RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Ok so it's just a matter of taste. Thanks folks.
Well I'm going to start glassing today using Westsystems and I'll post some pictures of that if you like. I'm going to finish the plane in Latex I think.
I've not used it, but is sounds like a good way to go or Warbirds Colors. I'm wondering if I need to clear it ? From what i have heard it take's at least a month for it to comletely dry but I would imagine that also depends on how much a guy applies. Any thoughs are welcome.
I need to get hold of B&B and order thethrottle adapter they have and install that on the g62. Lets see, oh yea I need to get a fail safe system and I'm going to use the optiglow system from 42Percent Products now that I am a dealer for thier items. Hint Hint.
(hope I don't get in trouble for that)
Later Dudes and happy Saint Patricks Day!

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I got the wing glassed. I got a few wrinkles on the bottom side of the wing but not so bad that it can't be fixed. I didn't thin the epoxy and I wasn't being patient enough. If I do it again I'll do the bottom of the wing with 2 pieces of cloth overlapped in the middle rather than one full piece. It willconform easier to the valleys.I added 5% of alcohol to my mix for the top of the wing and it went on much better or I should say it was easier to work with. I used 1.3oz cloth because I had it on hand. I used about 300grams of epoxy to do the wing. Some of that was removed once I spread it out so I'm not sure what the exact amount on the wing is but I'm not going to worry about it. I'm going to have to add weight to the nose anyway. This glass is much easier to use than the 3/4oz.
If anyone is interested I used E-Glass. NOT the regular cloth. It does not unravel like the regular cloth and the price difference is not that much more. I purchased it from ACP Composites.www.acpsales.com they have everything and thier prices and service are excellent. Talk to Amanda and tell her Randy from Canadasent you. Maybe you'll get a better deal. Phone: 925-443-1471

My doors are 2.8 wide and 4,2 long, But a lot depends on ware you reposition the ribbs to and what size wheel you will be using I have the robart retracts as called out in the manual you can get the strok from the tech sheet on robarts web site, I would sugest yo give your self a minimum of 1/4 depending on how you plan on operating the doors and hinges to be used.
Hope this helps

With 5 inch wheelsyou will have to make sure you mount the gear frame as far fwd as posible as I had to grind off about 3/32 the shaft the slides in the ball to keep punching through the upper surface, and you may have to make longer mounting rails, I also had to trim the raild down about 3/32 to get the screws to clear the inside of the lower surface, I think there are pic's of this back in the thread maybe page 75 and up also it you don;t know there is an endex in post one that may will help you
cheers Bob T

Would the same mods be necessary for the 4 3/4 '' aerotech wheels?

Yes. The retracts need to be positioned as far forward as possible to get better ground handling and be more to scale regardless of wheels. There is retract mods no matter how you mount it but moving the gear forward is forcing some of the changes. 4.75" aerotech wheels should fit from what I have read here.

They fit. But it's tight...I couldn't see myself trying to squeeze even another 1/8" out of it to put in 5" wheels when I put mine in there.

Yea lets see some of the Corsair builds you other guys are working on.
Yea lets see some of the Corsair builds you other guys are working on.
This is my first build in 17 years. Built a couple of high wing kits and a Hots way back when for my 12 yr old so he could fly.
Now that I have Grandkids, this one is for me. (H__l, if I don't do it now; When?)
Always wanted a Corsair, my friends fly some cool Meisters, a Dauntless, a 12 foot B-17 and more.
Just because I can barely fly and my building skills are "suspect" means to me that it's about time to do it.
Here is my first attempt at a warbird with the Top Flight Giant Corsair. It will be built real close to plans (I hope). Feel free to join in as I have been lurking for months.
I can only get an hour here and there, so don't think I've quit. (You will see the fire if it gets that bad LOL)
I admire a lot of the "Extras many of you do, but right now I want to build and complete and fly!
Hoping my pic is here???????????

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
On to the elevators. This is going much better than I thought. The smell of sawdust, the feel of it all over my sweating body, stuck in my hair and eyes.
I forgot how much fun it is to build on a outdoor patio in Southern Florida with the temp at about 75 and the humidity at pretty close to 300%.
I can't wait till it warms up this summer. There is a pool ten feet behing my building table. A nice ring of balsa dust only take two hours to clean off!
Got a little carried away with the sanding on the bottom of the elevators as they are a little to straight vrs curved.
But who can see the imperfections better than the builder. (Someone else who built the same thing I'll bet.)
The top of the elevators are fine (Says me).
So far about 9 1/2 hours
