Default Type of material for scratch building

Hello,

I have started planning on building a tank from scratch. I would like to use plastic sheet for the hull etc. but I do not know what thickness would be good to use especially since I plan to convert the finished tank to r.c use in I.R battles where the outside field is rough and it is hot outside.

I would appreciate any suggestions in plastic specs in inches not metric please.

Thanks

George

There's a lot to take into consideration. What do you plan on building, a tank of your design or already designed tank such as a Panzer III or Cromwell? I would suggest making at least the lower hull, if you can, from sheets of aluminum to help reduce flexing. If you must use plastic(styrene?), make sure to add sufficient bracing. I would think for a 1/16(assumption since you mentioned IR) you'd want plastic between 1/8" and 1/4" thick for the hull. It really depends on how big of a tank you plan to build.

Hi Mad Modder,

Thanks for the Fast reply. I forgot to mention that I am scratch building a 1/16 Tank. I have the lower hull from a donated Tank with it`s running gear as well. So I need to construct the Upper Half etc. It must be able to hold up to I.R R.C. battles outdoors and in the heat.

So I need a recommendation for plastic sheet thickness. Also where can I get plastic sheet with diamond pattern on its surface for open floor use in the tank?

Thanks Again for Any help.

Diamond plate source.........fast delivery, good prices. I get everything from this outfit.

1/8th inch styrene works for me a lot. 3/16 inch is stiffer, sometimes I use that for big models, like the Elefant. I never found a need for 1/4 inch for a 1/16th scale model.

i have used 3mm abs plastic plate for my superstructure of my jagdtiger with in the hooks square 3mm plastic profile reinforcements to strenghten it up all together bound by bison supergleu

it it very strong bounded will stand the big 128mm alu canon with alu strips mounted on the upperplate of the panzerjager

for the hull i would recommended 5mm plate with brass or ball bearings
