RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Wouldn't one of these new Saito radials be nice?
84cc Gas power, or even the 33cc may be enough if it was built nice and light?

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
84 cc....hmmmm
If I take the FG-57's two cylinders and divide by two, I get 57 / 2 = 28.5 cc
If I multiply 28.5 cc with 3 I get .... 84cc and then some.....
This tells me that most likely, they use the same cylinders for the 84cc radial, as for the FG-57.
And many of us have proven that the FG-57 is strong enough for the ESM 50cc Corsair, so, I think
the conclusion must be that the 84cc radial is perfect for this plane, and you dont have to build light at all?

Light? Mine weighs a ton. Lands slow, goes like stink.. In fact it goes so well I blew the canopy off today! Pox! Now I have to do another one. So, guys, make sure you have a latch or screw to lock the canopy closed.

Looks great Stoat.
I got a tracking number this morning, apparently Tomas at VQ took the time from his vacation and got mine shipped out yesterday I appreciate him doing that.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
The radial makes the difference between a show stopper and all of the other Warbirds on the line,. I have a Saito 450R in my Corsair, and now that it is well broke in, it is a stump puller. On take off, I get it rolling good with tail wheel down, when the speed is just right, I kick it in the pants and the prop blast instantly lifts the tail. Applying right rudder to counteract the torque, the Corsair quickly attains airspeed, but wait, got to speed by the spectators with wheels floating along the top of the grass and gently, oh gently pull back on the stick. She lifts off timidly, but that is a rouse. The advance on the elevator rotates the Corsair into a 45 degree climb without deceleration. She quickly attains alltitude, right bank and level off. The roar of that radial as it unwinds is worth every red cent I spent to install it. And no lead up front, not one ounce!

Hey stoat
Was it you or nudger that had the custom exhaust? I'm trying to put one together but I'm having an issue trying to get the fitting sizes since it's metric. For the cylinder exhaust, is it 14 or 15mm?
I want to come straight off the cylinder into the fuselage, turn 90 degrees down and out the scale exhaust location. However I need to be able to use something similar to this (link) to mount the pipe to the exhaust port. Not going to pay $80 dollars for one though.... []

Thanks

Hi guys
Mr Grump I made a custom exaust for the saito 57,its on page 16 to give you an idea of what was involved.
Stoat your bird looks real gooood.Love the look of a in theatre long time plane. One thing about our planes is the varying levels of weathering other modelers can take their models too.
ya33a the model comes in a 32Ib

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Thanks guys. Really please with how its coming along now that I have seen it in the air. Boggles my mind at how much more I have to do yet though. Will be a while as I have a Spitfire to finish off that needs to be done sharpish.
One day I would like to bolt in a radial complete with scale exhaust. Heard a Moki live a few years ago and fell so in love with the sound. Promised myself I would own one at some stage. Wonder if the 150 will fit in... Dont want to take a step down in power.....

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Thanks Nudger.
32 lb, (14.5kg) would a Saito 325 R 5 be enough (53cc)? I have one in my Sukhoi 29 at the moment, at 7.5kg, at 16.5lb, but has ample power left over.
Just need to keep saving up to get the F4U.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Sorry for buttin in, but the 450 is a lot more powerful than the 5 cylinder Saito. The Saito radials have to be engineered into the air frame. My 450 did not fit from flush of the firewall to the front of the cowl. Had to remove the mount, make a plate, and insert the carb inside the fuselage. Front to back spacing was a problem. I don't know if the 325 from mount to prop drive plate is similiar, but you might want to consider the new 7 cylinder Evolution 75cc. It will fit like a glove, but if the 450 fit, so would it and the front to back spacing isn't near as long as the Saito's.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Don't bother with the 325. It will be a waste of money in this plane. Flown one in an la7 80 inch and it was only just enough in that. With a radial you will need at least 70 cc.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
A good friend flies nothing but Saito Radials, both the 325 and the 450's. The 325 is fine for a plaine weighing 20-22 lbs. Any thing more and it may fly but its marginal on performance. The 450 is much more powerful and is currently in a 32lb Wildcat. It flies ok. If the plane was 5lbs lighter it would fly fantastic.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Sorry, wasnt meaning to sound negative - reply sent from my phone so very abreviated. The 325 would probably fly the Corsair but it will need to be kept very light. No gear doors, cockpit etc and all internals kept to an absolute minimum. You may be able to keep it down to 25 lbs like this but it will be hard work. I would seriously look at leaving it in the Sukhoi and grab the DLE 60 twin off Hobbyking if you are on a budget (arent we all...?) The 450 or Evo 7-70 would be my preference. Better still something like a Moki radial. Cant beat the gasser for ease of use/cheap to run/no mess etc. They do cost moon beams tho....
Ah, if only it was simple.....

