Thanks again Rivetcounter!
This is truly exhausting, but absolutely fun at the same time. A big part of me wants to say the hell with it and just run the tank as is. But to me, my tank is a working model, so I would prefer it be as accurate or near close as possible. Not sure if I could say that I'm dedicated though, lol.....I think it's almost become an obsession!
Could you elaborate on the Panther fan? I don't know where to begin to look for references on that since I haven't put much energy in that tank type yet, cause I don't own it.
edit: Now I know what your talkin about. Seems like advance technology for that time.....although, so is infrared night vision. Can't seem to find close up shots of working "flammvernichter" exhausts on the panzer v. I think I've downloaded or viewed just about every book scribed has to offer on german tanks. http://www.scribd.com/search?cat=redesign&q=panzer

Although the photos are not good, I have no idea one way or the other as to a screen on the top of the extentions. Judgement call on that.
Working Flammvernichter photos? As in installed, variants, or what? Panthers had them towards the end, and I think I once saw a late KT with a modified Flamm exhaust. Panthers had two variants in addition to the stock vertical cylinder with the fins in the opening. Lemme rummage around and see what I got. Don't have much time this AM, got to head to City for a mutt show. Sigh.

Knew I had a photo of the other version. This is what I saw on a KT Late some years ago also. Mod of the Flamm exhaust to direct the hot exhaust away from the tank.
This is a late war field mod as far as I know to the Panthers. I do not think it was a factory deal, but I may be wrong on that.

Sev this is not a field mod it’s a factory equipped mod, the top portion of the exhaust with the curve is detachable and was rarely ever left in place there are pictures of this type of exhaust on A models and as you say a version was going to be used on Tiger II there is a picture of this fitted to a Tiger II if I can find it

Thanks you Bob and Rivetcounter.
I was searching all night long for a diagram of a working flame suppressor exhaust with the working fan. I guess it would help to know which version it was. The best I could find was wecohes version....and does me no good cause it's to bits, but at least I can see that it does have working fans which I thought was just a grate cover on the exhaust at first. http://www.wecohe.de/shop/index.php?...roducts_id=118
Obviously there's a working diagram of the exhaust or wecohe wouldn't have been able to make it. I just have to find it!

OK, rivet, thanks for filling me on on that. For some reason, probably no reason, I had it in my mind that it was a field mod. I too well remember a photo of a very late KT with this system on it, but it was some time ago, before I moved here, and if I saved that photo, it was on the computer that was deep sixed before the move. Thought I had all the tank related stuff on a disc, but obviously not. If you run across the photo, would you mind popping it to me in an email?

D,
Here is a pic I took of my Jagdpanther. It has the same type exhaust. I cut off the hood and fashioned the fan from thin brass sheet. I made a disc and cut into it with scissors to make the vents. I used a brass brade for the center hub. It's not perfect but from just a few inches away you can't tell the difference and it beats spending $50.00 for a custom part.

I'm not sure it is a fan per se, my thoughts would be it's more of an exhaust gas dispersion deal that does not rotate. Stranger things have been done, but I can think of a couple dozen reasons to not make what is in essence a turbine subjected to extremely hot exhaust gases and an environment that could at best be described as not friendly, at worst positively hostile. One twig or clod of mud and it stops.

Alright!!! Thanks a heap 1sgt!
Did you follow a specific amount of blades that should be there? Do you know?
If you look at the wecohe kit, they have 4 sets of brass fans.....which is throwing me for a loop!
So those are actual fan blades, not spokes in a grill or are the fan blades under the grill?

That's kool that your making that version tiger. As tireing as it is knowing the tiger is like one of the most popular tanks. I think you my friend will have one of the most unique versions that isn't quiet common at all...I've searched sites and other forums and havent seen one rc version of thsi tank. How far are you to completing it?
I'm new to the forums all together and I dont have my first tank yet.
I've been pondering what tank to get and I really don't want a tiger or atleast the tiger being my first tank. This version is very tempting though. If I do decided to get a tiger, would you mind assisting me on converting it to this verzion?
Cant wait to see more pics of it!

