RE: NEW Top Flight P-40??? 1/5 scale
Thanks guys, I think it took me more time to decal, paneline, airbrush and clearcoat than it did to assemble airplane.
Capt G. I place the ignition switch just as permanual and the receiver switch under the cowling in front of the wing area. Ignition switch is camo well with some weathering.
Oh I did not need any ballast to balance out the plane.

G'day Dave,
Nice weathering on the P-40, what pilot did you use please? Also I'd like to know if you and any other modellers could tell me what your finished weight (less fuel) is please? Cheers,
Dave

the pilot I used was "Ben Cole" fullfigure pilot which I believe Dragon pilots make it. If I can remember the bird came out right at 24lbs.

It is a very good flying airplane. On my maidnen I was doing some IMAC to the teasing of the other pilots at the field. It really hold a line well!

I'm using the CG as per plans and the high rate on the surfaces with about 25% expo. I'm comfortable with this set-up for smooth but positive control response and still stable enough to fly a long low straight line.

RE: NEW Top Flight P-40??? 1/5 scale
So I just opened the box from the big mail order place and took out the recommended retarcts for my P-40. Is it just me or does anybody else think these things are poorly designed and made? The after thought uplock is a joke and I don't know how it will function properly. Has anyone sucessfully installed Sierra Giant gear into this model and if so how much modification must be done to the wing?

During a preflight (after having flown the model a dozen times or so) one of the "uplocks" stuck and prevented the gear from coming down. Rather than troubleshoot them Isimply disabled both - that feature is not worth the risk of the gear not operating in flight. I would suggest taking a careful look at it.

Not only that but they don't finish any of the edges and there are places to cut your hands on them. The after thought uplock is a joke and I don't know how it will function properly. I had to sand a small groove for the up locking mechanism to move freely. Also did some very minor shimming on one side if the gear mounts on one of the gear to make sure it centered in the wheel well. No problems with the locks either up or down.

Thanks again for the inputs. Another question: are you guys slowing the gear down and sequencing them (scale like) operation? I wondered if that will have an effect on positive locking up/down?

I slowed both up and down sequence. Not so slow as to be scale, but enough to keep them from slamming either direction ... about 1.5 to 2 seconds either way.

RE: NEW Top Flight P-40??? 1/5 scale
The kit and all of the accessories arrived from Tower. The box looks good, no damage in shipping. However there is a ding on the fuse right on top of the nose just aft of the cowl. Some kind of impact damge that cracked the sheeting. Tower quickly sent a replacement. This was left at the front door by the shipper we all know (the one that loves Brown) and the box looked like it was in a fight! There was a large hole punched through one of the FRAGILE stickers and other wrinkles in the box. The only damage to the fuse was at the corner of the wing/ fuse fillet. The balsa is chipped and Monocote torn. So I will decide which of the two I want to fix and send the other back. Overall Top Flite has really done a great job on this ARF. As expected there are some wrinkles in the covering but I will be able to get it shrunk down. I was suprised to see a decent instrument panel, not just a decal. As previously mentioned I bought the Robarts and will use them as well as the DLE 55. Just like everyone else I wish we could get a 3 bladed spinner/prop combination.

Bolts loosening on muffler...
Have you considered trying different HIGH quality bolts??
Some of the China bolts are horrible...
And sometimes the American metric size can differ from the rest of the NORMAL "metric" world....
I would pick up some run of mull lock nuts.... They bite VERY well in ALum....
I remember when evolution engines had the same issue with there 45gx engine, and the Evolution muffler bolts....
The would keep loosening, untill a replacent set was used, and you guessed it,,, NO more loosening.. Problem solved..
Keep us informed...

Looks like a great flying site. Which one do you use? I lived in Orlando for some time at a place called RC World where we had a fantastic field. I am in WA state now and really miss the long flying season there in FL. I hope to retire and move back some day. Be sure to stop into Bob's Hobby Center and say hello to Steve Thomas. It is the best shop in Central FL and Steve is very helpful.

Mike
