Default When Mato gears fail...

When the Mato plastic gears fail.... My Mato Sherman had been running pretty good but at the last battleday right drive died with a sickening crunch. Opened up the gearbox and the plastic final drive was split clean. So, looked around, found some Mato Tiger gearboxes and with a little work fitted them in quite nicely and they run pretty good now! The 3 piece transmission cover fits over the bolts at the front so can't be seen once that is mounted...

Would henglong or taigen units have fit? Just curious, I loath the all metal mato boxes. Their QC is so hit and miss, the gears in my first set wobbled around a lot. The second set was better and I wound up mixing gears from both sets with thrust shimming to solve all the issues. Wont every use them again if I can help it.

Yes, could have used the others but thought I would give these a try. I have 3 sets that I picked up on a deal. Will run them the rest of the summer and see how they do. As you can see they are not in permanently in there...

Please keep us posted on how it works out. I have a Mato Sherman and would LOVE to toss the plastic gears. I even have a nice steel 3:1 Tiger gearbox to use.

Same here! Many pics please. What was your source of the 3 piece transmission cover (Shapeways?)? I'm transforming my Mato to a Grizzly and while up for it, not looking forward to scratchbuilding the cover.

Thanks,

Mike.

Hey Mike,

I sell a nice resin one. Can't post it here because it's against the rules.... Go to http://dgsselkirk.wixsite.com/dgsmilitaryhobby and you can send me an e-mail from there....

I am headed to the field tonight and am going to shoot some video of the new gearboxes in action...

I'm having the exact same issue with my M4A3 after several hours of use. Initially they were as tight & quiet but now the chatter / grinding noise is so loud at this point it totally drowns out engine & other sound effects, & I'm already seeing brass filings on the hull floor. MATO claims the "wobble" is within tolerance but offered to send shims for a fix if I want.

The losseness is within the normal range. and it will not affect the normal operation of the gearbox. We can provide some shims to you to fill the space if you mind. But it may heat up due to friction during the gearbox working for your reference.
Anyone have a better solution?

A wobbling gear is out if tolerance on anything other than a POS toy. Mato gear boxes are junk. They did not have shims when i bought mine, man i cannot bash that prouct enough.
I would suggest an attempt to retro fit taigen or tamiya depending on your hull. I looked at doing this to a mato metal sherman but gave up the idea. Now i think i am better at this and might have attempted it if necessary.
Taigen screw from the top so it would be minor to modify the hull. Tamiya come from the bottomso one idea would be to put them in the shaft holes, scre them to a plate that is made to fit, then rotate them down and screw the plate in.

Default Mato M4A3 Metal

Yes, am starting to agree that what they are selling certainly isn't worth the price, especially after only a few hours use. I've not yet removed the gearbox but from what I observe it appears the frame is not true & pushed out with 3mm play. I'll take it apart this weekend & see what can be done or better yet, follow your suggestion on a retrofit to fix it.

Another pet peeve of mine is their lack of thread lock on any fasteners. Between that & the sloppy paint work, I wish had purchased this in bare metal & done a thorough check & finished it myself.
