send it for a few dollars please PM me.  Thank you in advance....

They make Flat monokote? Now you tell me! I had to use gloss dove gray on the bottom on the one I built.

Hi guys, I was trying to finish a Royal Bearcat when I stumbled across this thread. I must say you guys are some of the most dedicated builders I've come across. I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I'm impressed. Years ago I built the Royal .60 Corsair kit and scratchbuilt three more from the plans. The three I scratchbuilt were almost 1 1/2- 2 lbs lighter then the kit. In 1986 this Royal F-4 was built and is still flying today. I drilled well over a pound out of the inlets. My daughter took the vid and it was her first time with the camera.Keep up the great work.

That Royal Bearcat is looking good. Mmm, does it have retracts? All the time it takes to build a Royal model, save 30 bucks a month and soon you will have the money to buy retracts! Air retracts are VERY VERY reliable IF you do your homework. The skill requierd to install retracts is minimal compared to the skill reqiured to build a Royal airframe. With all the cheep ARF's out there there is always something to fly while the quality build time is spent on a Royal kit installing retracts.
There are only two excuses left for no retracts, health probs. or kids.

It does have retracts! That's great!

It doesn't have retracts yet. This was started quite a few years back. I already have
a6 warbirds with mechanical retracts and a Yellow P-51 with phenumatic ones. I
was leaning towards wingspan, but the more i read about them they only go up
to 10lbs. I have Robart air for a TP corsair that I haven't put in yet that I could use.
The bearcat with the engine and gear weigh 10 1/2lbs. I'm open to suggestions
right now.

Bearcats are tricky due to the articulating retracts that the full size ones have. Us modelers that build non GIANT scale do not rank with the RC retract companies when it comes to retracts for a bearcat. There is no easy solotion for a scale set up, a compromise is necessary. The Royal Bearcat kit shows the retracts in the scale location when they are up when nobody sees them way up in the air. Then when they are down they are to short. Then the model sits to low. I tried to come up with a good compromise on my Top Flite Rare Bear Bearcat. It still isnt right.

Thats why I've puttung them off.  There is no easy solution.  By the way Scale dail is your Bearcat
the one on You-Tube with the K&B 100.  If it is thats one awesome plane.   I started out with
K&B's many years ago.  I didn't even know they made them that big!  That's a real
beautiful job you did.  That F-4 in the vid has a long story behind it.   Next year I'm
stuffing a .90 with a pipe in it and running it in the warbird fly-in next year.

I wasn't tracking how you were describing the Bearcat's articulated landing gear, and then I found this on one of the searches.

It shows how complex it is. I would imagine that only the most skillful modellers in the world would be able to make a working model of that gear that he'd comfortably want to fly on an RC plane. There's a locking pin that retracts on the strut that releaseas the main gear strut, and then there's a two-bar, parallelogram link that controls the folding. It's awesome to look at, but really hairy. I suppose its no worse than the 90º turning types like on the AH-1 Skyraiders. The lifting cylinder is small and tucked up near the top. It's a high-powered one since it has limited mechanical advantage to do the lifting.

As soon as I finished writing this reply, I continued searching and found an entry on this site with a custom-made articulated retract set for an Israeli builder. So I guess you can make a scale retracting Bearcat gear. Isn't the Internet GREAT! Here's the link.

Builder, I made a mock-up when I was building the bearcat and it actually worked, but
it seemed too flimsey so I put the fixed gear in. I think because of the weightI have heavy duty
Robarts that will go in and it's an older set where I think I could hook it up to look articulated
enough. If I can get it close I'll be happy.

Skip thats a good price. One of the club members just bought one for $350.

Frankly, the real one seems too flimsey. Strength of materials changes as we shrink down to model sizes. Some things just don't scale well. But that Isreali machinist seemed to make a pretty convincing version.

Articulating retracts for Bearcats are, or have been, available from several sources. Admittedly none are small enough for the Royal kit but for the larger scales they can be had.

Blaa Blaa Blaa! Of course there are correct retracts for GIANT Bearcat models! The RC model industry is in bed with the GIANTS. I have 3 Royal Bearcats waiting for a solution. A few years ago, when I was rich, I offerd a ridiculos amount of money to sierra to scale down 4 sets. They would not do it.
So build GIANT scale then, you say. No thanks.
There will be a time when a solution for the Royal Bearcat arrives.

I feel your pain. Anybody can build a complicated mechanism that can hold up a plane when it's big enough. The trick is making it small.  Kind of reminds me about a story about Etore Bugatti... His cars had advanced supercharged engines in the 1930s, but had cable operated brakes; all mechanical. Someone asked him why he has a car that can go 120 mph, but has mechanical cable brakes. His answer, "Any idiot can make a car stop... it takes a genius to make it go really fast!" We can paraphrase that to our complex landing gear problem. Corey... If I had the equipment, I'd build them for you.

Thanks! When the time comes if nothing else happens, it will be time to make a wood mock up. Then find someone to machine the parts.
Those Bearcats are in the same future pile as my Top Flite P-39 with a mid mounted glow engine, Custom RC F8U crusader with the single strut lifting wing, and Pica 1/6th Mustang-Red Baron with contra rotating prop driven by glow.

I have just got a Royal Plane Spitfire MK 8, which has never been finished. The guy who has made it died for 15-20 years ago. My dad got the plane from the wife of the dead pilot, and after 3 years I said that it could be fun to make it finish. Then my dad put it in my car right away.

A lot of parts are missing and some of the wood has been damaged because of moisture, but it is not a big problem. I just found the cockpit on e-bay and got if for only 10$.

Have any of you ever seen or had one of Royal Spitfire. it is almost impossible to find pictures of it.

I knew the guy who has built it. He would make it like of one of the Danish Spitfire, because he´s brother had been a pilot in one of them just after the war.

The Spitfire on the picture is located on a Danish museum only about 80km from my city. My plan is to go and see it, when I have time. Maybe I will make mine in these colors.

My plan is to make it with some scale details and retractable gear.

Great looking Spit PSN. I know it has absolutely nothing to do with the subject of this thread but I searched high and low for a color scheme for my Midwest Harvard and, out of thousands of options, I finally settled on Danish markings. The red/white roundells and fin flash look great and add tremendously to the visibility, as do the yellow undersides. They look just as good on the Spitfire in your pics above. I've had lots of people guess as to the nationality of the markings but, so far, nobody has managed to identify them correctly! I was saddened to learn that the restored Harvard that I based my model on was lost in a fatal crash not too many years ago.

Is this the same kit? It says wingspan is 900mm which is about 40" I'm thinking this Royal/Marutaka Spitfire is bigger...
