I dont understand why you need a iphone/ipod to get this to reach it full potential. If its all about fine tunning i bet if i put my spektrum system in it it would do the same thing. it just sucks...

yes that would work fine. its just basic rx/tx and servo. but might i recomend getting a better rx/tx, there is a traxxas 2.4gh combo on the classifieds for i think $45.
