The cowl will be in two halves for easy removal without pulling the prop. This is made easy because the cowl flaps are not part of the cowl. I'll be adding an extra mounting bolt and changing the location of all of them. Two for each half.

This will make Moki maintenance very easy.

This is where I will be cutting it apart. The picture is of the top, and the bottom is the same. Scale size screws will be used in the CARF locations to screw it together. I'll also add a guide pin top and bottom, drilled into the Steel Powder in the nose of the cowl.
Hi Gary,

Have you had any issues with the split cowl, as we discussed some months ago ?
Thinking of vibrations working screws loose and lack of rigidity.

Mine is marked out ready for cutting (if I dare) !

Hello Steve. This is, as far as I know, the first attempt at this on this type. The plane is not completed yet, but will be in paint soon. So, no testing has been done yet, however, the alignment pins will have locking screws in them as the tail and wing sections have. I see no issues with keeping the sections in place in flight. I will also be adding some blue Loctite to the screws.

Here is the thing though, you want to glue the guide pin tubes in the cowl BEFORE you cut it apart. This insures that the two halves will be in perfect alignment. I will be going back to this part of the build soon and I'll add some more pictures of the finished cowl and how it all works.

My reason was two fold for this mod. First, not having to pull the prop to service, adjust and test run the Moki, and second, in static, to display both the completed look from one side and that big beautiful radial from the other.

Gary, is it safe to assume that you are doing this mod on my cowl?? :-)

Yep. :-)

I'm confident in the design. I gave this a lot of thought.

I understand the concerns and well know how we have worked at keeping our cowls tight over the years. I've addressed this in the way it is all held together. Plus, it has (4) mounting bolts in the cowl flap ring, two each side, and a seat in the back to hold it in place and virtually eliminate movement from vibration.

I think I will do another series of posts on the process of installing the flaps and cowl, including this mod. I have had several PMs lately on the subject.

This aircraft continues to find new builders and owners. My brother and I will continue to work on mods and improvements as long as the interest is there. So far, it is.

Default wing pictures

here are some progress pictures of the wing systems.

Sorry. new computer and it looks like I clicked something i didn't need to.

You can see the electric gear control box (top left), the gun system control box (top right), the control valve for the air gear doors (left), and the ''equalizers" for the ailerons and flaps (center).

This is all in the opening on the top of the wing.

The battery for the gear will mount to the spar, seen at the top of the picture.

The spot to the right of the equalizers would be the control box for the wing, however, this plane has the 'plug in wings'.

Here is what is in the bottom hatch.

On this board is the air gauge, gear arming switch, gun arming switch, and air fill valve. The air system for the main gear doors is completely housed in the wing, so no disconnects,

This board unlocks and swings down facing forward for easy service. This also exposes the batteries for the gun system, and access to the load speakers for same.

Spring system to open doors. Easy to install and adjust, both for tension and stop.

In regards to the sectioning of the 4 rear gear doors, the front ones need to be 9 1/4" long. This will give to the scale look. The tail wheel cut out should be entirely in the front doors.

The air exits numerous places in the rear of the wing.

The CARF deserves these details IMO.

Connections between panels. Wires for the lights, ailerons, guns, and flaps.

Please note, this is the plug-in version.

Did you find that the system you used previously (with the ball links/rigid connections to the tail gear) didn't work too well, as I fancied giving that a go). - See post 682 for those who haven't seen the earlier version

Your new method looks a little more complex to install/set up - plus it looks like you have no chance of adjustment once the pull-pull wires are crimped ??

Keep posting !!

Hello Steve. Actually, it is just the opposite. The new system is very easy to install and adjust. MUCH easier than the one with ball links. I did NOT need to learn a new language to install this one. :-)

As for the cables, I had planned to use a small spring in the system so I could put some tension on the cable to insure it stays tight, but I deemed this unnecessary. I have a couple more videos to post but am having a little trouble with them. I have uploaded one 3 times and it keeps rejecting it.

More on this subject to come.
