Default RE: Top Flite P-47D Thunderbolt ARF .60-.91: Building & Mods

Question for you guys - I'm at the point where I'm preparing to do the dummy radial install in the cowl and the directions call for epoxy mixed with microballoons. Is this necessary, or can I just use straight epoxy? If it's really necessary, are there any substitutes for microballoons? I'm having a hard time finding them locally, and I'd rather not have to wait for online delivery if I don't have to.

Thanks. -Brian

It's not totally nessasary to use the balloons, you can use epoxy with some cloth to reinforce it, but just epoxy might break loos depending on your motor.

7Kings,

I tack the dummy engine with CA at several points and once secured, I then use clear RTV silicon to permanently attach. Much more flexible than epoxy and vibration resistant.

[8D]I didn´t used microballoons. Just some tack ciano points to alineate between the cowling, dummy engine and motor. Once everything was aligned y used 30 minutes epoxy with some strips of glass cloth.

I finished the wing today, got the hinge lines all working great. On the ailerons I ended up cutting the TE of the wing at the aileron a 1/4". Doing the CF pocket pushes the control surface out a 1/4" turned out really nice. The flaps came out even better then I thought. I cut the triangle TE out and replaced it with the 6 mill CF. I was able to get a much better resemblance of the fowler flap then the kit offers, I used SunDevilPilots drill block jig to drill the hinge points in, worked great, thanks SunDevilpPlot. I also started to do the covering. I'm going with an aluminum finish on this one.

I fitted the cowl to make adjustments to the dummy radial. got the aluminum on the cowl flaps. I will do weatherin when the intier plane is covered.

The stab is completed and ready to glue in. I used 1/64 birch ply to make the tip pockets.

The wing is complete as far as the hinge pocket goes. I cut ¼" back to allow for the CF pocket.

More ailerons and flaps.
On the flaps I cut out the triangle at the TE and replaced it with the CF TE. I also added material to the face of the flap to make it more scale like and it fits better this way with the fowler flap.

I might have missed it but is anyone using a DLE20 in this plane? That's what I'm doing and just wanted to check if I had missed part of the thread or had a mind freeze.

OOPS.............forget it!! I see I've already addressed this here...........a mind is a terrible thing to lose............[&o]

Finally RTC,
I did some tweaking before I started to cover this bird.I hollowed out the inside of the ruder for the elevator torque rod to have free movement at all deflected positions. I soldered an arm onto the elevator torque rod. The one shown is a test. I could not break it loose so it should hold.

Default RE: Top Flite P-47D Thunderbolt ARF .60-.91: Building & Mods

I made up my own vents for the fuselage. I don’t want to use the plastic ones.
I have been doing a lot of fine tuning. I added some more ply to the ruder pocket. This also acts as a stop and pivot point for the elevator toque rod.

I cut out the hidden hatch and mine was glued in and was a pain to get out. I ended up removing the sheathing to get to the frame and cut it out. I made a new one that fits nice and tight. TF dropped the ball on this one. They go through the trouble of building and designing a battery hatch, and then they glue it in. They could have easily built it and just covered it. If you wanted to use it you would just cut the covering loos. So fare if this was an ARF, it would be all screwed up. Luckily I can build!

I also built in the fine that was added to the later versions of the bubble fuselage. The round fuselage and bubble canopy was built after the razor to give greater visibility. Resulting in a less stable plane, so most of the fins were added in the field.

I started covering the wing. I glassed the center section for strength.
I am using the plastic vents at the cowl; I cut them down and added balsa to them so I can glue them to the fuse. I will paint them during detailing.

ado monty, not sure where you are having trouble with the tank, fallow the instructions and you should be good. If you have done a fuel set up before then you know what to do, if not then do some research on how to set up a two clunk tank. Most guys put the the tank as close to the CG as they can as to not affect the way the plane flues with fuel, or with out. From what I remember when I did mine it fit right in, you may need to glue in some light balsa blocks to keep it in place, then use a rubber band or Velcro to hold it in place. Hope that helps!

Has anyone recently purchased any of the rcskylite struts? If so, what was your delivery time? I have a set on order, and the status hasn't changed from "Awaiting Fulfillment" for almost a week. I know they're based out of Hong Kong, but I'm just wondering what sort of timeline I'm looking at (I'm anxious to get this bird out to the field...).

Thanks

Default RE: Top Flite P-47D Thunderbolt ARF .60-.91: Building & Mods

I sold mine over the weekend
I know I'll miss that little guy, but I pre ordered the hanger 9 giant scale P-47 which I have high hopes for

I'll do a thread on the electronic conversion of the hanger 9 when it shows up

Best regards.
Manolo.
