So this is apparently a third party company that makes tank electronics. Do these electronics complement, say, the existing HL electronics or do they replace them entirely?
Are they worth it?

You can either complement the existing HL electronics, or replace them entirely, depending on the modules that you choose. According to what I've gathered from others, elmod components can be rather pricy, but they are more superior to the Tamiya electronics because they offer more features. And yes, they also offer IR battle systems which are compatible with Tamiya's one.
For more info, you can read their FAQ section.

IMHO, whether it is worth it or not will depend on what you already have or have not. If you have the $$$ and time and don't have any tank to start of with, then I suggest you get the Tamiya tank. But if you already have one (or more) HL tanks, then it may be cheaper and better to get the Elmod system alone. Not sure about you, but in my coutnry, the latter option is cheaper.
Maybe some guys here with the elmod system can give a better answer. BTW, I'm also thinking about the elmod system (already have a Tamiya system), but the problem is - I'm not sure how to order it without my wife knowing about it...

IR-compatible with Tamiya's battle system in "compatibility mode", the El-mod battle system in its own mode has a few extra features on the Tamiya system.
El-mod sound unit (Blaster) holds a 80 sounds per jumper setting, I think it has 4-6 settings so thats a ton of tanks. Switch the jumpers, whole new sounds (all). Good for switching between tanks. All sounds are held on common SD memory card (included). Idle-moving-revving is much smoother and transitional than Tamiya's overly-repetitive sample style.
Booster (main unit) can handle decent sized motors, TLS deals with Turrets Lights and Shooting (can interface flash unit). Comes in two flavours - "PROP" to work with "regular" aftermarket transmitter/receivers or "HL" which you wire in with your HL board to use the stock HL boards as a receiver/motor sense and stock HL transmitter.
I have a set (Blaster Thinktank M PROP, Booster, TLS, spare Blaster CPU, all wiring etc) sitting in a box, unsure if I'll ever use it with one of my projects.

Hi,
Wacky, I fill you in on the Blaster. With the jumpers you choose tanktype, at the moment the SD card is preloaded with these:
-(111) Tiger with turret sound v.1.52. CSI Ready.
-(110) Panzer III v.1.0. CSI Ready.
-(101) Sturmtiger v.1.0. CSI Ready.
-(100) T-34 v.1.1. CSI Ready.
-(011) Tiger without turret sound v.1.52. CSI Ready.
-(010) M4 diesel (Beta) v.1.0. CSI Ready.
-(001) Gepard (Beta) v.1.1. CSI Ready.
-(000) Ma Bakers Ford 1931 v.1.0
from http://www.el-mod.de/history.php?osC...38640ba74dbc1d
Each tank type can have approximately 80 sounds (Cold start, warm start, stopp, chain squeak 1-10, Engine 1-40, gun, mg, barrel, turret 1-7, user defined 1-4) you can also modify the sound or make your own. (.wma files)
Look here for samples and technical info.

I have no other reference than HL sound, so I can not judge if El-Mod is better than Tamiya. But it sounds ok to me and the flexibility is great.
Regards Jake