Hey Stoat, Nudger, Kwik, and anybody else that wants to chime in..........
what servos are you using on the flaps? I was using the Hitec HS5645 MG's but there not strong enough to hold the flaps in full deflected position. I'm gonna go with a couple of JR's 8711's that I already have in stock. At 400 inch oz 's of torque, that ought's do it......
YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE........I redesigned the flaps to use only one servo for all three flaps and the wng tips are glued on........
Stoat...........great pics man. I've got two flights now and I'm NOT enjoying this airplane yet........

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Ron, I used hyperion DS20-UMD's but have 4 (2 per side) so lots and lots of torques! I had your problem with my T28 so the trim would change with flap as the speed reduced. Horrible! The JR's you have should do the trick. Just make sure your linkages are not getting to the point where they go over center and cant hold the force of the flap.
It always takes a few flights to teach a bird to fly, so stay with it. You will get there!

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
YA33a,
I originally bought a CRRC Pro twin 55cc for my Corsair and it WILL fit in the cowl without having to cut hole for the spark plugs. The Evolution 77cc Radial came out before I started the build so I had to bench the 55twin and go with the Radial. The 60cc twin will need holes cut in the cowl for the plugs. You might want to investigate the performance difference between the 2 engines if you go the twin way.
$360.00
crrc pro 55
● Type: Two-stroke piston valve petrol aircraft engine
● Displacement: 55cc (27.2ccx2)

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Sorry for going off topic a bit but here is the installation in the SU26,
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_31...m.htm#10806773
I still have a heap of work to do to get it flying, but static test running showed it had around 7 to 8 kg of thrust, I'm also looking at running it on gas, I saw a Rexcel conversion of an ASP/Magnum FS 400 AR, done with 5 ignition systems running off a LiPo, 5 pickups at 28o BTDC timed off #1, looked like a good place to start, but 5 ignition modules (800g / 28oz) plus batteries had me worried about being too heavy, I'm trying to work out how to use the new Saito triple or the twin unit on the engine to save some weight, but haven't quite cracked it yet. I know the new Saito igniter on the tripple uses 4 magnets, 3 Positive and 1 negative on the prop hub to 'reset' the timing as they pass the sensor so they don't fire on the inlet stroke.
Just something else to keep me going, I like the idea of putting my 100T on Gas using the ignition from the FG57 as the driver, (having a 'wasted' spark looks like the best solution and 2 magnets set 180o apart on the prop driver / pick up should work, timed at 28o BTDC. (The 100T is a boxer design using a single throw crank so the pistons go, Putter, putter, putter, putter instead of firing at the same time on a twin throw like in the FG57 which goes, bank, blank, bang, blank..)
At least it gives me something else to think about in bed at night instead of the mortgage.....lol...

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
I guess I'll share my pain so far with this. Ordered the plane 10 days ago. Vq was on vacation and communicated that to me. They shipped the plane when they returned from vacation as promised. I took the day off to sign for the plane and Fedex never shows. I get an email from Fedex showing the plane was delivered and signed for at 4:30 today. I live in a cul de sac and they never pulled into it. The name on the tracking is not even close to my name. VQ had the correct address on the box. Fedex is investigating.
