they will work on the volcano, you just need 2.2 tires to go with them, a monster truck tire, something with a decent sized side wall to get close to the same height as the stock rims.

RE: Redcat Racing Volcano Thread

On the 2.2 tires I ordered me a set of 4 of Pro-Line Moab 2.2 Tire Fr/R Dec 30th off of ebay, the tires are coming from Concord, New Hampshire, and I live in Tennessee, 8 Days later after a few emails to them, I get an email from ebay saying they just now sent them off and gave me a tracking number, and can you believe that the people who I ordered them from sent me a email on Jan 6, saying You will receive your order within the next 2-3 days. Again we are very sorry for this delay and would like to thank you for your purchase, It has been a pleasure serving you.
It is our hope that you will still be willing to leave us positive feedback as we will do the same for you.

Thank You for time and understanding,

So...
As long as I retain the same Tire Height as stock ( aprox. 5 inches ) , It doesnt really matter what size rim I use. The overall Gear Ratio will stay the same, right?
Just for the record, the stock rim size is 3 inches?
And..... Thanks for the help!
Rich...AKA Redharris
P.S. Im askin this question cuz I was with Kuppler yesterday when he broke that Rim Clean Off on that little jump that we video taped. And today I cracked a rim doin the same thing. Sigh ...gotta stop doin that stuff on asphalt....lol.

Yah.... I hear you! Some of those E-bay sellers are real Yahoos! I try to stick with the Sellers HERE in the forum.
Ive dealt with Tri County. They are very cool. My buddy Kuppler got some stuff From Cleremont. Fast shipping!
And for that "off the wall " stuff, I like Tower Hobbies. They shipped my Radio to me from Chicago to Los Angeles in 3 Days ( standard UPS) !
A bargain aint a Bargain if you dont get your stuff in a timely and professional manner. Imho.

correct... Overall tire height is what matters

Thanx Flyin.....Thats what I figgured. Im wondering though, How sensitive IS the Gear ratio to change. How Big or Small can the Tire Height get before We REALLY begin to notice a change in Performance? And we should be able to Compensate for different Tire Heights (within reason) by changing the clutch bell (# of teeth) assembly. Am I right?
Reason Im asking. I was thinkin of fitting my Volcano SV with some Truggy Tires. Problem is that they are either Bigger or Smaller than Stock SV set up.

RE: Redcat Racing Volcano Thread

On Firday, I recieved my Volcono EPX (brushless). On 7.2V, it is pretty good - very fast and agile.

However, on 9.6V, there is a massive difference.

Accelaration is incredible, with the tires spinning on any surface (Concrete, mud or grass). Top speed if really high - mayby 45+mph - much faster than my nitro car.

Braking is also amazing - if you are going full speed and you apply the brakes (through the ESC, not 'normal' brakes), the car will slam to a halt and flip over several times. It is amazingly robust - I have hit hundreds of things, and only bent shocks (I then unbend them with a vice).

One thing I learnt is that on wet grass, if you are going full speed and try to turn sharply, it doesn't turn - it just keeps on coming towards you (not good for the car when there is a table next to you).

On 9.6V, the ESC gets absolutly boiling, so I found a small computer fan and rigged it up blowing air onto the ESC.

My only problem with it is the connectors connecting the ESC to the motor. They are 3.5mm gold bullet connectors. They feel really secure, but in effect, they very easily have a poor connection. If you do a hard jump, then the connectors get knocked, although they look as though they are still connected, one may not be conductive, so the motor wont work. I can't change the connectors, or it will void my warrenty. Grr.

I have no idea how many amps it draws when driving - at 9.6V full throttle, the tires balloon massivly and 20+amps is drawn WITH NO LOAD! (Tires off the ground).

I saw that fan in the manual - I can't find anyone in the UK who sells it, and my fan seems just as good (although it is slightly larger.

i was driving my truck and the pull starter flew off...i went to the hobbyshop and they didnt have any that fit. i have never taken one apart but apparently there are two parts on the shaft, the pull starter itself and a one way bearing...can anyone confirm? where can i get it cheaper than 20 bucks?

i couldnt find a part number for the one way bearing in the manual either

hpi nitro star .15 pull starts will fit. Why not keep the one way that comes with it? same with the one way, an hpi one will fit too.

because i couldnt find the one way anywhere! i lost it in the middle of a field! i found the pull starter but it is shot now. i have an hpi .15 motor but neither the bearing or starter fit on the 18 motor. :/

your welcome bro, glad i could help you out.

pyromaniac6565 01-13-2008 11:25 PM

RE: Redcat Racing Volcano Thread

i thought it would fit but it ended up not...the motor doesnt say nitro star on it, its just a regular hpi 15. :/

RE: Redcat Racing Volcano Thread

it may be the .15 fe, usually they had a purple head on them, the nitrostar.15 had a grey head and black block.

pyromaniac6565 01-14-2008 12:45 AM

RE: Redcat Racing Volcano Thread

yes it is purple...ill take the info about the nitro star with me when i head down there...if it will work 100%

RE: Redcat Racing Volcano Thread

I took my brushless volcano to some 'offroad' areas yesterday.

It is incredibly powerful - it has no problem running steeply uphill through thick mud.

However, I found that whole car got completly covered in mud, especially the back (due to mud thrown up from the from wheels), and I needed to disasemble it before washing every part. It's clean now. Mayby I need to make mudguards?

During the run, it managed to break the ariel off where it exits the tube. In my boats, I used to attach a 50cm whip ariel to the end of the ariel - can I just attach this whip ariel to the slightly shortened ariel? About 15cm was broken off.

During the rebuild, I also changed the servo from the included 2kg/cm cheap servo to a 12kg/cm ball bearing servo. I also tightened the servo saver, because it wasn't turning at full speed.

I am going to replace the current 60mm fan on the ESC (which is 45mm square) with a 40mm fan, plus a fan guard. The car had a few problems when a leaf was sucked into the fan. I am also going to buy a box to put the reciever it - should I get one for the ESC as well? It would have to have a hole in the top for the fan to go in. The ESC doesn't even get warm with a fan. If it don't have a box with fan in the lid, how shall I mount the fan? I have no idea how the redcat cooling fabn is mounted - it just comes with four bolts.

My next project is intellegent lights - I have designed a PCB and ordered the LEDs for it:
If you brake, brake lights come on.
If you reverse, reversing lights come on.
If you stop for more than 15 seconds, the headlights dim.
If you turn, the indicators will flash.

The headlights will be 100,000mcd 10mm white LEDs!
All the other LEDs will be 12,000mcd LEDs.

My next challenge is mounting them in the body.

This car is amazing on rough ground - every 10 seconds or so, it will jump into the air. Battery life on the 9.6V 3000mah packs are ages - after about 10 mins, performance has been noticably reduced, so it is time to put in a new pack.

wow the car, or wow the lights?

Anyway - I found how to mount the fan - the heatsink of the ESC has ridges in it - the fan will screw into that.

The fan is a 40mm brushless fan, with blue LEDs. Much cooler than the redcat one.

We have pictures!

Sorry - they are rubbish ones taken with a phone.

I found the poor connection with the 3.5mm bullet connector was due to the fact that the solder between the plug and wire was a dry joint (due to the plug not being heated enough.)

The mainly black photo is entitled 'driving in the dark (with the new blue LED fan).

The very muddy car has been cleaned - those pictures were taken when I had gotten back from the offroad testing [8D]
