Hi all,

Again: Read this to remove slop on the steering section!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To get rid off any slop in the steering section first you have to do:

- Important!! CA between the rod end (86144) and the bal (85230), keep moving until the CA is dry! (also all other bal/rod end on the HF)
- Very Important!! There is a lot of slop on the steering Bushing (86508) and the steering arm 85507 2/4, fill that up!!!! (tighten the screw alone wil not do the job) The steering plate 87531 itself is OK
- tighten the servo saver nut (i use a high Torque Digital Servo: DS1015 from Ace r/c)
- Shim''s between Front Spindle Carrier 85506 and M4 Head Screw
- Shim''s behind Hex Hub Adapter 86387

This wil take most of the slop away!!

By the way: Don''t sel, every car has some flaw !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just enjoy the ride !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I too have just torn down the front end trying to reduce the slop. My biggest problem is where the servo saver meets the upper deck, just like you-j-boy. I put a washer between the top deck and servo saver-not much difference. I tightened the servo saver purple screw as tight as I could-nothing. I still haven't found a way to remove the rediculous amount of slop this Trug comes with right out of the box. An email to HPI has yielded no help.

I am actually contemplating selling the Hellfire and puting the founds toward an Eight T or something in the level of Truggy.

Good luck,
Joe

Yeah I hear you man. My problem is that I see too many Losi's and Mugens that break up under racing conditions. If the Hellfire SS is nothing else, it is tough! Not to mention the price. You cant pick up a NIB mugen or Losi off of Ebay for 300 or less. I go to club races and between heats when everybody else is tearing there trug apart cause something is broke or bent I just sit there wondering how somebody could possibly want to tear down there vehicle between one race and the next. I have never broken my SS on a track. Matter of fact I've only broken one a-arm so far! I have had no trouble with diffs, spur, or any of the things that seem to plague the RTR guys. But I never know when my steering servo is going to give up the fight. Once I get this problem fixed the SS will be a dream to race.

Actually if I was going to sell, I would sell everything, MGT, Cyclone, Axe EZ, two electric evaders, and 4 micro T's. I figure I could use the grand total to get a Baja 5B....[X(]
Only thing that stops me really is that there would't be anyone for me to race around here!

Buzz... thanks for the tips (again lol). I plan to look into these areas first chance I get. If I can come up with a good and practical way to keep the servo saver from wiggling I will let everybody know.

Post yoo's later!

So how come nobody's told me that I'm an idiot yet???? - LOL - I tore down the front end yesterday and the first thing i realized as that the servo saver is doing just what it's supposed to do. I mean if it doesn't pivot, it aint working! LOL Ofcourse its going to wiggle back and forth... thats what it does!!! All I have been seeing is the servo traveling back and forth from the slop right?

I am in the process of doing what Buzz said to do and I suggest that the rest of you forget what I said and do the same thing. My post really makes no sence!! LOL

I also have figured out that theres a fair amount of slop coming from my Futaba 3305 servo alone. I have been told to stop being cheap and get a good servo. I guess I'll have to try it cause the 3305 ain't helping matters much. They are a great high torque metal geared servo but I think I need something that doesn't budge unless my radio tells it to. I'll keep working at it and let you all kno what I find.

Post ya'all later!

ORIGINAL: j-boy

hey folks! OK so I just finished reading through the whole thread! Seriously! It took a few days but I managed to do it. I''ve been looking for any and all ideas to improve steering.

If you recognize me you''ll know that I posted all the pics of places where you can grind clearance to gain more overall steering. I have real good radius and all that but I''m still fighting the slop! I have to set my endpoint adjustments way past the point of straining the servo to get the wheels to hold a nice tight turn. I am on my third fUTABA 3305 and it''s starting to get annoying. If I adjust the endpoints so as to preserve the servo I lose about half of my turning radius. One of the worst places I can see is the servo saver. The whole thing actually pivots a little allowing for the whole steering assembly to slop back and forth. I think this is where a lot of the problem is. I don''t think tightening the servo saver will help because as I said the whole thing wiggles back and forth between the chassis and the upper deck. I will tear her down this weekend to try some of the ideas other guys have had that I have read about but I was wondering if anyone had noticed this allready and figured out a way to fix it? I am thinking maybe a shim under the saver so that when tightened up it will snug the servo saver down against the chassis?

