SLU (No Problems)
#27

Hi I have 3 SLUs and will be getting more. The sounds are great (I thnk there beter than Tamiya)it handles like a Tamiya performance wise,O K. the battle unit needs a lttle work but I think it is possible to modifie it for very little cost to have 45 degree defence and also slope defence,it should also help shade the sensors for direct sunlight.the idea I have had will make it look like a box on top .But who says it has to be round.Another idea is to have sunshades fitted to each sensor extending out to stop side shots.
As for other types of Battle unit,I have DBU ,TBU,Modified Heng long units with lights and 4 sensors,Elmod battle unit, also have a few tanks with hidden battle units in side the cupolar .Which Martin(expat)dosnt like at all he says you cant see where to aim,but the all take hits form all sides and have flashing lights also around cupolar and in the engine deck.
All my new builds will have the SLU fitted ,and I intended to upgrade all of my tanks fitted with DBCs will cost abit and will take time. But I havnt had any problems with the SLU the cost is half the cost of Tamiya DMD/MF,comes as a complete package ,works well with both 3:1 gears and standard gears.plenty of power to move a big tank 30amps .
I have had the SLU running along side an EL-mod with the same speakers the El-mod is only just slightly better, the sounds of the tracks just tipped it el-mods way ,as for the other sounds engine start ect equal to the el-mod.But you can have 2 sets of SLUs for the price of an El-mod setup. El-mod does have a place doing things other systems cant,Meteor engine for example no one dose this sound.

Ill chip in and say the is a great bit of kit, great sound, great function and I would say my elepfant has much better slow speed performance with the SLU than the tamiya dmd. I think the half the price of tamiya guts might be pushing it a bit though, tamiyas about £210 to the £160 of an SLU (although the slu does come with ir emiter and apple)

Hi Tom,Mine only cost £130 complete(I know there going up in price isnt everything) ,dont forget you have to spend another £60 for the tamiya battle unit and also a Tamiya recoli unit and flash.which will be another £40-50.
Even with the price increase I still think there well worth the money..
Jim I dont have any photos yet ,have just bought a new laptop (still have all my stuff on the old P.C.)havnt had time to sort out .But if you contact Fireman tim he sells the SLU he should be able to help with photos of instation.

I got lucky and bought mine for £100 second hand but un opened. Sadly there was a fault with the ESC so its been sent back for repairs. Its pretty easy to set up once you get your head round it. Once everythings snugly in place it should be pretty robust! Just double check everything in the setup as the are alot of connections to make and getting them wrong could fry things quite easily!

What Kind fo DBC have you got?
#33

Hi Dan most of mine are the standard DBCs about5 working and maybe4 spares in the drawer, but i do have 2 RC2 DBCs which because of the conections of the reciever fly leads ,they tend to break so have had a few issues with ,your idea of fitting plugs is a big improvement.most of the DBCs/DBUswork great have had very few problems with them, but have had a few problems with the small sound cards Dave uses.I think there is only 4 still working correctly.
When I have time will check outall the boards I havespare and let the new guys have them to get them up and running with battlesystems.

Devildog,
I don't know if you still need but here is how I layout my SLU in my Panzer 3, I just installed last week. It is a pretty tight fit.
First I removed all the plastic mounts that held the old Heng Long electronics and smoker. I angled the SLU in the back and removed the clear plastic that's on top for some extra space.
For the apple, I laid a piece styrene on top to cover the old switch hole then cut a slot to insert the plug and epoxy it in place. Because the Panzer's cupola can be twisted on and off , I insert a cut down crazy glue container up through the bottom of the cupola where it fits snugly, then twist it back on over the apple for protection. I just have to finish cleaning up the wires a little, but I have already taken it for test drive, and hands nicely. It may become my new favourite battle tank.

It all depends what you want your tank to do! Your HL will happily Pootle about indoors and on light terrain. People seem to think the rx18 to be a decent ESC (IMO I think it's rather jerky and doesn't help handling on grass). Although this does seem to be when used in combination with a DBC and hobby radio, but then with that the price is already rising. For more serious work I still think the SLU offers the best value for money as it provides a fantastic ESC great sound and is very flexiable for battling as it can be programmed via the remote control which is supplied. The battle system, speaker and LEDs are all supplied too.

Not sure if there is a typo in that sentence, but to be clear an RX18 when mated to a DBC2 with the momentum, and a good gearbox handles fine. The difference between it an a Tamiya system is unnoticeable.
Quite frankly there is enough difference in each system that to say one is better then the other is subjective at best. Each one offers something different. EL MOD, Beier and Benedini offer programmable sound so one system can be used in multiple tanks. You just need to spend 5 minutes altering the sound file, and what was once a Sherman is now a Tiger. The fact that these systems can be moved around in different tanks can if fact save you money over having to buy a unit for each tank. Look at your work bench and count the dollars of sound systems sitting in tanks, making no sound!!!!. SO again value of these system depends on your needs, and the opinion about that value is very subjective.
JUst like some are quite happy with the HL IR system for their needs. So the Beier sound system that fits to HL tanks would give these users great sounding tanks with the HL IR system. A lot would claim that is the best value. TOO bad Heng Long never used the same frequency the Tamiya uses, and then these HL users could use their factory tanks against Tamiya without having to purchase anything

you have to admid that the HL battlesystem works only ten to twelve meters while the tamiya system goes far beyond
the same with the transmitter my HL panther is unsteerable at 12m sometimes even lesser while my tamiya rides 50 to 100m away without no problems at all
both have their pro's and contra's i would say if you can afford a tamiya build one and compare it
if you are not fan of the tamsoundmodule you can sell it an buy a benedini instead the sound would be again better but don't forget the higher price for the benedini or elmods
am totaly agree with YHR too

@ YHR, just re read what I put, my structures a bit off, what I meant was a lot of people like the rx 18 when combined with a DBC and hobby radio. My opinion is based on a stock rx18 with the HL controller. Sorry for the confusion!

So to be clear, the Tamiya apple cannot plug directly into the SLU battlesystem socket?
And the IR emitter plugs into the SLU apple or the SLU board?
The SLU unit has a great size advantage over Tamiya and I would like to use it for smaller projects, but alas, if not compatible with Tamiya....

There's no way the Tamiya System is over priced.

NO, the Tamiya apple cannot plug directly into the SLU battlesystem socket without modification.
IR emitter plugs into the SLU apple not the SLU board.
