Black Drape ,
Very nice looking Hellcat. Looking to get my first ARF Warbird for a winter project. I really like the F8F Bearcat and the F6F Hellcat. Which one flys better? I'm no stranger to giant scale planes but have never owned or for that matter flown a warbird. I've been looking at the ESM warbirds for a 26-30cc gasser.

RE: CMP Hellcat
Hey Guys
I haven't flown it yet, I only have one run on the engine. Our flying season is about over for this year so probably won't get a chance to fly it till next spring. I am currently putting an ESM BF110 together. Can't say that I am overly impressed with the kit. It has a ton of pieces missing, most of which I was able to make myself, but some I will have to call on. Pretty much everyone in this thread seems to think the Hellcat flies well, and there some great videos of the guys fling it. I haven't heard much about the ESM Models yet.

Black Drape, You did a great job on your Hellcat. Now that is some motivation to get this project completed and not sit on the workbench all winter. Those are some great pics of your plane and that great looking flying field. Keep those pics coming guys. Capt. Winters

RE: CMP Hellcat
You can PM John ( nitrostaff1 ) over on the Nitroplanes support forums, but if that is the extent of the damage, it is not worth doing this.
Instead fix the broken former with epoxy, and paint over the chipped area. It will be quicker and easier than trying to deal with a replacement.

RE: CMP Hellcat
Hey Guys, I am ready to glass my wing, but do not have the retracts. I was going to go for the Lado's but they are no longer an option as they are history. I am back to Seirra's retracts but am short on funds to purchase them at this time. Question 1, Anyone out there have a new pair they would be willing to trade for. I have several new in box arfs or complete planes. question 2 Do they drop in, or does the wing need to be modified for them to fit. I helped a good friend of mine, user name Canfieldnosedive put some in his plane acouple of years ago, pics on this thread, but for the life of me I can not remember, Huh, 48 years old and I'm having a senior moment. Ha Ha Any help out there? Thank you Capt. Winters

RE: CMP Hellcat
Hi Randy, I was planning on beefing up the retract area when I started to install the retracts. I'm at a stand still with this plane not having the retracts on hand. Thanks to this great economy money is tight, you know. I would still like to get the wing glassed and detailed this winter, would you be willing to trade phone numbers so that we could talk when I'm working on the plane. If so, give me a PM. If not I would still appreciate the help and measurements, Thank you David, AKA Capt. Winters

RE: CMP Hellcat
What's the biggest gasser you guys have installed in the CMP hellcat? I have a Fuji 43cc in my Willhobby FW190 and love the way that thing flies with authority, yet slow down plenty with full flaps for landing. My FW was putt putt with the Fuji 32cc EI motor. I have a DLE 30 heading my way from China, just a bit concerned that it may not be enough power to hit 80-90 mph. I like to fly my warbirds fast. Just wondering about how strong the CMP Hellcat airframe is to handle big gasser, and will it handle the weight up front? Please share your experience.

Hay Bryant50,
Good luck getting anything out of Nitro Planes. Their customer service sucks hind wind...serious hind wind.
I have a set of Troy Built F6F retracts coming to me for my CMP Hellcat. Troy Built Models Hellcat has a 72" wing span and CMP has 70" so these should do the trick. I did have a set of Lado rotating retracts, but a buddy in my club had needed them (he sent his into Lado for repair and never got them back)...and I also felt that the Lado's weren't strong enough for the weight of this model. I plan on going with a twin Fox 1.20...that is if I can get the Fox to run well enough for me. If not, then I may go with a small gas engine.
What size gas engine would you guys recomend and has anyone installed a small gas engine into this kit ?
Thanks...
Soft Landings Always,
Bobby of Maui

RE: CMP Hellcat
Hi All,
I'm in the process of fitting a converted Ryobi 31cc gasser to the Hellcat. I got the idea from WarbirdMadMan in this thread. He started back around post 2127 and has some nice installation photos at post 2165.
Cheers,
Chilli

Hi Chilli,
Thanks for the information...and it's still "work in progress" on deciding what engine to power this model with. Please do post pictures of your engine mod to this airframe.
I did receive my "Troy Built" F6F retracts today. The quality of the wheels and struts are of first quality-wheel dia. is 4". I'm still open to see how the air operated rotaters are, but the kit included everything you need to install the retracts into a model.
I will start on my wing first and I want to fit the landing gear, modify the flaps to be more scale and repaint the wings. Then install a retractable tail wheel into the fuse and beef up the tail section a bit.
Would a G38-lightened, with electronic ignition be to much power for this model ? Is the Solo 3-prop hub to big a scale for this size airframe, or would it work ok here ?
I've enclosed a few pictures of the "Troy Built" F6F retracts.

Yes indeed, it has been to long my long lost flying buddie, Jamie says you sent an e-mail so I will check that out as well. How is all that snow going? I have decided to sell some of my hanger planes, so let your club know if any of them are looking for some nice warbirds. I have an ad in the buy and sell market place. You need to put up a pic. of your hell cat again, so the new guys can have a look. I will finish this in an e-mail Dude, so talk to you soon. Your friend, David
