10.5lbs?? That sounds really good, what glass did you use?

I decided to glass mine, whats the point in spending all this time and using non-scale looking monokote at the end.

But anyways im back on the wing, need to frame the right wing and build the split flaps next, they look like ther going to be a pain

I agree,
Why monokote a warbird...The glass is 0.7oz, and I am very careful to squeeze out any
extra resin and go very light on fillers. and things like bondo, that could add weight.
Also, I recognized that short nose plus long tail equals putting everything behind the CG on
a diet...

Looks good, keep your momentum, the flaps aren't bad, they just sound that way in the
instructions. My girlfriend built my flaps for me, while I watched....

That's true, why not?
Great job with that bird...I myself after around 20 or so monokoted aircraft
felt like trying glass....that's all.

Why not?
Because no matter how nice it is to begin with Monokote always starts to wrinkle and sag after a while. Fiberglass never wrinkles or sags! Just my .02 cents of course.

To each their own Hellcat, I'm sure you're Sea Fury looks as good in person as it does in the pics. However, I will back up my opinion with the observation that only about 1 in 100 Scale Masters or Top Gun entrants are covered with an iron on plastic. I understand that not everyone is building to compete, but most of those that are choose to finish their models with alternative materials. Please don't think I'm trying to degrade Monokote users, I've used my share of it and will continue to for certain subjects.

Hellcat, I like the spinner size on your bird. Most people have one size smaller than scale because the engine overheats with a big cone up front. How did you resolve the cooling?

Is it just me or does this plane make it look like the brits were really impressed by the focke wulf.

I know it was an old post, but I'm new here, researching possibly building this plane (being a Canadian and seeing the nice Mapleleaf on the kit box *grin*) and nobody answered this.

The reason it looks like the brits were really impressed with the FW with this plane is because an German pilot accidentally landed a FW at a British airbase during the war, and the design for this plane was influenced by things they learned from studying a FW that was in perfect condition.

Its a gorgeous plane, nice to see some threads about it. When I get a little more confident (and a little more room), I'm definately looking at building one.

Cheers,
Graham

I just started building the TF Sea Fury and I have the Century Jet scale retracts. I am wondering if there is anybody out there that has installed them. It appears to me that the instruction book shows the struts installed backwards. The retract rails are double width at the back instead of the front. This is certainlly not a huge problem but I am sure glad I found it before building the wing.

Just an update on the CJM scale retract installation. I called Century Jet and posted to them the way I felt the retracts should be installed . Bruce Sanders agreed that my conclusion was correct and that TF had shown the struts installed in reverse. I called TF and at first, they insisted that it was done right but another phone call to a different person who agreed with my conclusions. TF is going to correct the problem. It is amazing to me that I am the only person to note the discrepancy and to call it to thier attention.

as i am just starting to build my Sea Furythis has been a fantastic thread to fall upon, i have a couple of quick questions i would like to ask thoise of you who have finished and flown your models, ive been told its bad practise to mount engines inverted, as the planes show it, (if i have a choice i always side mount) i have a ASP 120fs which will be going in, what are peoples experience with engine mounting in this model?
On finishing, unless swayed otherwise i intend to glass and poly-c the model, and seeing the split flaps on this posting it looks a must! which leads me to think how do you finish the inside of the flaps and the inner surface of the lower wing? do you still glass them or finishing then slightly differently?
thanks in advance for any help

Hal I finally posted some pics did you see them ?

Graham , the e-bay version comes with the symbol of your country , howveer if my two sons had there way they would tell me that the real Canadian symbol is tow hockey sticks crossed or the mapel leaf --- they love hockey and Canada !!!If you dont want to build one you can get a ARF on e-bay to toy around with until you get the confidence to build the Top Flight .

Cal - I dont have a warbird that does not have an inverted engine . Pay attention to the carb and how it lines up with the tank , you can always add a pump if you run into problems

They were told several years ago when I built mine, but did nothing about it. So I guess they are finally going to fix the problem.

Hi Calvinf
My engine(os120) runs fine inverted only had one problem i took the rocker cover off when it nosed over on landing, regarding the wheel wells i glassed inside to reinforce the top sheeting and inside the flaps i put a coat of epoxy to seal the wood before painting
regards Tony

Can anyone tell me where the CG is on their Sea Fury, I have mine as listed in the manual and I'm having a heck of a time trying to keep mine from nosing over on takeoff.

Hi rc sport
My cg is set the same as the manual 111mm from the leading edge, not from the front of the radiators, do you have enough up elevator to keep the tail down until you have enough speed? what size wheels do you have and are you flying off grass?

I set my CG according to the manual with the mains extended, 4 3/8" from the leading edge, not from the radiators. I have increased the high rate throws for the elevator. My wheels are 4" and yes I do fly off grass. I have an RCV 91sp for power and I think it doesn't have enough poop to get it up to speed quickly. Once it's in the air it flies great.

Check your engine thrust. Mine flew great then after a flap problem causing a slow roll into the ground, I had to rebuild the firewall. It began to give me fits on takeoffs and landings. I re-checked the down thrust and added a couple degrees back in and all is well again.

I don't think that's the issue with mine, I had to trim quite a bit of down elevator in flight. I think my issue may be not enough power and inexperience flying a warbird.

Hi rc sport
If its easy enough to do try setting the cg with wheels up, thats how i did mine its seems ok, like yours mine needed a lot of down trim but it could be just coincidence. If you built it right the thrust line should be ok, try going to a slightly smaller prop to give a bit more get up and go, what does it wheigh, mines 13.5 lbs but then i have a 120 pumper stuck on the front

I'm at 12lbs 8oz. I was told my RCV 91sp would have enough power but now I'm second guessing my decision. I have an Enya 120R that I may swap out and save the RCV for another project.

Hi ya
At that wheight i think you would do well to fit the 120, if it turns out to be overpowered you can always throttle back a bit. what scheme have you finished it with? do you have any photos you could post?