Thanks alot Tankfanatic!
Welcome to the forums.
I'm not very far into my conversion.....well, far enough to have my tank all cut up into bits. I'm running into issues of not being properly prepared before starting my conversion. So I'm having to do alot of researching in between in order to move on, (quite likegoing against strong winds,I manage tostumble back a few stepsalong the way.) Also, I have priorities like everyone else.
I must admit, I got a little cocky. Because my profession is sculpting, I thought this would be a breeze, but to the contrary....it's a different world. This isn't using so much of my imagination where I can freely create something no ones ever seen. This is mimicking history. But, being crafty and having some of the supplies needed helps.
Luckily we have great knowledgeable forum members that help guide me along the way. I don't know if I could say that this tank would be rare among the RC tank world, but I agree.......I haven't seen many or any RC Tiger #100 in my searches. Although I have seen kits available for this conversion, it's very mediocre and only provides enough to make the obvious changes like the two stowage bins, two pistol ports and a replacement back covering once the original stowage bin has been removed.
If and when you finally get a Tiger and still want to try this conversion. I'd be more than happy to assist.
I'll have more pictures posted in the next few days, so be on the look out for it. Right now, it's not much to look at to post current photos.
P.S. Everyone should own at least one Tiger and who cares if almost everyone has a Tiger!!

dedmonwakin, been reading your posts with interest as I'm part way through an initial conversion tiger myself and I like yours a lot. As you say, there are so many little differences compared to later versions, One I'm not sure of, can someone confirm for me that the raised armoured section on the left of the gun mantlet to protect the gunners periscope was only added after Tunisia? I'm sure I've seen photo's of Tiger 131 at Bovvy without it. Don't want to highjack your post mate but as its a question about an initial version hoped perhaps you may know?

No problem bud, post away. Tailend Charlie made a 142 conversion so honestly, he may be the one to know. I'm not all too familiar with the history of 131. Not sure if you've ever visited the Tigers in Focus site, but they have big discussions going on. Here's a link just in case. They've posted tons of pic's there where I've tried to help identify this for you, but it only managed to confuse me. For instance, the various pic's that are shown...there are so many changes, from the painted numbers, mounted tracks on the glacis, varied exhaust covers from the restored version to the version that's on Tailend Charlies's version, modified head lamps, missing front fender to repaired front fender.......so many differences with no accurate timeline in those pics.
But if you are aware of most of the changes to a specific timeline like the original identification number vs the altered id number, you may be able to tell when these modifications occurred.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

There are 14 difforent mantles for the Tiger I but yes 131 didn’t have the web across the gun sights
Most people think all the late Tigers where the same with no differences but they couldn’t be further from the truth the one part of a Tiger that was considerably modified was the turret and for the late Tiger there are 3 different turret roofs at least 4 different type of loaders hatch 2 muzzles 2 commanders cupolas 3-4 mantles not all had the close defence weapon and only the last few had the pilzen, Tigers are the most popular and the least understood German tank most people see them in 4 groups initial, early, mid and Late but there are various groups within these there where modifications carried out every month from beginning to the end of production

Good point Rivet,
Here's a link that describes the modification of the Tiger I, but I think some of these have to be taken with a grain of salt. It doesn't include field mods to specific tanks....

Aw yes the changes. I went crazy with all of them. When I first stated that I was going to convert a Early Tiger1 into the Initial Tiger1 142 of the 501 swathdiver wished me good luck, but with his help and hours upon hours of research it was finally done. I did not know how many changes there were.
Like rivetcounter said they changed almost on a monthly if not weekly basis. That's not counting the field mods.
I am doing a Panther D which is a little more straight forward yet still a lot of changes.
dedmonwakin is in for some fun, but is off to a good start. And once done will have a unique Tiger1.
You can see the complete 142 build plus my panther D and others here at the DAK sight. Lots of great builds and info.

Thanks!!!. The Initial Tiger has become my favorite cat. There is just something about it that intrigues me. The PantherD is a close second.

A panther will probably be my next tank. If and when I do get a panther, I think I'd be tempted to convert it to the British Panther "Cuckoo" lol....we'll see! Maybe I should find something harder with very little information....seems I'm on a streak anyhow! lol

The harder to find and research the more unique and one of a kind. I like the obscure and hard. That's why I picked the Tiger1 142 and the PantherD 434. I haven't seen ether done yet.
