With a windmilling prop up front, you don't need flaps. With the residual thrust of a turbine at idle, it will float right by you on landing without a means of creating additional drag, such as flaps.

Hey Casey,

I make sure that my CoG is FORWARD of 160mm or 6 1/4" from the front of wing (measured at the wing root). So I have that position marked on the fuse and when I put the Li-po's in, I always try and make sure that it's 5-10mm forward of that mark. Behind that it's a lot of fun....[X(]. The CoG can change on my model because mine is electric powered and I use different packs in her depending on what I have available at the time. There is a fair bit of size difference between the 1/6 and 1/4 scale ones in person trust me

Rcguy59, I really love komets too!!! My Komet at the field is totally the opposite! I probably get the most comments and questions about my komet that I do about any of my other warbirds. Once set up right, Me-163 are one of the easiest and sweetest flying models you can get. takeoff can sometimes be a little entertaining, but once airborne, it's great. I would love to see a conversion of the Saitta kit as I have been toying with the same concept for a fair few months ago now. Yeah Those Augmentor pipes are pretty expensive from wren (add the cost of the pipe on again to ship it[X(]) but they say it does at 5-10% more thrust. I also had never heard of the conversion kit for the saitta kit until I somehow got in contact with Joe a few months ago.

Hey Guys,

If you need info for paint and detailing your ME-163's here is the site that I used when doing mine.

Click on each one of the links to see extensive detail on each of the 163's listed or other resources.

It's amazing how many time pictures are credited as being a certain 163 only to be shown that some of the scheme we've come to know are the result of 163's being reassembled after being captured with the bits of different aircraft. This site notes those variations and if you track things through you can reconstruct the correct scheme.

As near as I can tell the 163 I modeled wore at least 3 schemes. I chose the scheme I wanted and corrected the errors in how it had been represented. I ended up with a true representation of Yellow "25" at one point in it's life as it's appearance changed. It's the scheme I was wanting to enjoy seeing as it flys.

What I was trying to get at is this design has so much lift to weight, that flaps are not needed for landing at all.....regardless of powerplant. While a windmilling prop does add a bit of drag......so does air intakes large enough to feed a turbine. If you float on by with your turbine at idle.....you just need to throttle down sooner or use a kill switch to stop fuel flow. Your turbine can still be turning by electric means for the cool down. But.....I was not referring to the larger saitta kits or others to begin with....I mentioned the flyboys version by name and was refering to that planes characteristics.
If you have those larger kits, by all means add flaps during the build.

I also was never saying flaps arent good. I love flaps....but this plane is a big kyte with power....no matter what size

I agree with you... sort of. Flaps add lift as well as drag. Therefore, with flaps, one can land slower. And the additional drag offsets the residual thrust. Scale or not, I want the option of a go-around in the event of a bad approach, so I really don't want to shut the turbine down prior to landing. As regards the Flyboy version, You are correct. It doesn't need flaps.

to clairify, i should have said that when I was referring to the size difference, I had really only looked at the first of the two pics you posted when the Flyboys was sitting in frount of the JS kit...

Well, I called Joe Saitta the other night and exchanged emails since. Not being one to reinvent the wheel, I'm going to order his turbine conversion kit. $85.00, shipped. He calls for a 31" tailpipe and recommends Tamjets as a source. Tam would have been my first choice anyway. The pipe I have is 26" long. Using my pipe would move the turbine far enough aft to require a BUNCH of nose-weight. Joe says his has NO nose-weight with a JetCat P-60. My SuperBee is about the same weight, so I should be fine. I'll order the kit in a few weeks and I'll start a new thread in the jet forum at that point. There aren't any turbine powered Komets in this neck of the woods, at least that I know of, so it should be interesting. I might even drag out my Flyboy Komet and start flying it again, since it's been awhile.

Maybe I can just have him send me the drawings for the parts and I can cut them out here instead of paying all that money to ship some plywood all over the world, when we have plenty of it here.

Sorry for the late response.... Somehow I missed your post. You can use gorilla glue. Be careful with its application... as you really don't need much. Block up the wings so they can't move, apply the glue, then use magazines to hold down the skin. This gives a very even application of the weight. After the glue has set, remove the magazines. Flip the wings, block them up( making sure you're blocking is in the same place on both wings), repeat the process for lower skins. I placed the servo's inside the wings at this point. Then glass the leading edge, and you're done!

Added a simple (removable) antenna mast, and gave the Me-163 a clearcoat of acryl matt.

I am still astonished at how well this thing flies It's quite popular at the field, I guess it's the rather unusual design & shape.

The most common question I get : "Where's the rocket?"

I have a fixer upper that dorked on a dolley takeoff. Sheared the right wing, some fiberglass damage to the front end and rudder post pulled out and needs a new canopy, which you should be able to locate. It has the engine, tuned pipe, dolley, all servos and receiver, but not the fixed gear. It is very nicely detailed, and would only take a few weeks to get back to flying condition. I plan to repair it someday. I will sell it for $150 as it sits. Needs repaired, but a lot less work than building from scratch. PM me if interested/more details.
