The elevator dropped.

1. Are you saying the elevator detached from the aircraft in flight?
2. Are you saying the plane had elevator flutter and caused the failure?
3. Was it a failed elevator control horn, or servo?
4. If servo, what servos were you using?
What will you change in the next build to prevent this from happening again?
All of the details you can provide are very useful to me and other CARF Spitfire builders.
Thanks, and sorry for your loss of such a fine looking airplane.

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
I have just had the pleasure of testing my Carf Spitfire this weekend just gone. Not ideal conditions here in the UK, but I was too excited not too
Powered by an Evolution 80 using a slightly modified eve muffler. 27x10 prop. Lado custom made electric retracts and Sierra legs. JR servos and Powerbox competition running through a JR 12 ch RX.
Built by Paul Metcalf, and paired by Ray Habgood. This is the 4th composite 1/4 scale Spitfire that I have owned ( 2 Fibre classics with petrol, 1 FC with Turbo prop and then a custom kit Mk1 with electric ) and this is by far the best flying of the lot. The Electric gear is working out a treat ( So smooth and adjustable ) and the Evo 80 is perfect power.
I know the colour may not be to everyones liking, but I Really wanted a change from yet another camp Spitfire, plus my daughter loves it as its her initials as the reg, and her birthday as the serial number.

Cheers, and not too worried about it not being 1/4 as its far far from scale! ( Wrong colour, false serial number, false nose art, false registration etc etc) Someone even told me that it had the incorrect elevators for the rudder fitted I told him that he would have a fit if he saw that the pilot actually had the wrong number of lace spacings in his boots for the correct RAF used at the time [&:] )

Ali,
I like the reasoning behind your Spitfire. I am the same way with my kids. Things like this go along way with Dads and their youngsters. Great idea!
How do you think a DLE-55, or DA-50 would fly the Spitfire?
What is the weight of your bird?
I have a 28 pound Byron P-40 which flies well with a DA-50.

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
Any good?
Sorry, But I have not put it on scales as yet. It feels and flies damn light.. Thats despite 4 lbs of church roof ( Lead) up front. This one was built with little, to no consideration of weight. Full length weighty pilot. Full depth pilot. heavy tail wheel, armoured canopy, full depth cockpit with seat and details etc.. even a rear access hatch working as a switch and charge point. I think if you were building it with a DA 50 and considerate not to put anything behind the centre of gravity, and used heavy batteries up front it would be a good few punt lighter.
Even at the flying weight I am at, the 80 Evo has bags too much power for scale. So a 50 or 55 will be cock on ( Thats good BTW )

Thanks Sonnich.
Sorry no video as yet. We have a flying meeting just after Christmas, I am sure someone there will be able to take some. I will post it when I get it!
Nice Spit Didiwatt!

Thanks for the pic of the cowl off. I'm pretty impressed with the level of detail in the finish. The black wash really shows up all the rivets on the surface. Did you have any issue with the fit of the struts / retracts with the cut outs? I really love the colour scheme!!!

Hi Jeremy,
No worries. Yes the detail does come up well with a bit of paint. We replaced the raised rivets around the nose section from stock. On my one the composite fasteners were sanded down and a smaller screw wound in place. My painter sanded his flat and fitted Mick Reeves vinyl fasteners, and I have to say his look better [:@]
Yes. My gear did need a bit of juggling in order to fit.
Glad you like the colour scheme. I didn't think many people would.

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
Hi I am building a Comp arf spit with a 3w 85xi for the motor. Can anyone tell me if i should mount the motor with right thrust or just put it directly to the firewall centerline. When i mount centerline it appears as if the motor have left thrust with the cowl on. Also I have a keleo creations exhaust i'm not sure if i want to use. Wondering if it will be a significant loss of power.

Can not answer your question on the thrust right now. If I get a chance to check alignment of my firewall tomorrow I will let you know, but when I set the fuselage on the firewall vertically it appears there is no offset for thrust.
As for the CARF Spitfire Keleo exhaust, don’t know, but I flew my friends CARF P-51 with a DA-85 and the Keleo exhaust, and it had no sign of power loss. As a matter of fact I had to reduce the power to ½ throttle to slow the plane for a scale flight appearance. At ¾ throttle it was hauling, and the take off power was surprisingly ½ throttle.
We did have the ceramic coating and it did reduce the heat output of the can greatly.
I hope this helps.

RE: Comp ARF Spitfire build
Hi Everyone
12 months ago, I bought my husband Richard the CARF spitfire for Xmas. Long story short, a year later here are the results in photos, video to follow soon.
Summary – powered by a Hacker A-100 and Spin 170 ESC, turning an APC 22 x 10, driven by 48 x A123 batteries giving a 40V 9.2Ah system producing 3000 watts. AUW 38lb with an 8 minute flight and 15-20 minute recharge.
Basically the best flying plane Richard has ever flown in over 30 years and so much power it’s embarassing!
Pilot was a prototype from ProperLittlePeople.com ( http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_95...18/key_/tm.htm ) the early version so a little worse for wear now with scratches! The home made spinner weighs in at 48grams.
It’s so light in the air despite it’s AUW that I have even looped and rolled it. Magic! It was never intended as a scale masterpiece but has more than proven the power train for future projects.
We can recommend it to anyone.
Happy flying
Patti
