looks great!!!!!!
i got to get out and maiden mine b4 its to late. Joe |
well during the final checks i came up with a out of balance spinner cone. i was afraid of that because it did not set right on my balancer (i used the dubro, also have the hibbico), so i figured i should try it with just the back plate balanced. she's not gonna let me get away easy.i will look at that in more depth tonight, can't remember if the problem was to heavy for ballencer or out of round spinner cone.

Not sure if it's been asked in here before, but where would one get a prop shaft extension from - or are they pretty easy to make?
And if so, do you need to run a bearing or something up the front to help keep any vibrations/wobble to a minimum? I'm putting a Saito 180 into my CMP BF09, but I'd like to mount it a bit further back so that I don't have to carve a big hole in the cowl... BJ:) |
Is this thread still alive....?
BJ:) |
I have a new one in box , so I am going to build soon and keep it alive :)
|
Mine is still in the box also LDM. I'd never have figured you for an ME-109, the retracts don't rotate.:p
|
Mine is together and flying, still considering upgrade on engine. Has a DLE 20 which is only ok. It could use a little more power. 22 flights on the plane. Limiting factor on flights is weather. This is not a good cross wind airplane.
|
Handy you know me well my friend lol .
I think the 109 was not only one of limited WW2 non rotating gear planes but also one of three of my first Axis planes :) . However I must give credance to my next project an 82" Brian Taylor corsair made from cut blue foam and the base |
I have one of these still new in box also. Savin it for a rainy day type situation.
|
It's raining... :p

finally got the spinner cone ballenced! it took a 4 in long m5 screw and two m5 nuts but it runs all the way to ft without a felt or herd vibration. so last thing to do is ballence, cg at 108mm/4.25in, and lateral and its ready for next flying season. now back to the black horse macchi 200.
Joe |
Anybody need one of these, I have one available. Includes Sierra retracts, Ty's spinner. PM me for info. Also have an OS 1.60 that is perfect for the airframe...
|
I decided to install a Bowman Ring in the DLE 20 instead of going with a bigger engine. Needed beam mount and 26cc seemed not enough difference and 35cc NGH too heavy and more power than needed. I will see if the Bowman Ring really does make as much difference as some people claim.
|
For those browsing this thread, could you explain what a Bowman Ring does?
Mike |
Mike,
Frank Bowman makes replacement rings using softer metal than the original rings, thereby they break-in faster and seat better in the cylinder producing slightly better wot rpm and lower idle due to higher compression I think he also does a reed mod to chinese rear carb gassers, to eliminate the mid-rpm "farting" thats very typical on DLEs and cannot be tuned away I use a few of his rings on my Mokis, they are very good indeed You may search the Gas Engines section either here on RCU or Flying Giants for more info |
I have MVVS as my petrol engines and they don't need any modifications, already reed induction and possibly the most powerful for the size of displacement in the larger sizes.
Mike |
+1 on MVVS
and Moki's (that would be Mackay's for you in the UK) |
Mmmmm..... "Moh-keys"...
I like :D BJ:) |
Ok, I have a question. I "acquired" a new NGH 35 Rear Exhaust engine in a trade. Now, do I keep the DLE 20 with the Bowman ring or take out the DLE and install the NGH? Took off the lower cowl. It looks like the NGH will fit without too much trouble as it is beam mount. It is suppose to have a lot more power. Rated at I think 4.2 hp while the DLE 20 is rated at 2.5 hp. If one believe the specs. My concern is the weight. DLE total weight of approx 29 oz. HGN is 49 oz. This is about 1.25 lbs more. Not worried about cg. I can move the batteries as far back as necessary and not add weight. Total weight will be over 15.25 lbs. Is this going to make a lot of difference in flight characteristics. It flies ok at 14 lbs. Those that have flown this plane with larger heavier engines and higher total weight, what do you think?
|
RBean,
double-check that you can move batteries and stuff and not change the CG. If you end up with a nose-heavy plane you will have trouble with nose-overs. I switched from a DLE-20 to an MVVS 26cc, the plane gained 600 grams. The extra weight is not noticable in the air (the extra speed is!), but it needs some up-elevator on take off roll the moment when the nose lifts to avoid a nose-over. Of course I neutralise the elevator after that to let it pick up enough speed before rotation. |
I put a DLE 35ra in mine, after running an RCG 26. Had to add a firewall (no beam mounting for these!). Adding a little over1 LB to your bird is pretty insignificant overall. She still lands as well as my first one did with a Saito 150fs. The performance is what will really grab you! She's WAY more fun with the bigger engine, as fast (or faster) as any warbird I've had. I'd recommend the 35 in a heartbeat. It'll give you more of what you want without sacrificing handling, on the ground or in the air! Mine balanced without adding any lead to the tail. Remember, you can always throttle back...but you're not gonna want to!!
|
It looks like 2 - 0 for the big engine. So that what I'll do. No rush as it seems like spring is a long way away.
|
Ok, you guys talked me into it. I've spent the last three days installing the NGH 35 Rear Exhaust engine in the 109. Total weight of the plane increased from 14.2 lbs to 15.5 lbs. I had to cut out a hatch and build battery compartment in the lower fuselage. CG is 114mm, just where I had it before. Next is to test run the engine. Don't know when it will be warm enough. Here are photos showing the cowl with the DLE 20 and with the MGH 35. I'm going to try to use an 18-8 three blade RCFG prop because I have it.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2070782http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2070783http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2070784http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2070785http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2070786

Hmmm... the attachments don't seem to be working at my end...