Anyhow, I still really like my SS. I can take it to the track, and I may not be as nimble or light as the other truggys, but none of them can take the abuse that my Hellfire can take! "To finish first... first you must finish"!!!!! I am soon to have my own track in my back yard! It will be small but I can''t wait cause I''ll be able to make setup adjustments and know immediately how they effect handling and all that stuff. You can''t reallly do that just bashing around and the tracks around here are to far away just to go hang out at and mess with setup. It''s gonna be too kewl! Post u guys later!
Funny..I use the 3305 as a throttle servo..not enough for the steering, One of the other fixes is to use the Xray steering rack, it will give you equal steering left and right. Just FYI Caster Wheel adapters fit on a hellfire..and it makes the hellfire wider.

Hey,

Just bought a Hellfire SS yesterday, second hand. Have a few questions. I have taken my Hitec 5645mg digital servo from my Firestorm and put it in the Hellfire for the steering, should it be sufficient? I was unsure whether to leave it in my Firestorm and get an Ace 1015 as I've heard you need about about 200 ounce/inch, the 5645mg is about 168 I think.

Also, I've heard you need to shim the difs, however the previous owner has said he hasn't needed to, should I just keep it as it is or shim them?

I could be wrong but I think all the diff problems were with the RTR version. I definitely haven't had any diff trouble out of "my" SS.

If your only going to bash, the 5645 will do. But if racing you will need at least 200oz as the HF is a ***** to turn.
Hold the HF firmly on the ground and hold the spur gear with your finger and push the HF along the ground. If you hear clicking coming from the diffs they might be worn.
Personally, I would open up a diff anyway and see what wear there is on the pinion and crown. Its real easy to get the diff out on the HF, 5 min job.
I think the diffs in both the rtr and ss are the same. In most cases they do need alot of shimming to get right. Ive a slightly modded rtr. With the standard k 4.6 the diffs didnt give me too much trouble but as soon as i dropped in the os28 ive had continual problems with the diffs, even though i shim etc. The os is just too much for the HF diffs.
The ss is much much stronger than the rtr in most other areas.

Thanks for the info.

The guy before me ran a OS .30 and said he had no diff problems. I'm going to be running the 4.6HO.

I will take the diffs apart at some point as I'm a bit of a fiddler anyway.

As for my Servo, I will only be bashing really, if I do ever race, it won't be in the near future so I'll stick with the 5645mg.

Am looking at buying the Speed Tech carbon upper deck in the near future and the GH alum arms and hub set. Any info on these parts? They are for looks as much as anything as I have a Firestorm which I have alum/carbon parts for and want it to match. Are alum arms on the Hellfire a bad idea?

Hey Guys i was wondering how the Hellfire stacks up in the truggy class and how it is compared to a losi eight. I am thinking about buying one and racing it in the truggy class and i am wondering if that would be a good truck

Hi, everyone.
I have a small issuse to ask thank u.

I have a hellfire and are bashing together with a group of basher which all of them are playing with buggy.
Have try buzzy01 suggestion (thread post 1166). It improve alot on the steering, but is there anyway can be better? i try the toe out at type (front) but too much it not stable at striaght line. i try hard break n acc, diff at turn it can have smaller turn and faster. But the gear also wear out faster., due to the action done.

Is there anyway, a truggy can out run the buggy at turn ??? or maybe same.

thank.

Windowlicker, aluminium arms dont flex like the plastic and are heavier, ok for bashing.

Igotntc3, i dont think you can go much higher than 16t cb without starting to damage your shoes. The k4.6 is a torque engine not a high speed engine.

Pratt29j, the hellfire is not even close to an eight t except in price! Alot better truggies around for less $. I have one and sadly its not a race level truggy unless you can get it cheap and spend $ to keep it running and spend lots of time on getting it setup right.

Kyo crane, as you now no the hellfire isnt the best at turning and will not turn like a buggy. All you can do is the steering mods suggested in the forums, lighter diff oil in the rear helps to.

Today I recieved the used 4.6ho I got from ebay. I have a new piston and liner coming any day now. Anyway, the roof of the combustion chamber looks very brown, with slight pitting around the outer edge. Is this going to be a problem? I know you can clean off the brown residue but as for the pitting, will it make any difference to the engine? Should I try to polish them out at all or just leave it all alone? I could buy an entire new head, but I'd rather not spend any more money or it will end up costing the price of a new engine!

Windowlicker, post your question and a photo if you can in the engine section. Heaps of experts re engines there. Iam no expert on engine internals.
Kyo crane, all you can do is try different setups such as shock fluids and shock tower points, diff fluids, sway bar (i took my front sway bar off, seems to help swing the rear end around). Go to truggyracers.com, they have setups for the hellfire and lots of info.
